The Whopper Is The Most Overrated, Boring Burger

Let's talk about Hungry Jack's Whopper for a second.
Originally I titled it "The Whopper Is a Burger Which Does Nothing Wrong, but Nothing Right Either" but felt that was too wordy lol

It's been their signature burger they take such pride in for a long time. However, it's nothing special. It's just a glorified cheeseburger.

This will probably come off extremely pretentious but while eating a Whopper I feel myself getting quickly bored with it. It doesn't taste much like anything or whatever taste it originally has gets dulled quite quickly.

I haven't tried the Big Jack and one part of me really wants to because I feel they might outdo Maccas there. Although the burgers have definitely slipped in quality from Hungry Jack's - don't know whether it's just the few stores I've visited but meat tastes old, bland and hardly warmed. Buns taste one day off going stale. Sauce is normally the saving grace, although sometimes there's not even much taste of that.

If the Big Jack doesn't live up to the hype either, what burgers have Hungry Jack's got left really to compete?

Part 2:

I actually really enjoyed the BBQ Pineapple Whopper from Hungry Jack's previously. Maybe that's why I had high expectations for the standard Whopper. Doesn't look like I can add pineapple though so that's a shame.

Also a double whopper with bacon and cheese just for the burger is over $10? That's without things added like beetroot or angry onions.
I don't know if the Ozbargainer in me will allow me to spend $10 on just a fast food burger.

I see on the coupons 2 Whoppers for $9.45 but not sure who'd eat the second one and idk if you can do add ingredients on vouchers and still get the reduced price

Part 3:

For anyone still following this, I tried a Whopper (with Cheese and Bacon) from a different store. Was a lot better but I don't think that was the issue. I could actually see the meat was flame grilled and it tasted like that too compared to those previous which were tasteless.
Note I never compared the Whopper to the Big Mac, I was wondering the quality of the Big Jack to the Big Mac. Somehow I feel a simple cheeseburger gets the job done nicely at Maccas rather than Hungry Jack's but the problem with Maccas is the size. At least the Whopper is more decently sized.

Would I buy one again? Yes, but only if I spun a $4 Whopper on shake and win and didn't go to the first store I tried.

For me, it's the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich. I even ask for extra McChicken sauce packets and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for McChicken sauce packets and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly McDonald's worker laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and ALWAYS give me three packets. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local McDonald's restaurant, I go there at least 3 times a week for lunch and a large iced coffee with milk instead of cream, 1-2 times for breakfast on the weekend, and maybe once for dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs.

I even dip my fries in McChicken sauce, it's delicious! What a great restaurant.

    • which store? gonna add it to me bucketlist

"hey you know I'm three for free's friend?!"

      • I think he's talking about McDonald's.

Compared to other burger chains, HJ/BK isn't the greatest, but I've completely gone off McD.
If I just want a quick and easy burger meal, HJ it is now. Also, since they changed their chips, I much prefer them over the over-salted fries McD serves.
So yeah, HJ/BK wins over McD for me now.

You can get 2 whoppers for $9.45
Then remove the top bun from one of the whoppers. Put the 2 whoppers together to make your very own Mega Mega Whopper.

    • or eat that extra bun on the side..

The top bun is called the crown btw. I learned this using insider information, by posing as a low level burger maker for years. They didn't see it coming.

  • I got disappointed with burger king/hungry jack's after they got rid of the fish burger.
Mind you, it is better than maccas.

Have you tried the all-in burger from nandos? I do enjoy that.

  • Mmmm Bacon Deluxe.
I dont like how the bacon at HJ is almost as thin as paper though. Also when I asked for one that looked more like the picture I had to pay extra for heavy lettuce and tomato.

Just add bacon. Makes everything good

  • All these suggestions are amateur hour. If you want to make your whopper taste great, add piri piri sauce and add jalapeños. That’s it. It turns it into the food of gods.

  • @pennypincher98, your real name wouldn't happen to be Mr Ronald McDonald would it?

    • Not sure why Ronald himself would shit on his own brand but okay.
Unless it's just to get a cheeseburger (preferably $1 offer) there's no draw card to McDonald's except the fact there's 2 in walking distance versus no Hungry Jack's easily accessible.

I still miss the old fashion corner store hamburgers made fresh while you wait…

like they made back in the 80s' fawkin things were huge.. and one with the lot really did have the lot all cooked in front of you fresh.

    • Yep, good old greasy Jo's burgers with the works, fried onions, egg, beetroot, you name it…. even pineapple! I suppose they can still be found here and there.

      • Must have pineapple!! and bacon… and eggs, and tomato, and cheeze, and onions… lettuce… insert homer drool

drool… Im headin to the shops to get shit to make my own burgers for dinner …

  • Anyone tried Carls burgers ?? I saw the store at Cranbourne and then looked at the prices and kept going

    • Carl's Jr? Yeah they are great in America. Alright here too but their prices are laughably outrageous in comparison.
Although if money isn't an issue, you could do better by going to an actual burger place (or some fish in chip shops).

      • I want to try Sonic the Hedgehog burger, on American talkshows the consensus from comedians seems to be Sonic is the best.

    • Carl's is just like Hungry Jacks to me. But I'd only go there because they allow free refills of soft drinks.

You must be going to a bad hungry jacks the one near me is yards above mcdonalds

  • Does anyone else reliably get hiccups after eating a McDonald's hamburger?

  • Whoppers are pretty good if you are lucky enough to get a hot one. To make it better add BBQ sauce, bacon and a couple of onion rings.

  • When I was 15-16 years old I worked at a hungry jacks and so ended up eating their burgers many, many times a week.

I blame all of my failures and downfalls on that period of my life.

  • HJ's are under rated in general. To the person reading this, I know what your response will be. Just don't do it.

  • All of the main fast food chain burgers are boring. If you want interesting then try specliased burger joints… Like Bar Luca in Sydney. It won't be cheap.

  • I've never heard it rated. I just buy one if I want one.

  • Forget the quality, why do they call it fast food when it’s so damn slow? If I order a Quarter Pounder I want it in 30 seconds like in that Maccas movie. They make to order and they can’t even do that right.

  • The more important question is : where is the Double Swiss Cheese with bacon?
    https://www.sprinklesandsprouts.com/mushroom-swiss-burger/

When travel opens up and you get a chance to visit a Burger King in Asia, get this!

  • It’s only boring when you don’t change it up ! My go to is Whopper with Cheese, minus onion add Angry Onions, Add Beetroot, Add Extra Pickles - winning combination 🙌🙌

  • Somehow I feel a simple cheeseburger gets the job done nicely at Maccas rather than Hungry Jack's but the problem with Maccas is the size

Sure, if you just need a quick snack…

  • Agree. But the Mcdonalds Double Quarter pounder is pure magic. It has to be the double, it completely changes the taste.

    • Still terribly dry patties compared to anywhere that does smashed patties made from decent quality mince.

  • And I've been accused of being an auteur? 🤨 OP just wrote a 3-part ode to the worst burger he's ever eaten. 3 parts! to tell us how bland his $5 burger was. Even my existential crisis didn't warrant 3 parts.

Sorry Op, I gave up after part 1. Did I miss anything?

      Did I miss anything?

Yes, the time stamp. Dude you're literally commenting on something from October last year.
For someone who doesn't care/gave up, you really must've gone to efforts to find this..
