I have all the ones you listed, you are just missing Catan from that list to make it the essential gateway pack. Great games, wife and I love playing Pandemic even though we argue constantly about strategy.

    • Catan is my go to at the moment. Have Pandemic but just haven't got around to it and just got Carcassonne big box on the recent deal.

      • Well you are playing a great game and 2 other great games waiting on the sidelines so you are all set!

    • Would highly recommend pandemic legacy season 1 if you enjoyed pandemic. It turns base pandemic into a unique story experience across a 12-month year with more at stake because each round progress carries across.

If I could play it blind again at full RRP of $130, I would.

      • Have pandemic kids love it
Bought legacy S1 haven't played it yet as kids too young to understand the concept of making permanent changes to the game

What would you recommend as a good two player for someone that has just played monopoly before :)

    • +1

      heaps of options

      lost cities
      jaipur
      fox in the forest
      schotten totten
      7 wonders duel

can be played as two player (or more)

      santorini
      splendor
the crew quest for planet nine

    • Twilight Struggle is easily one of the best two player board games I've played, takes a bit of learning and each game can last hours, but worth it. Patchwork on the other hand is super quick and simple, it's good but I wasn't the biggest fan (a little too simple and abstract for me). Dominion is awesome if you like card games, not that complicated/long and a lot of variety with the expansions. Carcassonne is a classic that works well with two players (can go up to five), again a lot of variety with expansions.

      • (TS takes hours to comprehend and the same to play one game, certainly not for everyone even if they have time)

      • There's always that one guy who recommends something ridiculously complicated to the guy who has only ever played Monopoly…

        • +1

At least the guy who points out that games are cheaper on eBay has the day off

          • @docians: I wonder what the crossover is between the type of person who recommends Twilight Struggle to someone who only plays Monopoly and the person who recommends Dark Souls to someone who only plays Candy Crush…

            • +1

@choodi: I’m on your side mate. Agree that TS is not a gateway game and will probably be a struggle ( pun intended) for someone new to the hobby.

I’ve played patchwork and didn’t enjoy it. I’ve seen videos and assume that I won’t enjoy Barenpark and Isle of Cats

    • Pandemic is great for 2 players and lots of fun. Catan needs some board changes with two players but still great, Carcassone is also great out of the box. I only play these games with my wife so tried and tested and we only knew monopoly before playing these games. I find ticket to ride a bit basic, more suited to a family with young kids as it's easy to pick up and play

      • Cheers for all the feedback. Pandemic it is. Thanks

  • If getting Carcassonne should I get the big box for $92.96?

    • In most cases no

As many have said the game is great and so are a couple of expansions, but not all

A majority of us have played only with 1-2 expansions

My 2c is buy the base, and if you absolutely love the game and only want to play this then yes the big box would have absolutely worth it

In most cases you are better of spending your $50 on another game

Eg if you have none of the above games then you are better off buying Carcassonne base plus TTR/ Pandemic (or both) than the big box

  • Prices seem to be back to normal price now?

  • Would highly recommend skipping pandemic and go straight for pandemic legacy season 1. It's possible to get it below $60 and you are looking at a much better board game experience. I owned both and finished legacy s1. Not that pandemic is a bad game, but it's just overshadowed by legacy season 1. Also, it's possible to play base pandemic on the legacy prior to starting the legacy part.
