John Boston Session IPA 330ml 4.2% - $24 Per Case of 24 Bottles (Very Limited, Selected Stores Only) @ BWS

640

EDIT: Might be region specific but still shows up for me in inner Northern Melbourne.

Cheapest case of IPA you're ever likely to see in this taxed-up beer nation. This might be a pricing error but hey, make hay while the sun shines.

Stock looks low (under 5 cases in each of my local stores) so get moving, comrades.

Looks like it's been fixed to $52 already

    • My apologies mate looks like its specific to Melbourne

      • Ah makes sense. It changed back as soon as I switched to my local QLD store.

        • I managed to get one for $25.50 on the Sunshine Coast.

      • Thanks smallchange, able to order one @ $24

      • Scratch this folks, looks like its interstate but rare all the same

  • +3

$51 for me and says unavailable.
    Might be area specific

    • Bugger, thanks for letting me know mate, updated

  • unavailable @ $52

    • +1

Apologies mate, didn't realise it was region specific

  • +3

Thanks OP, managed to snag last two in Toorak outlet. No idea what it’s like but worth it at $24 a slab.

  • +4

Is Session the new way of saying mid strength?

    • +2

It's 4.2%, mid strength by IPA standards as these beers are usually 6 or 7 abv, but about normal for regular ales or slightly lower than normal. Not quite mid strength which I would define as about 2.8-3.8 percent

      • Sorry, I thought it was 3.5% like a lot of Session ales.

I notice the labels now say In Honour of John Boston Australia’s first brewer. They never used to say In Honour Of and made out it was a brewer still related somehow to the original.

    • Session is less about ABV and more about hopiness. You don't need to say "session pale ale" because they are largely easy drinking as hops are used mainly for aroma and flavour in those styles and in relatively low hop volumes whilst IPA's use a lot more hops for complex flavour profiles and a lot more hops early on so they are generally more bitter so I suppose they find it useful to tell customers this IPA is not as hoppy so you can drink 20 pints of it however you can tell by the price. No one is making an amazingly flavourful IPA for $50 a case.

      • There's no hard and fast rules as to what's a "session" IPA. Sometimes it's marketing fluff. To me, it is a lower ABV beer meant to allow drinkers to have some (many) without falling over, as may happen if you are drinking 7% IPAs. Your comment on bitterness being less is often true, but that's a function of balancing the beer. Less alcohol and malt need less bitterness to balance it. A 65 IBU Session IPA might be too bitter, but that's where Sierra Nevada's Torpedo IPA lands and its a lovely beer (and at 7% it works well).

Checked a few places around North Melbourne: Flemington, Ascot Vale, Kensington, Moonee Ponds. All showing unavailable.

    • It appears to be a radically rare deal, I've only been able to find a handful of outlets - post title amended to reflect this

  • +2

Not an error. Picked one up on Friday. Stock was so small didn't think it was worth posting.

Was pleasantly surprised by the taste for a Woolworths brand.

  • -3

It's good to see the deal has been canned and stopped so many of you from drinking this awful pig-swill knock-off of James Squire.

    • +6

'James Squire' aka a folksy name for beer produced by Lion in the old Hahn brewery, is every bit as confected and cynical a brand as this one mate but cheap is cheap :)

      • +1

I agree with both of you!

Personally, I don’t like how the big supermarket chains buy/make a home brand beer and then make the label look exactly the same as a big name. Marketing leeching.

Hmm I guess that’s why I don’t shop at Aldi too.

    • +1

I'm a beer snob, and the pale ale is an absolute cracker.

  • +2

Bought one from Dandy South - for $24 good deal :)

  • +1

Grabbed the last from South Morang, thanks Op

    • +3

lol I had it in my cart then pipped at the post! Well done :)

  • +1

    Cheer OP

Paid $25.50 a carton up here in Sydney, thanks OP.

Haven’t picked it up yet, let’s hope it’s not short dated.

  • Thanks $25.50 in NSW. Just ordered the last one at Wyong, 2259

  • They're probably clearing it out, I did notice BWS Glenelg in South Australia didn't have it available but the full carton was $25.50 so they must have had it on clearance

    • Gahhh… i checked this like two days ago when the Yaks were $41. JB was $50+ (and I prefer John Boston).
Called Glenelg direct and a few other stores direct…no dice.

None showing in the state (SA) :(

I picked up 3 cases for $24 each in Leederville, WA on Wednesday last week.

    • +2

Why didn't you post it as a deal?

Ah, you never post any.. 0 deals in 5 years.

  • +1

    can't find it available anywhere

  • Don't bother in Noosa it's sold out. Lol

  • big thanks to the arsehat that grabbed a 6 pack so I cant buy a carton.

    • +1

In the 5 minutes in thinking how would I tell the Mrs we need to go and get cheap beer and when I decide to buy, Coburg went from 2 cases available, to 23 single stubbies available. I guess someone got a carton and a single. I'm sure they would have given the carton price in store

      • +2

No this happened to every store I looked at that had availability in South East QLD. It occurred 4 times over that region, or otherwise was sold out or had single bottles only.

I think they modified the inventory to have a MAX of 23, so that no one can order a full case. They probably stuffed up on the national offer and did this to stop people nation wide purchasing it, instead of just Melb.

    • should have told the guy if he wants to split a carton. he'd be getting another 6 beers for the same price he paid

  • +5

Just bought one. Best before Feb 2021.
Drinking one now - I like it.
    Thanks for posting it.

    • where did you manage to find one?

      • Sorry - only saw your question now. Sunbury VIC

  • +1

    *hay

  • Couldn’t find any around Ringwood, Dandenong, Belgrave, Doncaster, Camberwell, Richmond VIC.

    • +1

because there are none available anyway

  • +1

Picked up the last one from Blue Mountain Heights in Toowoomba..

    • +1

      that's so far away!

  • Just picked up a slab at Dandenong South, was the last one. It was only showing 3 packs at the time so it helps to call around.

  • If you can't find this, look out for the John Boston Pale Ale can 30 packs for $33.50. Possibly pretty rare, so good luck finding it.

  • Ferntree Gully had a couple around midday, not my cup of tea…

  • +1

Picked mine up this evening, they had to give me 3 six packs and 6 singles lol haven't tried yet as I'm on self imposed diet for the whole of November. These will have to wait until December.

  • +1

Not a drop available in WA by the looks…dammit!

  • Picked mine up, all of them expired on 09/09.
