Stepdown Voltage Converter 220V to 110V - at Least 300 Watts

Hey OzBargainers

I was looking to see what is the best deal for a Voltage stepdown converter.

Jaycar seems to be ripping off with a huge markup.

I found something on US Amazon that looks like it does what I want it to do for me.

Works out to be $80 delivered.

Any idea if there's something of better value available?

  • Just confirming the equipment you will be using does NOT care about the 50 v 60 Hz issue?
Just confirming you do NOT care about your insurance as the amazon one is not approved for use in OZ!!!

My google search "240v step down 110v transformer" found cheaper ones in OZ!!! Be aware OZ Bargain's ! favorite seller is in the list. <! is boolean>

Just confirming, are you saying no one should buy that Amazon converter?

    • It's for a kitchen Appliance that we can't get here in Australia. The label on my appliance has these specifications on it.

      AC 110V 60Hz 250W

What exactly about the amazon one makes it not approved to work in Australia? will it simply not work?
How do I find them in the favourites list?

You’ll need to do more research in regards to that appliance and it’s 60hz requirement. Getting a cheap voltage down step means it’s going to be 50hz here.

Generally for AC electric motors they will spin slower and may cause improper resonant frequency causing noise and imbalance.

Generally electronic devices won’t have an issue as they contain internal power supplies

        • After looking on their website it looks like the appliance is compatible for 50Hz and 60Hz, but I might email and ask them specifically what the device needs.

What is it for? You could get away with a portable battery that is capable of 220V and 110V if you only need the device like five minutes out of each day. And then you'd have a handy battery to use for all sorts of things.

    • It's for a kitchen appliance my GF wanted, not available in Australia, so I have to go through this lol…

      • Can you give us the model of the appliance so we can look up the specs?

        • It's the Levo 2 Oil Infuser

    • What? A battery is DC, the appliance is ac.

      • You can get batteries that will power standard mains powered appliances. I operate all kinds of stuff off mine, mostly wired video lights that I wished were wireless. Now they are.

          That's a battery with inverter.

          • @brendanm: Could get DC powered appliances…? Maybe thats what he has?

300W is big, definitely don't get Jaycar's ones. It's very important that you tell us what you'll be using the transformer for.
I used to order custom step down transformers from TorTech in NSW for equipment coming from USA. The equipment permanently runs 24/7 all year round so I can guarantee their reliability.

    • Hey Brokenenglish

Thanks for the links you suggested. I will have a look at them.

The appliance I am using is the Levo 2 Oil Infuser.
I tried to post a link to what it is but the bots delete my comment.

      • Is that a coffee machine but for oil infuser?!
I used TorTech for commercial equipment. If it's for a simple home appliance, I think you can go with this currently on sale Edison 300W @ $29 + shipping instead: https://www.edisons.com.au/300w-genpower-step-down-transform…
I just found this company and I honestly have no idea how it's that cheap LOL
There's a $10 OFF for first order when you subscribe to their newsletter too. Plus 3.50% CashRewards.
Website looks legit but I never used them though so proceed with caution.

        • Not a coffee machine but you could use it for that I guess, it has very precise temperature control.

It's an infuser for all kinds of things like ghee, oil, butter, almond oil with any sort of material like lavenders, chillies, seeds and spices.

Can be used to make lip balms, beard oils, hair oils, natural deodorant.

I will check out the edisons one as well and let you know. Thanks a bunch, Brokenenglish.

        • Any idea how to get the first order coupon? I can't seem to find a way to get that to popup.

          • @tobi: I left the tab open for a couple minutes and the popup appeared. I didn’t subscribe so I wouldn’t know the deliverability.

        • Actually I just found that Dicksmiths actually carries the same units which work out cheaper even with shipping.

          https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/500w-step-down-transform…

so… it's cant be too bad now, could it? lol

          • @tobi: Dick Smith is Kogan.

            • @pjetson: That is true, I do see people buying from there still, so it can't be that bad.

  • The Amazon unit you've listed seems to have terrible reviews.

    • There's a mix of good and bad. I just saw there were a lot more positive ones.

  • Mine is a "Metland" China / USA " Brand , its 2000w, I use it for a large Kitchen Aid mixer.
I bought it on ebay for about $ 80.00 with free delivery, an australian based seller.
Its still going well after 8 years
