To Fix ThinkPad E570 Screen or to Buy Again - Any Tips?

Hey all,

So i bought a Lenevo ThinkPad E570 from a OB deal just over 3.5 years ago. i got the extended 3 year warranty and 6 months after warranty expired the screen has died.

Laptop turns on fine but has black screen. I can sometimes get it to work with a second monitor, but by default the 2nd monitor doesn't automatically show so its impossible for me to to get into BIOS (i have to guess when to login and then press windows+p and try and turn on 2nd display).

When i can get the 2nd display to work if i change to 'duplicate' screen display mode i can see the laptop screen briefly flash with a very dull white glow but then it automatically changes the windows display to '2nd monitor only'

I tried hard but Lenovo support won't play nice in regards to repairing out of warranty and have been quoted $385 to fix ($28

I've got a chunky old Dell Inspiron 17 which i have gone back to using in the meantime, which is 7+ old but still working well.

Questions going around in my head:
1) Anyone come across a similar issue and was there anything that resolved without LED replacement?
2) Assume i nothing to fall back re: ACCC rights?
3) Was hoping i might get a goodwill gesture discount on the replacement (i asked) but no dice
4) The whole scenario has left a sour Lenovo taste in my mouth - so not sure if i would even buy through them again

Thanks for reading… i know this probably comes off as more like a rambling rather than questions but any advice / tips would be appreciated.

Cheers

For now if you're happy with the using the 2nd screen, you could turn on the laptop then close the lid, this would make your main screen go to sleep and your 2nd screen the new default

    • This does not work unfortunately…. its hit and miss getting the 2nd screen to work when turning on the laptop… Plus obviously not really a laptop anymore right lol

    • That's what I was going to suggest. Shame it's so inconsistent. My Lenovo Thinkpad E560 can be turned on, lid shut immediately, and then hdmi outputs to the telly. This is how I use it at the moment. As a TVPC for Foxtel Now.

I do take care of my tech… my iphone 6 is still going strong, my 65" (final production plasma) panasonic is still awesome and my previous Dell laptop is 7 years old and can still handle most you can throw at it. Maybe i have higher expectations than average.

The display is very easy to replace

Also a E575 video here which is the AMD variant of the laptop, but the shell is the same. Video is higher quality.

Once you have removed the LCD panel, look on the back for the part number. Google the part number to find it on Aliexpress and order it in and replace it yourself.

It's important that the part numbers match, if they don't there's no guarantee it will work because the LCD control board is programmed to work with a specific set of LCD panel parameters and if there's a mismatch you won't get any output.

    • Hey Scrim, great idea! Lenovo did actually link through to the part 02DL766 in their quote.

I think this product from AliExpress would do the trick

Decent savings…. assuming i would order the right part. Mind giving the above a once over for me if you happen to see this comment.

      Big thanks

I had a similar issue recently and managed to get it solved. Beginning of this year, actually.

I had a laptop that couldn't hold a charge, meaning if I removed the power supply it would immediately turn off. And this was also soon after my warranty ended.

I started at least a couple threads on forums (one being their own) to complain and started the ACCC route. There's a link somewhere that has a template where you can create an email to send to the company you have a complaint against.

The main point I pushed (which also looks to be the case in your situation, too) is that it's not reasonable for a laptop to lose a primary feature (i.e. portability) through normal usage. I'd agree if it lost say 50% of its battery capacity but to not be able to use it as a laptop after two years is unreasonable.

So for you, you could argue the same thing. In a few years, maybe you get a dead pixel or a few, or the brightness may not be as high, etc, but to lose the display completely, I'd argue is not reasonable.

Let me know if you want any more info, and I'll gladly help.

    • Hey thanks for the tip. Definitely worth a shot. Any chance you can dig up your old email and PM me a copy. Would be forever in your debt :)

    Can try this from ebay:

I have previously purchased a screen from these guys and done the replacement on a e560; not too difficult hardest part was removing the bezels rest was pretty easy. Feel free to message them for compatibility
