Ok Son is wanting to upgrade his gaming computer. So new CPU, Ram, and Motherboard. Reusing Graphics card, SSD, and case. He's had his current setup for 5 years.

Wanting the more computer savi ppl to comment on whether he has chosen good parts, and if there are cheaper elsewhere.

Thanking all in advance.

He is 12 and is going to put it together himself. With the help of Big Bro. He is also paying for the parts with the money he has saved.

Be aware the Ryzen 5000 series (successor to 3000 series, there was no 4000 series for desktop) have just come out. Previous generation parts may fall in price soon.

If he wants to upgrade right now, then so be it. Otherwise, if his current rig is still fully functional and it won't kill him to wait a few weeks or months, he may be able to save a little more.

    • He's getting frustrated with the performance of the current set up. How much of a saving do you think we might get if we wait a few weeks. If it's like $50 then he might just get it now, but if it's more like & 100 plus maybe he might wait.

Those aren't bad parts, but they're bad parts for the money.

Trade the 3700x for a 3600 for a $200 savings, they'll come down in a price a bit if you wait, but not by much.

Then use the savings to get 32GB 3600mhz and a b550 board. Way better futureproofing, and the 3600 is nearly identical for gaming.

I would buy these based on the current shopping express sale, $600 + shipping:

If RGB ram is worth the premium then this is a better buy too:

    • Thanks @Jolakot Will get him to check these out. He's put some items in a cart for further review. Definitely some savings there.

Also is shopping express site legit.

      • Yep I've used them for buying Ram, and they were good. But I haven't had to use their customer support or after sales so I can't comment on that

          Some bad reviews on returns

@Melb69: I've bought and RMA'd parts from shopping express before, their cheaper prices do come from a lack of after-sales support, but I still use them for stuff like RAM. I wouldn't buy anything other than PC parts from reputable brands from them, stuff like laptops or networking gear with high fail/return rates aren't worth it.

If you'd prefer to pay a bit extra to get amazing after sales support, PLE are the best in the business. Centrecom isn't bad either if you prefer somewhere you can drive to, just avoid Scorptec and MSY as they're on the same bottom tier for service.

            • @Jolakot: @jalakot Thks. We are looking at Centre Com

  • Perhaps get a Ryzen 5 3600 and non RGB ram

Yep RGB is an extra. I made him put that on, so he could make a saving on that if he gets standard ram.

Why would you force rgb on anyone.

        • More I suggested it and he just jumped on that idea. So still his descision than me making him select RGB ram. He already has RGB lighting in his computer, and there are always posts on RGB ram here. Didn't even know it was a thing. I don't see it as an issue. He just told me the ram he likes is $5 more in black than white. His whole computer is black. Makes sense to go black even if you pay the extra to keep it all looking tidy. My colleague has been slowly changing all his hardware and gear to white. Eveything and RGB. Vinyl wrapping in white, and white liquid cooling set. Each to their own.

Any tips on the list then other than no RGB for the ram
