Buying a Mazda CX-5 Maxx - Is This A Good Deal?

I am looking at a new Mazda CX-5 Maxx with automatic transmission and the advertised price is $34,292. The best price they can offer is $33,888 + 3 years free service. Is this a good deal or should I negotiate further? I thought normally we can negotiate 10-15% but I am not sure in this Covid period.

Any comments are welcome.

    Yes

    • 'Yes' means it's a good deal?

        You’d never get 10-15% off.

If you are happy with the price go for it and get the car, maybe ask for mats to be thrown in.

Do the deal and enjoy the car rather than try for another few hundred off.

Go to another Mazda dealer, perhaps 30min away
Get 2 other offers and you will know if it's a good price or not.
Don't go to the same "chain" dealer in another suburb. Research.

  • Find a dealer with the actual car you want already in stock. That means they have already paid for it and need it sold asap.

    • Does it mean they have already purchased it or have committed to purchasing it some time in the next 30/60/90 days?

      • Already purchased that stock

  • I thought normally we can negotiate 10-15%

Before Covid 19 15% was not an unusual discount to haggle for.

However with production lines shutting down in some countries imports of new cars have dropped to very low levels.

New car prices have increased up to $3k and currently stealerships are holding the upper hand. If you don't pay their price they know someone else will.

If you aren't in a hurry to buy wait until at least next year, things may improve.

  • I would probably offer at most $33,000 + mats and the servicing. Let them know the offer and make sure they have your contact details, and be prepared to walk.

Don't eat their BS about thin profit margins etc. etc. They can probably take $33k.

Get them to throw in floor mats - done.

    Probably best to question it here;
    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/327jmw59?p=174
They record history of purchases in the spreadsheet and are all over the specifics for the CX5

    • That's amazing. Whilst I'm not in the market for a car, I did find the contributions there to be insightful.

Op, make sure you check specs and also take into consideration state, and then you can work out whether it's a deal for you. Keep in mind there's absolutely no guarantee you'll get whatever the lowest price on the Google Sheet is, but at least it gives you some idea of where you can aim for.

I was negotiating in Melbourne for a CX-5 Maxx FWD automatic about a week ago. They seemed very motived, the most motived to do a discount of any dealer I spoke to (ended up with a Seltos though).

They seemed happy negotiating around the 32K range. From my research 31.5-32.5k should be doable. 2 things to keep in mind, first CX-5 has lost its top position since RAV4 and popularity is waning (not a reason not to get it, but I think dealers are a bit more desperate) and second, a new model is due before the end of the year with larger (10inch screens across the range) , it may be worth waiting a few weeks, even if you don't care about the minor update you should get a better deal on this years model. Also, ring a few dealers, walk out if you have to, I think you should be about to do at least 1k better. But depends how desperate you are and if you want one of the premium paint options.

Another tip, is try to work out if they have one in stock, they tend to be more motivated on those. It is often better to lie bit about how keen you are, because if they think you need one immediately, they may hold out on price. Also go to the local dealer websites like suburbmazda.com.au and you can usually see their stock on line (may be out of date) but should help in narrowing down where else to call.

    Good luck.

  • We had a CX5 but really, if its petrol the only good one is the 2.5 4wd version.

The 2.0 fwd is kind of eh….

  • I ended up buying the car for 33K with the mats, full tank of petrol and premium plates but no 3 years service. Not a bargain but probably around market price according to whirlpool's spreadsheet.

    • The removal of 3 years service is worse than the offer of $33,888 with service
Service would cost you around $2-2.5K over the 3 years. Have you thought about that!
