Looking for a 2nd Hand Car under 20k

Wife would like a small car with a reverse camera for under 20k. Problem is that i dont know how to buy a second hand car. What should i look out for? Where should i look other than carsales? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I was looking at corolla ascent or the kia cerato. So not sure.

If you are not sure of second hand cars - why not go for a demo car, as good as new but not at the price of one.

    A few tips.

Always get your own mechanic check the car before you spend 20K.

Always check for log books and service history with stamps in there.

Be sure to test drive every car listen for any knocks or keep an eye on the temperature gauge.

Be sure to check the oil colour.

Might be good to go to a car yard as they may offer some kind of warranty?

Please take a friend who knows more about cars and doing deals with you to see any car otherwise a savvy car seller will know you are a novice and take advantage.

Always check the registration papers are accurate and up to date.

For 20k you won't get new car unless something like Hyundai??

  • Ozb needs a car guide. This one appears okay, I only skimmed it though. Make sure to get a mobile mechanic to check it, get a ppsr report (will tell if money is owing, had insurance claimed on it eg written off, and if it's been stolen) and make sure to factor in insurance and registration costs.

Most Corolla's since early 2010's have reversing cameras but not sensors. Make sure to get Ascent sport and up. Newer models are hybrids and come with front cameras for adaptive cruise control and lane guidance.

I'd go carsales since there's more volume. I tried selling my car on gumtree but didn't any serious buyers and sold within a couple of weeks on carsales. Since you are a bit new, you should stick with carsales or a dealer (but they're often notoriously dodgy).

Wife owns one of the new 2019MY Corolla Hybrids… and yet still, a reverse camera, but no reverse sensors…

How about do some Google Search to help yourself first ?

Or, heaven forbid, a forum search…

As much as you're buying the car, you're also buying the seller. If something seems off run.

Go and buy one from a dealer with remaining factory warranty. Don’t purchase any extended warranty or extras the salesman will ask you to.

If you find a car for slightly less but without a reverse camera you should be able to get one fitted for a few hundred. Just do a quick google search to check the model you are looking at can have one fitted easily. Most cars with a decent sized screen should be able to fit one.

Note: I say buy from a dealer only for someone who has no clue about cars. For anyone who has bought and sold previously buying used privately saves $.

There are dealers selling 2nd hand 2018 Hyundai i30 Active's for under $19k. Should still have 2-3 years warranty left and it has a reverse camera. Find them through Carsales.

    • Thanks, i am also looking in this price bracket. Ill check out the hyundai.
