Matt Blatt Furniture - BIG Mistake

Just wanted to share this with everyone hoping that this mistake doesn’t happen to anyone else:

Coming from interstate and moving into a new apartment unit, I have had to purchase new sets of furniture recently. I had done a great deal of looking and factored in free shipping as well as quick despatch hoping to get settled into the new place before I start my new job. I came across different websites and Matt Blatt stood out - their furniture items (image) looked very convincing as well as the price. I was excited knowing that despite my previous attempts at shopping around instore this would have been the easiest way to shop for furniture. And was I clearly wrong. I made a purchase of over $1200 that night.

Soon after, I had thought about looking at reviews and finally found out that Matt Blatt went into administration early this year and had now been bought out by Kogan - I picked this up earlier and thought about how familiar the website interface was but went ahead with the orders anyway. Fast track into a couple of days on delivery, I had a big sigh of relief knowing that the orders went through okay and got delivered after finding out the administration debacle with orders not getting filled after customers spent thousands of dollars.

Anyway, I am very frustrated and disappointed with the quality of furniture as I unpacked the boxes. It was clearly not what I paid for - really poor quality, the couch fabric was tough as sandpaper and I wouldn’t even sit on it- I would have been happier buying a Kmart furniture and not have to spend $594.00 for it!

So I decided to leave some of the boxes unopened and to proceed with returning the items for a full refund. This was where it went tricky and very dodgy. The Matt Blatt website does not exclusively sell the items but they have the marketplace where other third party sellers do — their terms include returns only if they deem so, and minus fees which cost almost half of the item price. To give you guys an idea, the couch which I purchased for $594.00 would cost me :

  • Original dispatch fee $75
  • Return freight fee $75
  • 15% restocking fee $89.25

For the change of mind fees. This is ridiculous. Clearly its a vicious tactic so they can get away with returns and discourages customers to do so. I am
Just really disappointed with this and I would want to make a complaint to Fair Trade because this is a total ripoff.

Have you guys been in a similar situation? I just don’t know what to do, I’m on my own and I feel helpless.

      He did.

      He read the insolvency.

      He read the awful reviews.

      And he went ahead anyway.

Are you sure it's not Ruslan Roulette?

This is the best comment I've ever read. I'm stealing this and using it and you can't stop me.

        • -2

No russian roulette is supposed to be fun like in the movie the deer hunter

The un-fun version requires you to purchase from Kogan

          • +1

@Mosher: maybe it's the version of comparing 6 websites and clicking on Kogan?

        • -1

can someone explain it to me? Ruslan roulette? I don't get it…
There are so many upvotes, that I feel I need to know!

And purchased without seeing the actual product irl.

  • +56

I don't really understand why you think the return fees are unreasonable. It's cost them money to ship it, then pick it up and it will have taken time and effort for someone to pick and pack it, then check it over when it gets back and put it back into their stock.

In the end you do lose a lot of money, but it's because of your fault, not theirs. So why do you think it's unreasonable?

    • +14

I feel like this is a perfectly fine take for typical change of mind returns.

But dirty tactics of buying the name of a some what good furniture company and spinning it to shit quality furniture is pretty slimy.

I dunno i feel like quality isnt really a change of mind rather a mismatch of expectations.

      • +25

Matt Blatt was never a premium bespoke furniture maker. It was always mass produced (often replica) pieces from overseas. Nothing wrong with that, but you have to be realistic in the price range. Kogan didn't magically sully Matt Blatt's spotless reputation. The OP just read about it online and is grasping at straws.

        • +8

MB furniture actually used to be made in Malaysia
The quality was actually pretty decent. Since Kogan stepped in they have switched to China.
The reviews from this year vs say 2 years ago tell a very clear story

Kogan is very much responsible for the change in quality
They had factories producing for them already in china, switched and the change is evident.

          • +6

@jimbobaus: I've bought a couple of items from Matt Blatt, including the same dining room chairs, before and well after Kogan buyout and it's no different. Sure, it's anecdotal, but short of running standardised tests, so is everything else. I've never held their quality in particularly high esteem.

            • +1

@SydStrand: I have some of their danish style upholstered dining chairs and definitely agree. For the look they were much cheaper than actual danish furniture or other reproductions offered around the place but they are suspect in quality.

          • +3

            @jimbobaus: +1000 agreement!

Bought furniture before and after Kogan took over.

