88' KLR250 Stalls as Soon as Its Put into Gear

My 1988 KLR250 stalls as soon as I put it into gear regardless whether I have the clutch in or not, I've checked for some sort of stand switch just in case but there's nothing there.

  • Strange choice of forum to ask on, but is the clutch actually working? Can you out it in gear when not running, pull the clutch lever, and push the bike? If not, you likely have stuck clutch plates if the clutch cable is actually operating the clutch.

    • Sorry about that, this was the only forum I could remember.
I thought the same but it also stalls when I have it up on a block

      • Have you tried what I suggested? Takes only a minute, and is the first step in a proper diagnosis.

        • I've given that go as well. Put it into first and can still push it around with the clutch

        • do you know what it might be?

  • Does a klr have a clutch/neutral switch?
Sounds like you need to find a wiring diagram and do some trouble shooting.
Would bring the lols if someone did the old jumper to the kill switch trick.

Have you tried selecting 2nd gear instead of 1st?

    • I've tried looking for some manuals and diagrams but I'm only getting stuff for a 98.

      Also stalls out in second

      • It’s one of the joys of working on vintage vehicles. Try searching for a 1987 diagram, and use image search. It’s likely a diagram for a different vintage will be close enough, you just need to make more notes so you don’t confuse yourself.

  • I don't know much about bikes but don't some of them have a safety feature to prevent you trying to ride with the stand out? Might have a faulty switch.

    • I've tried looking for a switch but there's nothing on it

Clutch switch, neutral switch and kickstand switch issue. One of these switches (most likely clutch switch) has an electrical/mechanical failure. Easiest way to test is to unplug the switch and bridge the wires. If it then works as it should, that switch has failed and needs to be replaced or just bridged out.

Member since 24th, last seen, 24th… This thread is never going to be put to bed… Thats some good search manipulation OzBargain has done though. How do searches of "88 KLR 250 stalls when put in gear" on Google end up here and how the hell was this website on top of their list of pages to search/ask this question?
