Setting up a Mesh Wi-Fi System - Telstra NBN

Hi Everyone,

Looking for some advice on setting up a mesh Wi-Fi System. End goal is to have the seamless Wi-Fi connection through the house using the current modem and new mess setup and have the option of a data point on the back of the mesh device to plug in a device if needed.

We are on the NBN and the current equipment I have is:
Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 - Model # LH1000
NetComm Wireless FTTC Network Connection Device - Model # NDD-0300

Was looking at something like This but unsure how it all works to setup and don't want to be throwing money away if it's not going to work with our equipment..

Any help appreciated

I'm on Telstra NBN and using 3 Deco M5 units which gives me wifi access to 100% of my property (and slightly beyond).

    • Is it easy to setup? Was trying to do it for under $150 and saw the Tenda Nova's were heavily discounted.

I just picked these up on Wednesday, and happy with the end result :)

      • Thanks Spaceback. Did you pick up the Deco M5 or the Tenda Nova?

Any other units that are cost effective around the $150 mark anybody could recommend?

          Deco M5

Needed to upgrade from an older router who's wifi wasn't cutting it for media streaming, and the soon-to-have XB Series X. Did a bunch of research on here and online, and they just seemed the best bang for buck. Figured it's best spending the extra now so I won't be replacing them later.

Got HN to price-match MSY @ $259 for the 3-pack. Certainly not the cheapest it's been, but cheapest I could see this week

    • Does each of the units have two ethernet ports?

Two Gigabit Ethernet ports per unit. One port is used up for WAN by the NBN connection device or VDSL2 modem.

Re setup: Do you have any use for the Telstra phone & 4G fail over?

The Tenda Nova is suitable. The Deco M5 comes with a beefier CPU, faster ports, more RAM to handle more connected devices at one time & has more powerful wifi radios.

    Deco M5
    1000 Mbps WAN & LAN.
    Quad-core processor @ 638MHz & 256MB of RAM.
Dual band AC1300 with 4 antennas on each node.
    VLAN 802.1q support.

    Nova MW3
    100 Mbps WAN & LAN.
    Single-core processor @ 600MHz & 64MB of RAM.
Dual band AC1200 with 2 antennas on each node.
    No VLAN 802.1q support.

    • I have a cordless phone connected to the phone line but not internet. We will run mobile phones, xbox, ipads, computers etc. for a family of 5 so want it to work. Sounds like I need to spend a bit more on a setup.

      • The Deco M5 is a better buy. Take into consideration NBN are upgrading the FTTC network to allow speeds greater than 100Mbps and most don't upgrade routers for a few years. If you went with the Nova MW3 you would have to upgrade to get speeds greater than 100Mbps.

Is the phone hooked up to the Telstra SM G2?

  • End goal is to have the seamless Wi-Fi connection through the house

Do you have black spots in your house? Can you describe your house layout , like is it single floor with a wide area or is it multi storey? Many walls between rooms and your router?

Wifi mesh needs a high capacity back haul to give you good performance. I suggest looking at wifi5 mesh operating in 5GHz channel. The tender Nova mw 3 can operates up to 867Mbps in that frequency so that's good. The 100Mbps ethernet port to your modem might be limiting if you want to go higher than NBN100

I'd say two nodes for multi storey House but 3 or more if single storey with lots of floor area.

  • Thanks everyone, I'll look into the deco M5.

    • Is the phone hooked up to the Telstra SM G2?

There are multiple ways the router can be configured.

      • Phone is cordless and connected via phone line not internet.

Eventually NBN will be switching off the old phone lines.

Hook up the Deco M5 to the NBN network connection device.
