DIY Home Theatre Equipment. Projector, Ceiling Speakers, Receiver

Hi Everybody,

We are looking at installing a Home Theatre setup. The Audio and HDMI/ Power cables have already been installed, now we just need to buy all theAV equipment, and connect it.

Have been waiting for a sale on a Projector, such as the Epsom EH-TW5600, but would prefer to buy a similar unit that's now more affordable.

Also will need 4 (or 5?) ceiling speakers. Any either built-in subwoofer, or a standalone subwoofer.

Plus a receiver, and all the connectors / wall plates.

Can you please provide some recommendations for products / websites / systems that provide the best bang for your buck? The intention is to fit it out, use it for 2 years, and eventually sell the house.

Thanks in advance.

Rio Sound and Vision usually have some decent deals.

I setup a mates HT room with a Yamaha AVR and Klipsch speakers. The only thing he cheaped out on was the sub (the wife gets annoyed easily). It really takes the wind out of what should be an 'awesome' experience and turns it into a 'pretty good' setup.

Bought some Canton towers and a MK Sound subwoofer there for a ridiculous price. The staff are super helpful too.

But yeah, the sub makes the system for real.

  • Optoma HD30HDR?

  • Smart blackout blinds would be good too, so you can black out your room at the touch of a button.

  • 4 or 5 ceiling speakers?
Is your intention that the front and centre channels are also ceiling mounted?

Expect a pretty significant depreciation hit on that gear as it won't effect how much you sell the house for if youre leaving all that gear behind.

    • Yeah, my understanding is most systems should have 5 or 7 speakers, but how this was roughed in, there's currently only 4.
Happy to do an additional cable for the 5th one if it will make a difference - not sure what the intention was when only 4 were roughed in.

      All are in the ceiling.

Yeah, hence why I'm happy with a refurbished unit, etc, depending on what is worth it.

I looked at previous BenQ refurbished units, but their website is currently down.

You definitely only want surround speakers to be in ceiling. The front 3 should never be up there unless you want to be very disappointed.

Here was ours 3 years ago - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/337261

We used a bullnose plate behind a cabinet for all the cables (HDMI, network, surround speaker wires) and ran the front speakers, centre speaker and subwoofer straight to the receiver. For surround speakers, we ran the wires into the speaker bracket itself so didn't need wall plates.

  • Selby's are worth a look

Keep a lookout at Epson’s Clearance Centre.
They had a refurbished EH-TW5600 there yesterday for $689.40 with 1yr warranty (it’s gone now).

I pulled the trigger yesterday on a refurbed unit of the EH-TW9400 with 3yrs warranty further down that listing.
If you’re patient, they do appear from time to time.

    • Thanks,

I looked late last night, but must have been sold out. That's exactly what I'm after (on the projector side).

Now to sort out which speakers to get ,and AV receiver.

      • Yeah. They do tend to go fast. Just keep checking periodically.
