Yaxell Mon and Zen Knife Block Sets up to 59% off - from $185 Delivered or in Store @ Kitchen Warehouse

WELCOME15-MT8Z9

Hello fellow Yaxell Moniacs!

For all of you who participated in this popular deal www.ozbargain.com.au/node/569582 a few weeks back, Kitchen Warehouse are now running some clearance sales on their Mon and Zen Knife Block sets. For the uninitiated, the previous link provides a bit of background about Yaxell, but the sharper knife lovers amongst you will already know that they are an OEM provider who make knives out of Seki Japan which are reputed for their Shun-esque Rockwell 61-63 hardness and quality.

Since so many of you took a slice of the previous deal and now have a 16.5cm Mon Santoku sitting lonely alongside your collection of suddenly-ignored Globals and Victorinox Knives, there's no time like the present to round up some more Yaxell blades to keep it company. And unlike a wife or knife wench who may want to argue about spending so much money in a time of global crisis, these knives actually have a point!

In concert with the free shipping above $100 and a $15 discount via coupon code WELCOME15-MT8Z9, you can now complete a matching set of knives to go with your Mon Santoku by complimenting it with the 4pc Mon set below to round off a great set of two of the most used knives in most kitchens via the Chefs and Paring, alongside a mid-sized Utility and your existing full-sized Santoku.

Again, the previous Yaxell deals both explain the difference between the Mon and the Zen range via www.ozbargain.com.au/node/569582 and www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546333 with thanks to KEB for the latter and for introducing quality Japanese craftsmanship to the site at an affordable price. Essentially they are very similar in practical terms, but the Zen range looks a lot prettier out of the box courtesy of its hammered Damascus layering. Both will last a lifetime and look good enough to eat. But with blades this sharp, please exercise extreme caution if you're one of those who like to lick your knife clean after you're done.

All the moreso if you're a surgeon…

  • Wish had gotten this instead of just the Santoku knife earlier. Would have a spare Santoku knife collecting dust if I bought this.

    • Not if you got the Mon 4pc set which has two spare slots but no Santoku - it would round out your set nicely.

But then life is full of regrets. I wish my aunty had bigger b@#/$, then we could talk football and play with knives together…

    • +1

Would recommend you get the Mon set still if you dont have a chef knife
It would give you good rounded set like UncleRico said.
I do enjoy using the yaxell knives. Good profile, great grind and cutting performance.

  • Has anyone used these before? How do they stack up against other popular knives (for the price)?

    • At a similar price to Globals, they comprise significantly better quality steel and are vastly superior.

In my opinion, anyway. Happy for other recent owners to offer alternate opinions…

      • +2

Can confirm, yaxell Zen at least craps all over the global and then some.

Based on the Zen, yaxell fit and finish superior to tojiro with rounded spines, choils.

Mon might be different though, can check out burrfection video on yaxell range for cutlery and more

I used WELCOME15-MT8Z9 thanks to Honey and got the 4 piece down to 185

    • +1

A cut above, kind sir. I shall update the original post, sharpish. Thanks!

  • If one didn't want to become a Knife Knerd , would they be okay sharpening Zen's with a Minosharp 3 stage?

    • +2

Yep. That's what I use on my Shuns and Yaxells presently and they come up a treat. Nigh on identical sharpening angle for those of us who are too time poor to master the art of whetstoning.

I've got a stage 2 also, which works almost as well, but the 3 stage puts a finish on them that is hard to tell apart from all but a skilled sharpener.

The Zen's Damascus pattern will be impacted as more metal is shaved from the blade to maintain it's edge over time, but this is the case with any sharpening or whetstone usage - the latter of which can also scuff and scratch the blade if you're not proficient at using it.

But then nothing ever looks as desirable as the first time you unwrap it…

      • Would the Yaxel 2 stage be better I wonder? or are these things all pretty similar?

        • +1

          sorry misread the question.
I think they should be quite similar, perhaps take the yaxell over the global if you got the yaxell.

Unconfirmed, but I did think the cutting angle on my yaxell seemed quite a bit steeper than Tojiro or kasumi, which could be also steeper than global.

I will have a look to find out.

Edit: according to some others who emailed yaxell, they said their blades are all 15 degrees, global is between 10 and 15.

