Harvey Norman Toshiba 8GB/16GB USB Drive $8/$15

1090

Cheapest I've seen them for a long time, very worth it. I brought one 8GB last time and regretted not getting more.

Toshiba 8GB USB Drive $8
Toshiba 16GB USB Drive $15

Limit 2 per customer.

I know last night at HN Greensborough [VIC] they had a lot of 8GB ones, not sure of 16GB.

  • Good deal. That buy one, get one free phone deal could be good too.

    • +9

Except the fine print says 'limit one per customer' so your free one stays at the store. I am joking, but maybe a limit of one offer or 2 phones would be clearer.

  • +2

    I want that pink laptop.

    • +10

No problem, I think most of the guys will leave them for you…

      • +2

You just can never be sure in the 21st century.

  • +1

    Wow Wow Wow!
The 16GB would make a nice addition to my new TV which has inbuilt PVR for extended recording in SD.

    • -1

Yes, I don't think I've seen a 16GB at that low price, I'm sure they were at least $16 last time they had the sale.

      • +3

so after all this time, $1 cheaper now? :D

    • +2

Price of those USB flash drives are pretty good, but rated maximum transfer speeds are very disappointing (17MB/s read, 3.9MB/s write), usually when the manufacturer spec says "up to a certain speed" , real world performance is even less. So I guess those will be extremely slow for writing. Check your PVR's recommended write speed before you buy one of these for video recording. Because unless your PVR uses a highly compressed codec, a USB stick with a write speed around 3.5MBps (or possibly lower) may not work.

      Specs: http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/storage/usb/pa3875a-1ma…

      • +1. I'd rather spend abit more for a USB that can write at least 18-20MB/s :)

      • I have the 16gb, they are a bit slow!
Also they don't have the "read/write LED", not sure how useful it is for other, but i prefer to have the LED not blinking while pulling it out! :p

    • it really depend on the write speed!

your TV wouldn't record in HD if it's not up to the speed!

  • Well spotted. One for my PVR and one for the car stereo.

  • I bought 2 of the 8Gb ones the last time they were on special - both suffered data loss around the same time - one become unreadable after using at work and taking back home, the other was fine, went to open a file, next thing I know the allocation table was corrupted….

Maybe there is a reason they are so affordable?

After quick format of the unreadable drive, write speed was around 600kb per sec. A full reformat restored its writing speed…. Maybe I just had a bad batch?

Actually I've had my 8GB one 'fail' a few times. I always put it down to no 'ejecting' them from the host computer. But you could be right. I hope it's not indicative of the whole production line.

        Hi Rumbaar,

By default windows will not cache a USB drive unless you tell it to (which is useful when you are copying 1000s of small files) - Under the device properties this shows up as 'Optimize for quick removal' - This setting disables write caching on the disk and in Windows, so you can disconnect this device without using the Safe Removal icon'… Of course this does not apply to using applications that may leave files open until you exit the application.

My train of thought is its always good practice to safely remove a device so that it is powered down gracefully.

For those reading this if you do ever find their USB/SDCARD compromised by data loss, try photorec to see what you can recover (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec) and remember to backup your data regularly (working in IT its amazing how many people you run across who experience data loss who do NOT have a backup)..

        • -1

Thanks for that. Yes I tend to use the 'eject' feature of Windows, but I get lazy at times and I'm sure that is when I get file corruptions.

        • +2

How about use it in Car Stereo? Should we switch off stereo before pulling it out?

    • Agree, I bought one a while back, did not work, took it back and the 2nd one died after about a week or 2. no exchange this time only refund, I would not buy one again. The service guy at the time said they have had quite a few fail.

      • +1

That might explain the low price… Officeworks pulled a similiar trick a while back when they were selling gel pen packs for 50 cents for 5 black pens.. I bought a whole stash thinking they were good value… Now a few weeks later when I need them each pen I take out of the pack doesn't work.. Feel like going back and dumping the 40 pens or so on the managers desk and saying I'm reporting them to consumer affairs - if a company knows that a product has a high failure rate above normal they probably have a legal obligation to cease selling the product..

If an item is < $20 I usually don't bother with the hassle if it stops working - being made to feel guilty by the salesperson, filling in forms, signing my soul away ….

  • Do these specials apply to all Harvey Norman stores everywhere?

    • +1

      Doesn't HN price match :)
But the link at the top is for VIC..

      • -6

All 3 Harvey Norman stores on the Gold Coast won't honour it.

        • not a reason for a neg….. the deal is good…. just not available for you

        • -1

Well others in this thread have had success in other QLD HN stores, so sounds like those stores are at fault.

    • campbelltown nsw don't know anything about this, but thats no surprise, they never have many of the specials if they even participate

Got 2 16GB at Bendigo. Weren't marked or ticketed. Showed the dude the ozbargain web site. He cried a bit then let me have them for $15. Well spotted. Thanks!

    • +1

LOL @ cried a bit. Nice!!

  • Yeah, Harvies, um… no thanks. No disrespect to the OP but I think there's better places to be spending my money. Plus, they usually run out of there 1 hour into their "sale".

    • +1

It probably depends on which store you go to.

    • I know what you mean, but if the deal benefits me I don't care where it's sold from. I'll be going tonight to my local and seeing what they have. I'm also going to try and get more than 2.

  • So does all this apply to HN stores nationwide or just Victoria?

