iPhone 12 Pro Vs Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. Which One to Buy? Your 2 Cents on This Please

Hi Guys,
Recommendations / Suggestions on which one to buy between :

  1. iPhone 12 Pro
  2. Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

With my research, I have found the S20 plus to be ahead in terms of Display and Photos esp. night shots and the iPhone to be ahead in Videos, build quality and apple ecosystem.

I am android user and was thinking of iPhone as my next buy but the iPhone 12 release and news about apple shares being hit upon release has put me in 2 minds ( Honestly Apple did not upgrade much from the iPhone 11 except the LiDAR scanner and csmetic changes). Still thinking of joining the apple family.

Your suggestions please

You won't regret getting the iPhone, but you might regret investing the next few years into Android before finally moving over to iPhone.

    • Why would you assume that OP will eventually get an iPhone?

      • Just my two cents. When someone said they are thinking about getting an iPhone, what they really mean is "I want an iPhone". You should just get what you know you really want from the start instead of waiting years from now.

        • +3

OP also said they are thinking of getting a Samsung phone, so by that logic, they also really mean "I want a Samsung", so hence they should get that now too? I don't follow your logic at all.

          • +1

@p1 ama: Presumably they already have an Android. So they aren't so much thinking of getting an Android as they are thinking of sticking with Android.

            • @AustriaBargain: Yes, but my point is that if someone is considering two options and you make one option the "default choice", then why not make the other option the default choice?

I drive a Toyota and I'm considering either another Toyota or a Mazda, by your logic, I should always go with the Mazda? Because all you're saying is that if it's "something different" vs. sticking with something familiar, I should always go with the different thing.

            • @AustriaBargain: Thanks peeps. At this point I am open to both.

I am an android user now but I don't have experience with the latest (3-4 series) Samsung phones esp. post S7. My experience with Samsung phones earlier was not great esp. in terms of battery life and durability but as per recent review of the latest models I am sure they have come a long way.

As I said, I was keen on iPhone as my next buy (Androids are still great but just as a matter of preference) but probably had higher expectations from iPhone 12 esp. vis-a-vis iPhone 11 but seems apple did not offer much as an upgrade.

Given that Samsung S20 Plus and Ultra have great camera and screens was just in 2 minds and what better place to get trusted inputs than OzBargain !

Hence looking for your valuable inputs

I thought about getting the new iphone 12 pro what i really meant is i really like the blue color iphone 12 and thought for a nano second about getting it till i remembered the OS is locked down so tight i'd be loosing features by switching.

You clearly showed you're an apple sheep with your comment, believe it or not there are people out there that are open minded and can weigh the pros and cons of each and make a decision based on the needs and wants which is what OP is trying to do and your comment has provided zero help to them in regards to that.

            @Axelstrife: Baaaa.

          • +1

@Axelstrife: I love how you Android babies get so butthurt and all spew the exact same tired rhetoric as other Android babies, yet Apple users are the sheep lmao

            • @ThithLord: The downvotes clearly show who the butthurt people are.

Ill continue to use whatever best fits my use case instead of being a sheep so thats android for phone and ipad mini for tablet.

              • @Axelstrife: I love it - you can't retort my point of only owning one iPhone before, soooo you peter off. Sure, you're not the sheep. Sure, mate.

        • I fit this bill.
Considering getting an iPhone as I much prefer the user interface, support, lack of app crashes and it's generally just a nicer product IMO, I've gone between iPhones and Androids for the last 10 years but a lot of my current decision comes down to the camera factor.
I'm looking at moving on from my DSLR and going to a newer mirrorless camera so I'm thinking iPhone 12 mini or Samsung S20 FE, or if the camera on the 12 pro max is good I'll get that or the S20 ultra instead of the mirrorless unless there's a better option on the market?