            It's now gone to shit.

            China is the problem. Again!

            • +2

@nilesstandish: The problem isn't China. Most Apple products, for instance, come from there.

The problem is greedy, arrogant Australians who expect high-quality products at rock-bottom prices. They apparently don't understand basic economics.

              • @john71: Had to LOL that some Apple fans downvoted you

              • @john71: Or overpriced items framed as designer or high quality, when in reality it's good marketing (photography) and sky high margins (greed).

But at the end of the day your not forced to buy their product - illusion of high price = quality doesnt mean diddly unfortunatly, thats whats refered to as price illusion.

            • -1

@nilesstandish: The problem isn't China. They'll make quality products… for a price. Kogan isn't willing to pay that price in order to maintain a higher margin.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a Kogan bed and mattress - Ovela Brand before I made the move and lasted me for 2 years. I had the same thought as the dining table and dresser I had ordered were of the same brand.
        NEVER AGAIN.

      • That’s why he posted in OzB. Thinking we’re all cheapskates and able to find some pity regarding his experience. Lol

    • I do think the price it shows appear to be pretty resonable. I assume the OP originally paid $75 for the shipping right? So charging both ways and only 15% cost for restocking is definitely not bad imo.

The delivery fee for a TV is usually around $60 and I have recently bought an office chair and the delivery they would've charge would be about similar (I live in Sydney metro)

So for a Sofa to be delivered for $75 does sound resonable.

Matt Blatt is now owned by Kogan
It used to be semi decent…. the product quality (and in turn the customer service) has gone to pot since they took it over.

  • +3

I've had some real crap delivered by Kogan Marketplace sellers. Sorry to hear you have too. I'm not sure why they still have customers, after sales experience is the worst.

    • +1

I don't know why anyone would use any 'marketplace' option whilst buying online.

If sellers have been banned from ebay or amazon why would a buyer go out of their way to find them.

      • why would you say they have been banned from amazon or ebay? maybe it's their choice.

  • +28

I don't know why anyone would buy furniture sight unseen. Furniture is so subjective, and it's very hard to ascertain things like tactility or cushioning without actually trying it in a showroom first. Plus, it's Matt Blatt, not Ikea, so you don't have thousands of online reviews with which to do your homework.

Restock + return freight is standard practice. You're paying hundreds of dollars because you bought thousands of dollars worth of furniture.

  • +1

Make the complaint, if the items you purchased are not as described, then you should get a full refund including return shipping with no fees.

    • +4

Good luck getting anywhere with this.

The ACCC refuses to enforce its own rules regarding this.

Not sure why they even exist, TBH.

      • +1

        agree

      • +1

Anecdotally the ACCC is only interested in large breaches of the ACL. Individual cases you're better off dealing with your state's office of Fair Trading.

        • +2

A Current Affair on channel 9 or any other daily Current Affairs media programme is actually better than both ACCC and NSW Fair Trading.

          Always gets results.

Business hates bad publicity, unless they are Telstra - who doesn't seem to care, based on previous experience.

NSW Fair Trading always tell you: "we can only try mediation, if they ignore us and you, you need to take them to Court, even if they broke the law."

          • +1

@nilesstandish: Never dealt with Fair Trading myself, so thanks for the input :)

the couch which I purchased for $594.00

I had a look around a few years ago for a couch and I realised that you don't get very much couch for $600.
If you do end up returning it, just take your money to Ikea. That $600 couch I got from them has lasted me almost 4 years so far!

I did well off a saved gumtree search for 'Jardan' - a fancy made in melbourne brand. Got two of their armchairs (rrp about 3.5k each) for 250 each.

The saved search still comes through and I keep seeing great looking sofas listed mostly in beachside suburbs for ~1000 - well worth it IMO

      • +1

We have a lot of Jardan chairs in our office building, almost spat out my lunch when I googled the price. Nice little round swivel chairs.

  • +9

This is why Hardly Normal still makes record profits. Part of why anyway. You may overpay for it, but you can at least sit on the exact same model furniture before paying.

    • My parents bought a leather lounge suite from HN and paid extra for a leather 'upgrade'. It took a few years of use but it became apparent that the upgraded leather was as thin as anything and started peeling away…it's so hard to find anyone that actually makes a decent product these days.

      • +3

Leather doesn't peel, it cracks eventually. They got fake leather.