    • I went to the Chatswoods store in NSW, The Drives were not in the bargain bin and still marked $28.95 (16GB). There are several left of 8GB and 16GB.
They didn't have it published. (and the upload was QLD).
They said it actually 'starts tomorrow' but was happy to 'do it'. Got 2

      Thanks OP!

  • I brought a 16G when they had them on special last time and it failed within 3 months dead as a door nail :(

    • what about warranty?

  • Straight to Harvey Norman after work :)

    • +1

Straight to Hardly Normal instead of work ;)

      • +1

Harvey Norman = Hardly Normal LOL

        • +1

Type Hardly Normal in google search…Im so used to typing that now I have to stop and think when i want to type Harvey Norman

    • So how long its taking to open a word doc?

  • Just picked up two 16GB USB drives from QV HN - $30 all up :)

IIRC, they had about >40 or so when I left.

  • So 2 HTC wildfire prepaid mobile for $199 and bonus $30 Telstra recharge?

How difficult to unlock it free?

    • As per the screenshot - phone prize can't go over $100

      • My bad not over $100, in that case 2 x Huawei Ideos Virgin Mobile Pre-Paid Mobile Phone for $79

      But look like VIC only?

  • Thanks OP - got one 16GB from Brisbane CBD Store
Have been advised the actual "Sale" starts from tmrw

  • how come no one mention $369 asus transformer tablet? compared to those $3xx acer iconia(sometimes, even refurbished), $369 is not too bad. but for me, still waiting for transformer prime!!

  • +2

Bought two from the Brisbane CBD store. Glad I printed the advert out first.

  • Would anybody know whether this offer is available in Syd / NSW?

    • Yes, just picked 8GB for $8 from the Auburn store(NSW)

    • Yes it seems to be valid for NSW; friends got from a few different stores in Sydney :-)

  • What's the USB quality like?

  • Got two 16s from Bris CBD store. Cashier knew about the ad when I mentioned it and started scanning but then asked me to show it. She pointed out its for Melb stores and isn't valid here. I said that people had mentioned they'd got it at this store and elsewhere and she said no worries and asked for my copy of the ad so she could show her boss.

    • +1

Yeah, just brought 2 16GB at HN Greensborough. She scanned them at $28 and then asked me if that was the correct price. I said no it should be $15 and she changed it and that was that. I should have said $8 :D

    • +1

Yeah, the cashier kept my advert too.

  • i got a 16GB from MSY for $12. But still a good deal.

  • +1

I went to the HN store in City West (Perth) during my lunchbreak today and they denied me the 'deal' because the 'sale' doesn't start until Saturday.

    • The advert does not specify a start date, only an end date. Sounds like they were being a pain!

  • Heaps of 16GB @ HN chadstone on sales … Verbatim, lexar, Toshiba

  • Great price - a couple of weeks ago the 8GB one was $14 at HN Cannington (WA).

  • Scored 2 16gb at the QV store, a few left, maybe 4 or so, it does say limited 2 per customer

  • Can anyone who have bought one please test the read/write speed?

    • +1

Bought one from Hoppers Crossing store. They have plenty of them.

      Read: 14.25 MB/s
      Write: 12.25 MB/s

      Tested using: Check Flash 1.16

      • Not bad. I thought it'd be around ~5MB/s write.

      • Yeah?

Which actual drive did you get? Those figures seem pretty quick.
        Are you sure?

        • +1

I transferred a 350Mb file to one of the 16GB Toshiba sticks and it took 50sec i.e ~7Mb/sec write. Definitely not getting 12.25Mb/s.

  • Has anyone bought the samsung e3210 from optus? Does it come with its USB cable? Thanks

    • Bought two and they both came with the USB DATA cable, as well as the headset and charger. =D Super Happy!

  • Just swung by Preston Vic. Big box but couldn't dig out any 16gb, seems only 8gb left

  • Just went to the Auburn store. They had the 8GB one advertised for $14. And when I asked them if it was $8 they said "not that I'm aware of"… until I showed them the ad. This is extremely deceptive conduct by Harvey Norman. This is not the first time that I have been to a HN store and they have denied a sale exists… until I showed them the ad.

  • It was pretty easy to buy it online (about 11.20am this morning). I will pick it up later in the week. I contacted the shop via email (and they said they were out of stock but more were coming in mid week and to come in then). I had sent an email to the general contact and it was redirected to the manager of my HN where i had organised to pick up from. they will have my two 16G USB held for me. Couldn't be easier. May have to do more online buying for high demand items from HN in future.

  • Been looking for some cheap flash drives for bootable USB installs. Went to HN Ballarat this afternoon. Were out of the 16GB, but picked up a couple of 8GB Lexar Jumpdrives.

  • I managed to get 2x 16g at $15ea and 2x 8g at $5 each totalling $40 From HN Bairnsdale on Friday arvo.
I thought that was a good deal.

    • 8Gbs at $5 each is pretty good.

  • +1

Just went to HN Nunawading, I'm thankful that they ran out of Toshiba 16GB, as they sold me a few 16GB Lexar Jumpdrives for $16!

    • It looked as thought they ran out or didn't have any in stock in the first place since there was no sign for the 16gb Toshibas. =) But I did get 2* Optus Samsung e3210s for 19 bucks. =D

  • The deal was not marked as Victoria only, so it's not a bargain if you can't get it at other outlets. Moreso if we waste fuel confirming the OP was wrong for him.