Verdict: in theory, both should be fine. Would prefer yaxell sharpener for two reasons:
1)Yaxell only uses Vg10 and SG2 steels, so I think they would pair their ceramics more suitably. Minosharp marketed for global generally only has to deal with much softer crmova 18 @ <60 HRC.
          2) Having too steep an angle might make your vg10 chip way more easily. Careful when using minosharp, could put uneven pressure on the cutting edge

Thanks for sharing. Missed last time party. Finally, joined this one. Buy first and think later. Just a little bit more to share which may help someone. I tried to use LatitudePay checkout. There is another $15 off at Kitchen Warehouse with LatitudePay. Single use only. So it comes down to $170.

    • does Latitudepay affect your credit score?

      • It will check your credit score, but not really sure will it affect credit score or not.

  • 6 piece mons are out of stock,
zen is still VG10, so just get hammered finish for the extra price.

    • I second that, buy the Zen and make peace with the extra money spent.
      They're really nice knives though

      • Struggling, really want the ZEN. i still reckon my previous 389 for shun premier is quite a good deal. Block, paring, santoku , chef and kitchen shear.

        • The Zen is a beautiful piece. Cracking deal if you break down cost of knives.

    • 6 pcs Mon is the best value. Unfortunately it’s gone so quickly. I got the 4pcs mon, received today. Not too bad though, quite happy so far.

  • Nearly pulled the pin on this last night, then saw a previous post from KEB where the Zen 4piece was a bit cheaper, so holding out for that.
Don't really know why, don't really need a knife set, but ill be getting one.

    • Just a warning the price may have gone up/jacked.

  • +2

Has anyone noticed they've jacked up the RRP of the 6 piece ZEN set to $899? RRP used to be $779, and in the previous deal at 40% off it came to $452.40 after $15 off code, which is still cheaper than the "deal" they've posted here at $485 after code. Poor form. Previous deal listed here www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546333

  • Did anyone buy the Mon knife block from the first time I posted? Is the shape of the chefs knife more like a santoku?
If anyone can confirm, please let me know asap

  • +2

+1 for the puns. I am grinning from ear to ear…
Speaking of which, do you want to know how I got these scars…?

    • +1

      "For the uninitiated…"
But we are initiated, aren't we @UncleRico?

      • Damn straight we are, Mon Frere!

To paraphrase another poster, while the rest of them were off partying and chasing girls, we studied the blade…

  • bought the block, it comes with a small santoku and i got the large one from then $79 deal …..just need a bread knife deal to fill the last slot in the block.

think i prefer traditional handles in round or hex though, makes then look less like a woolworths or kmart purchase.

  • For anyone who bought the four piece Mon set, the matching $65 17cm Santoku is available again to round out your set.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/569582

    • I'm new to the kitchen but can someone explain why you would need a 17cm Santoku and a 12.5cm Santoku?

      • You wouldnt really "need" both unless you prefer the cutting profile of the santoku over the chef knife.

The 12cm one us quite small, suitable for people with small hands or who are intimidated by longer knives.

Personally I have small hands and am quite comfortable with 21cm chef knives, but my mom sometimes prefers using shorter knife for small stuff.

  • @UncleRico Thanks for sharing. I already redeemed the LatitudePay on the 4pc deal in this one and I shared the LatitudePay deal on previous comments as well, seems nobody see it. Can you please recommend sharper for Yaxell knives? Thanks.

    • Use a quality whetstone like Naniwa Chosera, Suehiro Cerax, Shapton Glass.
Otherwise try wheel sharpeners from Yaxell or Kasumi etc. as the ceramics they use will be more suited to VG10.

  • How often does this knife block go on sale?

I was looking to get the 4 piece Mon but it's currently sold out.

    • +1

It has gone on sale only twice in the last 6 months. Before that, not sure.

  • Looks like the Mon 4pc Knife Block Set is OOS too now :(

    • +1

If you call them, they may be able to see if certain stores have stock to send out. Got lucky and they had one left, but there may be other stores they can check! Was also able to use the coupon code.

      • +1

I manage to snag a set from a local store after emailing them. Arriving tomorrow.

  • -1

had me wondering what happened to my knife block …… seems they never got my order :-(

rang them up, seems it was still in my cart from weeks ago …they found a store that had one so pushed through the order today.