The big benefit I used to see is that Android is more open in terms of being able to do more with them (i.e. root etc) but I don't care much for that sort of thing anymore

I completely agree with AustriaBargain - Only thing is expensive with apple - will last a lifetime if u look after it
My mac is 7 years old and still running strong - the best investment

My mac is 7 years old and still running strong - the best investment

I have a Lenovo T420 that is also 7 years old and still running strong…

Only thing is expensive with apple - will last a lifetime if u look after it

This is the biggest logical fallacy. It doesn't last long because it's Apple, it lasts long because it is expensive. This is why people think Apple fans are sheep. I don't love or hate Apple, but for a Mac, they use the same chips as Windows notebooks, are produced in largely similar factories from basically the same components. Consumer electronics is one of the most standardised industries. There's no "magic sauce" that Apple has that magically makes their stuff last longer.

Of course if you compare "expensive Apple stuff" to "cheap non-Apple stuff", and walk away saying yeah, Apple stuff lasts longer and is more expensive. That's pretty obvious isn't it?

        • I would say that there are other benefits to Apple that doesn't come or might be 'harder' for PC computers to get with. I think that customer service and technical support is definitely better with Apple, as you know that when something wrong happens, you can take it to an Apple Store or Authorised Repair Centre which you can trust will help you with your issues. Not saying that every computer repair shop out there is dodgy, but like I think people like it when they know they can just walk into an Apple Store, knowing that the people that made their laptops are the ones that are fixing it. Furthermore, I think the software is an additional plus, where on average, Windows only provides 5 years of software upgrades (https://www.pcmag.com/news/how-long-will-microsoft-support-w…) compared with Apple who provides on average 10 years (https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-signs-time-replace-mac/).

I've used both Windows and Mac all my life, but would definitely prefer Mac whenever possible fyi. I also think next month when Apple releases their macs with their own 'in house' developed Silicon chips, a major advantage will be placed over Windows based computers.

But at the end of the day, each to their own. I feel like the argument really shouldn't be "Apple vs Windows", but more, if a person finds a certain company easier to use than the other, and the technology works, then it shouldn't really be a debate.

That's my two cents i guess

All of the features you've listed are either identical between the two phones or next to useless.

The cameras between the two phones are largely identical unless you're pixel peeping, but if you are then use a real camera instead for better quality. The display is similar enough now that Apple uses OLED. In regards to video, how often do you even shoot video on your phone? LIDAR scanner is next to useless and I can say with some certainty you'll never use it.

Basically what it comes down to is whether you want to use Apple or Android. I won't make the case for each (as you can easily do that research yourself, but over time the two OS's have diverged and depending on how much you use your phone, it's quite a lot of effort to relearn another OS.

If you just use your phone to browse social media, look at webpages here and there, use Spotify and take pictures. Then yes, it doesn't matter. However, if you use your phone for work and you have complex integration set up, and you customise your alarms, notification preferences, various preferred applications…etc. all to the tee, then moving ecosystems will be very costly in terms of time.

For the record, I'm an Android user. I don't pretend to say which is better because both are highly mature, stable, and fully functioning OSes, but I've just been using Android for over 10 years now and I've learned how things work with Android. I have everything set up to my exact liking including apps and keyboard and integration and it's just much easier to move to a new Android phone because I can transfer everything across. Have a think about whether you'll be the same.

FWIW, there are two areas where I think Android is far superior. 1) is that it's free to develop apps on Android. If you want to learn how to make apps, it's pretty easy to get started on Android and it's good fun and a good skill to have if you already know how to program, doubly so if you know Java. You have to pay a subscription with Apple. Root access is also available with Android which allows you to modify certain system behaviours. In terms of customisability of the actual system, there's just no comparison.

    • Thanks a ton for your inputs

    • I might also say, Apple's new programming language 'Swift' is Open Sourced and free to develop and use (using their xcode application). Only costs come when you want to put the app on the app store.

      • Did you add on the cost of a Mac?

