The Lazy Man Budget Desktop ~ $500

A mate asked me today to help him with a new computer build. I honestly can not be bothered building him one and I'm too far out of the game to know what parts to pick for him either

I was hoping to be able to just point him to a decent deal like this expired Techfast one
Entry Level Gaming PC: i3-10100 RX 570 4GB: $599

He said $300-$400 I told him his dreaming but he could do without external graphics

Any ideas?

I'd recommend the ex lease Dells on eBay. I got my folks one for $100 delivered and it's great, I can imagine for $300 you'd get a banger, then $200 left over for a new 27 inch monitor

    • who was the seller you purchased from? seemed to me looking most are overpriced ATM

      • I purchased via eBay from Work Ventures and can recommend them -

        August 2019 Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF Desktop Intel Core i3 GEN4 3.4GHz 4GB 500GB HDD WIN10 Pro $89.00
        Dec 2019 Dell Optiplex 990 SFF Desktop PC Intel Core i5 2400/3.1GHz, 4GB 120GB SSD WIN10 $109.00

They seem to offer these in batches, nothing on eBay at the moment. They are a charity, maybe they are not doing these at the moment due to Covid. The machines were absolutely spotless inside, well packed and arrived promptly.

        • ok thanks.. I have spoken to him and he wants something that can do some light gaming.

      • Their name was workventures

It won't let me link to their store

You could just ask your mate to browse the build a pc subreddit and say you know nothing about computers.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/

plenty of discussion and examples there.

Some advice for a lazy person: Never ever get involved in the pc building process of family and friends. They will come to expect that you are the 'savvy IT person' to ask questions about if you've so much as touched their computer or helped choose their components

    • Never ever get involved in the pc building process of family and friends

      This x1000

      • Exactly, because you are also signing up for a lifetime of being on call tech support.

        • only if your family member or friend are a-holes but I will work for beer/scotch.

I have done plenty of builds in the past but not for a while. last build was for my nephew about 4 years ago he still uses it (1k budget gaming). and even did the better half olds 5-6 years ago ($500 web browser), all with no issues.

  • ok he wants to do some light gaming.. found this secondhand.. just needs a ssd.. OS is taken care of.

seems like a fair deal in his price range ?

    $400

    Specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium G4560 3.5 GHz Dual-Core LGA 1151 Processor (With stock cooler).

Motherboard: ASRock B250M-HDV LGA 1151 Intel B250 SATA 6Gb/s Micro ATX

    RAM: G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400

GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX 570 Gaming 4GB

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM010 3.5in Hard Drive

    Powersuply: EVGA 500W 80PLUS Certified ATX12V/EPS12V Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR

Case: Thermaltake Versa H17 Window Micro Chassis

    • The CPU is the weakest part of the build and due to being a dual core it will result in some pretty big stutters in modern games…. but it's not bad for $400.

The first thing I'd do is also upgrade to an SSD and consider upgrading to dual channel 16gb memory later, but that does mean your $400 build is now a $600 PC that still has a old dual core and is worse value than a brand new $599 Techfast PC that is using a quad core i3 (with no OS)

RandomGaminginHD did a video with a build that consists of those parts and the benchmark results aren't too bad. completely subjective of course.

      • yep I would push him to get the techfast deal if it was still going.

I've told him to get this one seems fairly well balanced, I'm sure it will do all he needs… if he doesn't (its on gumtree so who knows) I will get off my backside and start researching a new build and once I start down that rabbit Warren I'm sure it will give me the upgrade bug for my own pc.
