Subnauitca is brilliant, and pretty much finished as far as I can tell, developer moved onto Below Zero

  • The decision to not support VR with their follow up Subnautica Below Zero after Subnautica's VR was so well received despite bugs is turning me off a purchase. I hope they might reverse this decision in the future or someone makes their own mod (not just viewport) with proper motion control support for it.

      Well received? Not for me

Whilst Subnautica is one of my favorite games of recent memory - the VR implementation was really poor. The game is/was very poorly optimised and couldn't even get 60fps stable with the best GPUs at the time of release on a 1440p monitor, let alone 90fps across 2 VR screens. Also the controls saw 0 support for tracked controllers. It's like they just realised their engine was capable of VR so they slapped a VR sticker on it and didn't do any work for it.

Below Zero is showing worse optimisation now than Subnatica did originally. It doesn't look any better but it runs worse. I suggest people save their money and not purchase it as it's a buggy unoptimised mess with no polish.

They have no choice but to ditch VR, they just don't have the team to create the level of optimisations needed for a VR experience to run smoothly and they are very far behind on Below Zero as a whole despite having a large amount of capital invested. They are ~1 year behind on schedule. Time will tell if they polish the turd into something nice, but as is - even if you are a big fan of Subnautica, I suggest to stay away for the time being.

      • Agreed in general. I finished Subnautica on 2D but couldn't even start the Cyclops in VR.

  • As much as I loved Subnautica they're well behind schedule with progress on Below Zero. I'm still holding out.