  • I won an iPhone 11 pro max and galaxy s20 ultra this year (That makes 3 in total with my Oneplus 7 Pro) and sold off the Samsung right away even though I've been on 2 Samsungs since 2014 to 2019. Reason was they get pretty slow after a year and s7 edge had a display issue with a couple pixels wide of bright pink lines vertically down the screen. Can't say iPhone slows down yet but certainly haven't heard of major issues like that on iPhone. I put the speed issue down to the exynos processor so the fan edition with snapdragon might be better with longevity.

    • you won 2 phones in a year? Insane luck

      • Yes within 3 months crazily.

        • WOW. Was the Samsung one from their microcode promotion?

          • +1

@skido: Yep, one of the first ones to get it. Was on a TV ad. IPhone was from university by trialling an app and competing for points.

            • @Applause: WOW congrats. That Samsung promo was a sh1tstorm once it was fully online. I learned that some people had bots set up which auto retrieves the Instagram stories/posts and searches the photo for the microcode and auto fills and uploads the form all within a second, so I gave up 😔

              • @skido: Props to their marketing team. I liked it (probably biased) but something like that should've been seen from a mile away. Should have been more physical instead.

  • I own the S20 Plus and while it's a great phone and i am very happy with it and for the cheap price i paid, i wouldn't recommend it purely based on the lacking battery life vs the snapdragon variant i still get through the day easily no troubles there. but the battery life is quite poor especially when you compare to the snapdragon variant which isn't available to us.

I'd probably look at the Oneplus 8t tbh over the S20 plus unless you can get the s20 for an insane price.

  • news about apple shares being hit upon release

That's because Chinese platforms pulled out from streaming iPhone 12 launch last minute. So many Chinese users couldn't watch it, so shares dropped lol

Apple's stock price took a dive when it was learned that Chinese viewers would be unable to watch the event.

  • I moved to S20+ from an iPhone 8 and I'm very impressed.
    Here is my thought:
120hz display makes the phone much much smoother.
USB C & ultra fast charging is a plus since I hate Apple's cable.
The screen is beautiful and no notch.
Camera auto-focus is alright but it's quite slow comparing to iPhone.

Btw, I had once faced a scenario where the phone had gotten really really hot when charging; to the point that it turned itself off. I was using wifi hotspot and was downloading some files at the time. It hasn't happened again since but I'm still a bit concerned about the incident.

Anyway, I'd recommend the Samsung just for daily use. I haven't used Snapdragon version but I don't see much problem with Exynos. However, if you are into video editing then iPhone is better as they offer iMovie.

For me, once iPhone has 120hz display, no notch and USB-C then I may consider moving back to Apple.

  • You would also need to pay extra for a charger and a cable.. Don't forget that Apple is now environment friendly..

  • At the end of the day you have to look at what you want out of the phone. If your coming from Android you will just have to get use to the Apple interface and the way it operates. Phones at that price should be good. Others will also say alot more cheaper options with similar features. Get yourself to a store and check them out.

What do Apple shares have to do with you wanting a phone?

    • Nothing much, My thinking was the fall was due to apple not meeting feature upgrade expectations. Just wanted to know if others thought so but someone in the comments have corrected this perception.

      • Who cares about what other peoples perceptions are though? If it suits what you want, who cares if it doesn't match up to others expectations.

  • Iphone is much better and superior to Samsung especially App Store

    • What apps do you use regularly on iPhone that's not available on Android?

      • What about when google photos supports full resolution unlimited heic photos on iPhones

        • Plenty of apps on Android let you capture photos in RAW which has even more data than compressed HEIC, so I don't really see this as much of an advantage. You're really having to dig deep for someone who claimed so boldly that the App Store on Apple is better…

          • +2

@p1 ama: You failed to comprehend what I just wrote. So I’ll keep it really simple for you.

Apple apps are only required to support a limited range of devices leading to better tested apps, superior performance, and user experience.

  • Thanks everyone

    • What did you choose and why?
