Jeez the price on these has fallen fast from launch
Maybe too similar to V3 and most people not bothering to upgrade

    • +3

They come for free if you bought a Sony Xperia 5 (Mk II) phone.
So tempting, that phone, and this headset. Unfortunately, that promotion was international only.

…hence, even I skipped on it.
I'll wait a year to buy the XM4 (no travel) and hopefully upgrade to great handset (Sony?).

      • I am also looking to buy sony phone but i don't think sony sell phones in Australia now.

        • I had an Xperia XZ1 Compact. Wanted to upgrade to the 5 II but it's $1300 imported. Way too much - I got an S20 FE on that JB deal.

      • Where can i get this sony xperia 5 mk11 offer in aus

        • +1

You can't. Sony pulled out of the Australian market for phones like Panasonic with TVs.

A real shame cause I think the new Xperia phones are quite good.

    • +1

it's the same with XM3 and XM2. Sony allows retailers to discount their products at will. Companies like Bose and Apple don't.

  • what is the "OW" in OW price match?

    • +3

      Officeworks

    • +11

You’ll find other common OzB acronyms here

    • +1

When it comes to office works… its price beat. As in officeworks will beat the lower price by a further 5%

Inb4 the ‘I’ll wait for the price to drop below $300’ comments

  • +23

i'll wait for them to drop below $300

    • So you're willing to wait a year is what you're saying?

      • +9

Then wait for xm5’s to drop below $300, these are the “Days of Our Lives”…

      • +8

        see previous comment lol

      • These headphones, from both Sony and Bose, they get released every 1.5 to 3.0 years.

    • In just after the ‘I’ll wait for the price to drop below $300’ comments

During amazon day, ebay was doing the 1 hour sale + shopback, got mine around $325 … black friday is near maybe it will drop back to the near $300

  • I got the V2, still alive and kicking but with restricted travelling, I dont see any point in upgrading even if you have v1.

    • V2?

      • Version 2 - WH-1000XM2

    • i got the Mark 1s, don't see any point of upgrading yet

  • +1

Will wait til below $300. Can't travel anyway

    • Can still use them while WFH and if you have to catch public transport

  • There are issues with some batches where there are popping sounds coming from earcups.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCD9grHot20

Mine suffered the issue when phone calling and I got it refunded. The mics also tend to overcompensate background noise reduction = tiny volume.
Also the ANC on these is not ideal on buses. Bumpy roads (peaks in the sound) cause the ANC to way overcompensate resulting in the music being cut out unnaturally. But when it does work as intended (train rides, library) it is good.

  • +4

These are so underated, I've had mine for around 3 weeks now. Hands down best head phones ever owned (coming from a airpods owner).

    • +2

They're not underrated if almost every review site was raving about the WH-1000XM3.

    • +1

They are literally known as king of headphones, how are they underrated?

      • -3

        Underated means its good,

        • +1

The definition of underrated is something that has not received the merit, recognition or praise it deserves.

For those buying to work from home, please do some research into connectivity issues with things like Zoom/Teams. My XM4s will drop out during a Teams call, which is extremely frustrating and has to lead me to not use them for work… I've tried a multitude of 'fixes', such as turning off noise-cancelling etc to no avail.

    • +2

Have u tried doing a factory reset? I use mine for work and no issues.

    • Have you tried an external bluetooth adapter?

    • Have you tried it on a different laptop? Does it happen when used with other apps?

    • +3

      Thanks for the comments.

I haven't tried an external adapter, although I shouldn't have to. I use other Bluetooth devices (admittedly not audio), with no issues on the laptop. The issues I'm having replicate the complaints of other people online, so it isn't confined to my own device. I'll try a factory reset, however, it's done it since new, so I'm not expecting a lot. I'll try and update Bluetooth drivers as well, however, as it's a work machine, this may not be possible…

A lot of the issue appears to be related to the switching of Bluetooth devices between headphone/headset mode, where headphone mode is unidirectional (audio only), and headset mode is bi-directional (audio and microphone), this is related to a bandwidth limitation of the Bluetooth standard. It seems Windows is pretty bad at managing this, leading to unreliable connectivity, and may not be just a problem related to the XM4's.

