Recommend Fans for Upcoming Melbourne Summer

We just had our baby a couple of months back and the 29 degree day last week here in Melbourne gave us a trailer of what bub is going to face, come summer. He got really uncomfortable as the temperature went up after 1PM
We have a pedestal fan (the el-cheapo $20 one off Kmart) in our master bedroom but it did squat on that day.
An air conditioner is not possible as it would require structural changes to fit the unit. Similarly a ceiling fan is out of question due to the lack of ceiling height.
Is the Dyson blade less fan really an option?
Happy for any other suggestions to get bub through summers.

Thanks!

Recommend Fans for Upcoming Melbourne Summer

Only. Should make for a great summer and side hustle. All the best.

  • It took me a second to comprehend that. Good one. :D

  • One of the Vornado Air Circulator's could be good, there's a few different models to suit your room size. Someone even uses one for their baby room (Amazon review).

    • Thanks for this. Some of the reviews mentioned that these facilitate better air circulation in an airconditioned room.. So I presumed this was an add-on to having an AC. Perhaps my thinking is incorrect then.

    • We have 2x Vornado fans. They are awesome. They move a lot of air around at full speed. Like all fans though, they don’t ‘cool’ the air (need an AC for that) but do make a considerable difference to comfort.

      • Wondering if I should get 1 vornado and use it in conjunction with a cheap evaporative air cooler (kmart one is available for $89)

    • seconded - Vornado has been a lifesaver

  • It's not ideal/efficient, but have you looked into portable air-conditioning units?

    • Any suggestions for portable air cons? Do they have those tube discharges for the water?

      • -1

Yes, if the tank gets full enough you need to empty it, they usually come with a hose.

      • Some will self evaporate the condensation water build up.. also if you did get when with a tank, its good to know how big the tank is and make sure the tube is not at the base of the unit, need it up a little to get a container to drain into..

I had one of those a while ago and during those Melbourne summer I never once have to drain the water, took the plug out a couple of time but always dried. Probably any amount of condensed water would reevaporate in the air shortly afterward, the thing just chew through power like no tomorrow but only managed to bring down the temp down to barely tolerable level (i.e. 30 degree C when it was around 36 elsewhere in the house on those 40+ days)

  • Kmart fan will be no different to something more expensive because pushing hot air is not going to properly cool you.

Glad I'm not you when it hits 40+ in February.

  • Could you get a portable air con?

    • Do portable air cons need the discharge vent for the water?

  • If the air is already hot, a fan won’t give you “wind chill” to cool you down enough.

Think air fryer, it’ll just make heat distribution more efficient in the room 🥵

Dyson won’t create cool air, it’s not an AC, safer around kids as it doesn’t have exposed blades, but same outcome as a regular fan for “cooling”.

  • I have a Kambrook 40cm DC Quiet Pedestal Fan White - KPF849WHT and I find it quite good. We leave the ac off unless it’s a heatwave and it keeps us cool.
Is a window ac an option? If renting your can build a frame rather than drilling into the window frame. Then you will have 1 cool room.

Consider a hotel stay if the weather gets too much in the hottest part of summer.

I would recommend Honeywell 2.9kw Portable AC
Try to find one 2nd hand
Reputable , Energy Efficient , Get Cold fast and low noise level
Did some heavy research into this area couple summer ago
    Pretty happy with purchase

    • Does this need the discharge vent for the water?

      • Yep you do, a hose attachment to a bucket

How low are your ceilings? If they're minimum legal building code standard (2.1m) a ceiling fan is fine.
Cheap to install and super efficient.

Happy for any other suggestions to get bub through summers.

Contrary to some modern beliefs, babies can actually cope with some heat or cold. You don’t need a constant 21 degrees 24/7.

Having said that, being able to reduce the temp is beneficial for comfort. Moving Bub to a cooler room, ensuring there is air movement etc will all help. Dress in cool clothing, or just a nappy. Natural fibres etc. dabbing a damp/wet washcloth, cool bath etc all help.

Plenty of people take babies camping in summer with no AC and make do with a cool breeze and swimming.

    • Good tips there, thanks!

as others have said fans just circulate the air thats already in the room, make a wooden standalone frame to put in front of the fan about 1/2 metre away, hang hessian over frame , wet hessian and have end soaking in tray of water fan will blow air though cooling as it does, best to keep fan on medium and slow rotation pretty much a coolgardie safe approach, change water regularly add a bit of dettol to stop mould

  • Folks, what about an evaporative air cooler like this Kogan one?

    Or this Hyundai one -
