Just in time for the new generation of consoles. Samsung T7 2tb (non touch) is at its lowest price ever for an Amazon US deal of the day. 22 hours left at this price at the time of posting.

Please note, PS5 owners will only be able to use this for playing PS4 titles. PS5 games require a drive to be installed internally, and they need to be whitelisted by Sony before they can be.

Edit for additional info:
You can buy the 2tb T5 for $349 currently from Bing Lee, Officeworks, etc.

Both use USB 3.1 Gen 2, which is 10Gbps. Both are also backwards compatible with USB 3.0 (5Gbps).

The SSD inside the T5 is SATA based and the SSD inside the T7 is NVMe based.

SATA tops out at 6Gbps, while NVMe can easily max out the 10Gbps USB connection.

    $400 for 2TB, no f**king way

    • I guess you wouldnt mind waiting a few more seconds when loading games…

      • waiting a few more milliseconds when loading games…

Because it’s a bad price? Or because it’s only 2tb? It’s an SSD, and only $50 more than the slower T5. Local stock is $520 and (more commonly) up.

  • Should be careful associating it with the consoles when PS5 compatibility in particular is not a sure thing so far as I can tell. Sony are yet to release their list of compatible drives.

All will be revealed (or discovered) soon after Nov 12 but until then some guesswork is involved.

Compatibility needs to be verified for internal drives only. Not external. But I will edit the post to point out that you will only be able to play PS4 titles from the external, not PS5.

I wonder why it is ineligible for free Prime shipping.

It is not Prime eligible item

So what's inside? is it worth shucking?

  • Console seems an “interesting” use case for this unit to me.

As someone buying a Series X, if it was me and I had $400ish to drop on a next gen consoles storage, I’d probably pay for the expensive 1TB expansion and then add a cheap 4TB or so external for extra capacity. Might cost a bit more, based on the price of storage for the Xbox at $359, but at least the 1TB would be usable for future titles and the ~$100 for 4 TB mechanical drive will give you capacity to archive games too and can still run previous gen titles.

That or I’d get a larger 10+ TB drive, save some money and live with the knowledge I’ll need to move titles onto the internal storage if they’re next gen ones, or to maximise the performance of previous gen releases.

Seems a lot of money to play previous gen titles to me. Not a bad price for the drive by any means, just not something I’d personally buy to exclusively use on a console where any data can generally be deleted and downloaded again anyway. It also won’t be rated to support instant resume either I believe in the case of the Xbox.

    • Yep, this is overkill for the Series X, it can't make use of the 10Gbps, only PS5 can, so for Series X owners, far better getting something cheaper that maxes at 5Gbps.

      • Even for the PS5 I’d do the same and buy an internal drive that supports PS5 titles before dropping $400 on an SSD that only supports last gen releases. Not exactly sure what that will cost, but taking the storage to 2-3TB for internal seems like the more versatile route for the console.

        • Same, but it all depends on your game library, how frequently you play different games and your internet connection. Slow internet means store it locally, fast means you can just get it again easily. The Sata SSD in my PS4 Pro will become my external for any PS4 only games I may need to keep externally. If I spend anymore on a drive, it will be an internal for PS5 speeds.
There are plenty who have 2-4TB drives right now for current gen, the T7 will alow them to be played at a vastly faster rate, so there is some benefit. As always, it's up to each to do their own cost benefit analysis.

  • Decent alternative to the traditional performance flash drives?

    • When googling about it I saw that some people use them for their dashcams, if that helps.

  • It is updated to be free shipping now for prime now! Ordered 1 for photo storage :)

    • I want to order one too but unsure about warranty given it’s an US import.
