Temperature Creep in Shower - Slowly Gets Too Hot

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone else here has had a similar problem.

Basically I adjust the temperature in the shower to a lovely appropriate temperature, and it slowly creeps up in heat until it's too hot and I have to stand out of the way of the stream and re-adjust it.
Takes about 3 or 4 minutes to get to the new temperature.
Have gas hot water storage tank, not instant.

Any idea what it might be before I get reemed bringing a plumber in?

Thanks

When you turn on shower, hot water travels through cold pipes, cooling the water. As time goes on, pipes heat up, so water reaches you at a higher temperature than earlier in the showering experience.

    • Shit, doesn't sound like there is a fix for that then. Thanks.

      • Temperature controlled shower taps are a thing, but they're very expensive to buy and install.

Insulation for pipes. It's a thing.

Alternatively, you can do it cheap using pool noodles

        • not always work if the hot pipe going under the house and fixed onto house structure using clamp, in such case clearance is very small and the pool noodle won't squeeze in tight enough. Better get the proper black insulating pipe from bunnings.

        • Insulation is a good idea but it won’t remove this transient issue, just speed up the heating to the stable temperature as less heat will be lost in transmission.

Also the washer in the tap also heats up and depending on what it's made of it may become more flexible and allow more hot water through to the shower head.

      • sounds good

      • So potentially replacing the shower tap washer to something less expandy could be a solution?

        • Possibly, and worth a shot given they're so cheap - but if it's the whole tap mechanism heating and flexing you've got no promises of a fix

        • Also means in addition to the pipes as oscargamer said.

As I wrote "depending on what it's made of it may…" it will be a partial solution depending on what the washer is made of, but you will not know until you replace it and use if a few times, BUT the pipes will still be an issue.

    • Yep, I agree.

      More notable in colder weather.

Takes about 3 or 4 minutes

Just have a 3 minute shower

    • …or add more cold water to the mix???

Sounds like you got a Rheem hot water system

  • I have fluctuations in my hot water due to the safety device outside that ensures water doesn't get too hot for bathrooms.

That thing is quite annoying, our plumber offered to remove it but we have kids so its a risk.

  • Does anyone have a link where they discuss the most energy efficient mixing of hot and cold water based on the input temperatures for different systems? In NSW you can't have hot water supplied at more than 50 °C but I've always wondered what the best ratio and input temperature would have been in the old systems.

  • Tell the "temperature creep" to get out of the shower