        • +1

Exactly…they paid extra for an upgraded leather and ended up with something that wasn't even real leather…maybe it was upgraded fake leather.

          • +1

@knasty: Purchased dining seats from Adriatic, and we specifically paid for leather.

When we received them, they weren't leather. They didn't smell like it and felt off… They sent us fake (PU) leather seats instead. And after an ordeal they finally admitted to it and swapped them over.

Fake leather is the worst and does not last. It is guaranteed to crack and peel.

            • @Harold Halfprice: Been suckered a few times with PU/ bonded leather chairs and belts.

    • +1

      Yep exactly right.

We got ours from Domayne. Not much over 1k. It's Australian made. It's damn comfy, very solid fabric that won't rip. When a bit of the frame broke, they sent someone out to fix it and we had it back in a few days.

You get what you pay for with furniture.

  • they were on a current affair, very dodgy

  • +10

For the change of mind fees. This is ridiculous. Clearly its a vicious tactic so they can get away with returns and discourages customers to do so

Alternatively, they can refuse change of mind returns, as stores are not legally obligated to offer this.

    • +1

Also they get the furniture back from people and it's stained or scuffed, they have to spend money repairing it or taking a hit by selling it at a discount. I wouldn't offer free change of mind returns if costs me hundreds to ship them in the first place. I wouldn't be running a non profit removalist company.

  • +5

I made a purchase of over $1200 that night. Soon after, I had thought about looking at reviews

You bought at a low price point and it didn't turn out to be better quality, and you want the seller to reimburse you for this discovery and change of mind?

  • +5

Kogan is a scummy businessman and was on ACA for years comparing his products and prices to Harvey Norman. He doesn't anymore as Kogans products are cheap and nasty, the business has breached and been fined for breaking consumer laws and they still are dodgy to this day.

I think many people need to go into an actual store to try furniture as it takes a short time to figure out if it looks and feels cheap and nasty like your product turned out to be, but having the name 'Kogan' on it should have alerted you.

In your case, the item was as described and i'd be taking that partial refund ASAP because you will feel like you have been scammed very time you sit on that awful furniture.

  • Matt Blatt was always pretty ordinary for the price - even prior to Kogan buying them out. I got a few things but they tended not to wear well (eg dining chairs that came apart after a couple of years).

  • Can anyone recommend a good brand furniture - we need an entertainment unit that is solid and can hold at least 45-50kg. (77" tv and sound bar etc)

    Budget is approximately $2,000?

    • +1

legit anything that is solid timber. that's a fairly minor weight, even my hollow ikea desk can hold 50kg. spend a day looking at styles and settle on a type then go look at everything within that style.

      • I am purchasing online so its hard to know what is solid timber.

Some websites don't even mention if its solid or veneer or some crap cardboard material.

Also whats annoying me is the delivery time. 12-14 weeks most places.

        • +1

          Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace et al.

Find something timeless and solid in construction - if it needs some love, do it up yourself or get it done professionally for a fraction of what it would cost you to buy something new.

You couldn't pay me to settle on the nasty junk coming out of the majority of furniture retailers in Australia.

edit: or Jardan if your budget allows for it.

          • +4

@The Quote Train: Second this suggestion.

Many older people are downsizing and struggling to give away solid wood furniture for free. The only thing you need to do on your part is to organize transport.

We got 2 buffets (one is the perfect standing desk in my study) and shelf a couple of months ago from the next street when the couple put their houses up for sale - they wanted us to take more and was going to get their landscape gardener transport it in his ute to our home. The wife helped me carry it home - We had to do it in the evening and then the morning. Last Friday we got a futon base and mattress from a couple who had just sold and were downsizing - luckily it folds up and fits in the boot (I have lots of practice with this) and the husband and two boys helped carry it to the car. But we still had to get it in the house and upstairs. Boy are the pieces f'king heavy compared to flat pack - but will last a lifetime.

          • @The Quote Train: Plenty of Jardan on gumtree!

    • Had good results from furniture liquidators or seconds places. We were looking at dining tables and everywhere else was overpriced cheap stuff. The seconds place sold us a solid wood table for $1.8k with six chairs comparable to solid wood tables that were 2.7k+ at some retailers. Chairs were extra at those retailers as well, so more than a fifty percent saving and quality was good. Just make sure they have a lot of stock and check the item well. Went to one were it was two guys in a warehouse and the items were in pretty bad shape, with liquid damage etc.

