Was $396 from UK on prime day

Is this the same as the one from Amazon UK for $429.13 ?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External…

    • Nearly the same, the UK one is actually better, 2 year vs 1 year warranty

Also of note, so far reports are these have a 16TB Exos enterprise 7200rpm drive inside, probably the fastest 16 drive on the market, and the loudest.

I'm not going to downvote you, as you're just repeating what you've read. But I have six Exos 16TB drives out of these Seagate Desktop Expansion drives sitting less than six inches from me, and let me tell you they are significantly quieter (and 20°C cooler) than the HGST 6TB drives they replaced. They're also very fast, combining both high areal density and 9 platters - two heads per platter gives you 18 heads, resulting in an ability to transfer quite a lot of data. Highly recommended, especially for the price.

I'm checking the UK one every day too. No reason to buy the one in this post over the UK one I think.

It's $428.40 as of this post. My buy price is below $400.

@gadgetguy: Same, although I was running out of space so bit the bullet at ~405 with Shopback's 5% off + $3

Man….that could result in a hell of a loss of data if that was to go kaput

so this should either be the backup, or be backed up…..

To put things in perspective, somebody has made that comment about every new HDD that has ever come out.

    • So you mirror, or have multiple layers of redundancy… RAIDZ3 for example. I was actually pleasantly surprised how quickly I was able to integrate these into my own storage server, resilvering only took around 14 hours per drive, which is pretty incredible given their size.

  • Can anyone confirm if these are SMR?

    • So far only reported to contain 16TB Exos enterprise 7200rpm drives, so not SMR

    • Seagate's SMR drives are the Barracuda (not Pro), Archive, Skyhawk Lite/Mini ranges, and all their 2.5" disks (including the FireCuda 2.5"). No other products are SMR, they're all CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording). Seagate also don't have any SMR drives above 8TB, so even if they made a 16TB Barracuda (they don't) and it made it into these enclosures, they won't be SMR unless they develop much higher capacity SMR drives (looking less and less likely with development moving towards HAMR for 20TB and beyond). The only other 16TB drives that are likely to make it into the Desktop Expansion line are the Ironwolf drives, but they must have had either particularly excellent yields of the Exos drives, or a large datacentre order that fell through after production had completed for them to be shipping them out as external drives at half the price the bare Exos drives fetch.

  • Shuckable?

      Eminently.