See Reddit thread here of complaints: https://www.reddit.com/r/sony/comments/i8i71m/wh1000xm4_has_…

      Similar issue on Microsoft forum:
      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_…
      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msteams/forum/all/teams-…
      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/blueto…

      • " this is related to a bandwidth limitation of the Bluetooth standard" Somewhat correct, the current standard (HFP HSP codecs). Bluetooth allows for hi-quality stereo bi-directional but its up to one of these greedy companies to actually implement it by writing a new codec instead of using the same re-hashed old one thats been used since Bluetooth 2.0.

I'd wait until the new bluetooth codec LHDC / LLAC becomes mainstream, then you'll snag one of those new headSETS and a USB Donlge (because windows 10 only allows AAC and aptX) eta is 1-2 years

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LHDC_(codec)#LLAC
        https://www.lhdc-audio.org/

P.S. the XM4's are HOT for ANC, which is their main selling point, compares to nothing else in ANC quality, having tried a few.
Hope you fix your issue in some way. :)

        • Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the whole Bluetooth scene is surprisingly frustrating.

I got my work IT to update the Bluetooth driver and it worked! It was literally the last thing I was going to try, as I'd exhausted all other options first. My work computer isn't that old (<1yr old), so wasn't expecting much to happen.

    • Been using my XM'3s with Teams everyday for the past year and they have been working fine. Sucks that you are having that issue with the XM'4s :(

      • +1

What do your colleagues think though? I find my XM3s unusable because the mic is so bad. And I hate it when my colleagues talk on XM3s, it's so muffled.

        • Yeah mixed honestly - I think it does the job BUT I have recently switched to using the laptop's mic ( I have a surface book) and it does the trick. The audio comes out a lot better for my colleagues. So using the XM3's as your speakers but the laptop as the mic is what I do on MS Teams.

Kind of wish they had fixed the mic's in the XM3s, will eventually buy the XM4's since I am on calls most of the day.

          • @chaiwala21: Th mics of XM4 is not good either based on the reviews on youtube.

        • +1

Turn on ambiance mode during calls and the mic will work very well

  • How big an upgrade are these over the second gen?

    • +1

Significant in terms of clarity and noise cancelling from 2nd gen plus USB C a charging, but honestly it’s a very subtle difference between the XM3 and these. The AI EQ thing is not bad at giving the impression that it’s upscaling music, but the XM3 can also achieve this using their EQ settings in the app.

      • Would also include the multi device which is something that Sony and many other brands forgo.

It's so good to have audio pause and be picked up when you decide to go from computer to phone etc

        • Hi @Unorthodox , do you mean XM3 or XM4 or both have multi devices sync capability?

          • @Smaland: Only 4 has it from memory unless 3 has it enabled via software update recently.

Seamless connect being that you can have it connected (not just paired).

  • This or quiet comfort 35?

  • +1

Aren't there ways to get JB gift cards 20% off? Brings this deal down to $320.

  • Bought a pair few weeks ago but exchanged them through seller RMA because there was a tiny raised bump on the touch sensor coating. The replacement had the exact same thing but the bump was in a slightly different spot. Can anyone with a pair (not from mobileciti) confirm whether this is normal?

    • Can anyone with a pair (not from mobileciti) confirm whether this is normal?

How does mobileciti XM4s differ from other sellers?

      • I'm thinking batch issue

  • Harvey Norman have just dropped their price down to $398 for these also for those who want to put them on LatitudePay

  • +1

I'll wait for them to drop below 379.04

  • Anyone waiting for a price drop can set an alert here and this’ll let you know when it reaches that price https://www.mytechsense.com.au/sony-wh-1000xm4-wireless-nois…

  • Sony has “Request a Pricematch” option. We can then maybe use $50 sign up voucher.

    • +1

Care to explain the sign up voucher?

      • I can’t see it on their website now but when I posted that comment it came up as a popup “Spend $350 get $50 off”

  • Harvey Norman just sold the black ones for $370 when I asked them to beat good guys $395

  • Just a heads up, OW have updated their pricing to $398 today. I hadn't noticed this until going in-store earlier tonight. Luckily Mobileciti had them for a difference of $1: $397. So with price matching + 5% price guarantee got it for $377.