    • +3

I may get down voted, but I find IKEA are actually good. They have improved on quality, and the replacement warranty is great.

      • +2

I used an ikea couch for 10yrs then sold it for abt 70% of what I had paid for. Still have a bed that looks as new after 15yrs. If you look after your stuff they generally serve you very well.

      • A huge percentage of our furniture pieces are from IKEA. I can confirm just ONE failure. Technically, SIX failures, because it was six chairs where the plastic seat started cracking. That being said, they were definitely light duty chairs and were used daily for 8 years before failure and the frames themselves remained in really good nick.

Every other IKEA piece in the house is still in good shape.

      • Yep, agreed. Bout half our stuff is from ikea.

Just don't buy the cheapest line of any product, it's usually garbage and a temporary solution. Get the stuff made of solid timber. We have had a bed frame made from pine from them that cost us maybe $200? And it's lasted through 3 moves and five years solid as so far.

Meanwhile similarly priced stuff my parents have purchased from fantastic furniture or similar has disintegrated after they moved once.

I decided to keep it rather than get the version I paid for. Was about $900.

    • https://www.iconbydesign.com.au they have a showroom at Castle Hill and Moore Park I believe

    Kogan's new tagline should be

"the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten"

    • Kogan TVs are pretty good for the price. Got a 32" TV for my deck for $250 and if it gets wet and breaks then at least it was cheap.

Thus why I wont buy online… did it once, wont do it again.. pay more - happy always.

Go and try things before buying them, test fart on them if you have to.

  • It was this one wasn't it?

  • +2

I'd only buy furniture online, sight unseen, if it was to be used a display furniture when selling a house. Good from far, far from good.

    Cheaper than renting it.

Makes me laugh when people are surprised at the (lack of) qualify of Matt Blatt furniture.

The company's raison d'etre is ripping off designers, I'm sure they have no ethical issue ripping off the customer too.. I'm sure Kogan are more than happy to carry the baton.

  • After having a look at the Matt Blatt site, they clearly state when it's a 'Marketplace product'. I find it bizzare that they would take a brand and turn it into the kogan of furniture. I don't think a marketplace product can be considered genuine matt blatt and it is misleading to customers.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the hassle of a return. Try to on sell on fb marketplace or gumtree to recoup costs, you'll still be out of pocket but if you're lucky it will be less than the fees.

    • +2

'genuine matt blatt' is an oxymoron.

That's like saying the product isn't a genuine counterfeit.

      • I don't really know anything about Matt Blatt, just thought it was a furniture brand?

  • +3

Had a friend that worked at Matt Blatt. She honestly thought it was the best luxury furniture money could buy. I pointed out it was just imported knockoffs for cashed up bogans, we haven't talked since.

Oh well, I just looked her up on FB to see what she's doing since their insolvency and she is selling "Luxury Handmade Candles". How original…./s

    • hahahaha - if your friend the poster above?

    Buying a couch online…lol

  • +2

For the change of mind fees. This is ridiculous

Well considering they don't even need to take it back for change of mind, you should thank yourself lucky.

the couch which I purchased for $594.00 would cost me

So you got a cheap couch and then complained that said cheap cough is well ummm cheap

  • Maybe try before buying, aka go to a bricks and mortar store and support them?
Same with beds, wouldn't buy one without laying down on it first.

I sat on probably 50 or so couches before buying mine, it's a long term purchase and the last thing you want is to end up with something crap.

Only things i'd buy online are things that i know how they'll perform such as phones/electronics

  • How do you think the is couch poor quality? Rough fabric? If so, it's not exactly faulty. I guess it's hard to describe a fabric "roughness" through an online advertisement and through pictures. As others have said - best to try before you buy as furniture feel is so subjective.

  • +2

More like Kogan and Matt Blatt. I regret buying on Kogan and I regret buying from Matt blatt and Luxoliving. You pay for what you get.

    • -1

You pay for what you get.

      That is profound…

  • I did realise that Mattblatt was bought over by Kogan but didnt know Mattblatt went into liquation!

Ive purchased a lot of my furniture from the previous Mattblatt.

I noticed Lounge Lovers sell VERY VERY similar items from Mattblatt ..

    • a lotta armchairs sold on the internet look pretty much the same - Made in China - I kinda lost interest when the 'quality' was gonna be outsourced from the start
