Second hand might be enough, just pick up from the street when people dump out or cash converter etc pick one for <$50

I'm guessing no need for high resolutions or refresh rates for just coding.
VESA mount so you can install on the arm. Probably want IPS but VA should be ok too.

Maybe Dell S2721H for $195 after applying coupon code LOVEKEANU

Pretty much this. Anything with a VESA mount would fit most of this criteria.

You just need it to be compatible with what out ports he has available on his laptop he OP will need to pick up some sort of docking station.

Personally for coding I usually prefer 2 (occasionally 3 depending on needs) monitors with at least one having the ability to rotate. It does depend on your style and what you're working on.

You know how to code yet aren't familiar with computer hardware and/or able to research options yourself? :\

      dayum

    • Ooooof. Take that will ya

      It's a different skill set.

Being able to fix a printer, computers, your internet isn't required to code.

That being said, it's rare to see computer hardware illiterate coders. The inability to research options leads me to suspect they're at the beginning of their journey.

      • it's rare to see computer hardware illiterate coders

But they do exist. I used to have a friend who could code shit without problem but would know jack shit about computer hardware who would ask me for advice on what to get for her computer since her last computer died and I was more intune with the hardware side than the software side since I cant code for shit….

I own a LG 34 ultrawide 4k and use acer 27 in office, not very happy with both of them so want to get some sharing from other developers, that's it

      • I'm the opposite. After using a 34" Ultrawide for a couple of years now. It's pretty much impossible for me to switch back to a 16:9 as a main monitor. I mainly do Front End UI work using QT and WPF, and the 21:9 allows me to fit the whole 1920x1080 window with no zooming. When working on the backend 4 columns fit nicely which eliminates the need for a vertical monitor. In the end code files shouldn't scroll unless it's a web project.

        • hah, yes I do web project

I am not very used to reading code in ultrawide as can not very focus on current code area if so many things in same physical screen

      • turn that 4k monitor portrait mode so you get that glorious 3840 height pixel resolution….mmmmmmm………..tasty…and ur 27 inch 1440p or 1080p or whatever as your main landscape monitor for non coding stuff.

I have an aoc 4k 27" one. Very happy. I like ips panels. Easy on the eyes esp on tiny text.

I can't imagine what you think you're going to find in a monitor that will make it better for coding specifically. Did you want your code to look clearer on the screen or something? Maybe go for 1440p or higher in that case then. Anything other than that will be preference (e.g. some people prefer a wider aspect ratio so they can fit multiple windows side by side more comfortably, or narrower aspect ratio so you can have more text/code appear on the screen vertically), or things that make a monitor good generally (e.g. panel types that have better viewing angles or colour reproduction).

    Can be installed on arm

Just make sure it has VESA holes on the back. Most do.

    with laptop

Well that's going to depend on your laptop won't it.

    • For me, a better screen goes a long way when you're looking at it hours each day, for years.

For coding you should be going with atleast 2k resloution or 1440p. I personally use Dell U2520, its 25 inch, I got it at sub $500 with cashback, been using for more than 3 months and i am pretty happy with it.

    • looks awesome, while it is a little bit expensive

      • its one time investment my mate, see what your budget is and go for the best one, as you will be spending too much time on screen, buy a good one, plus Black Friday is around the corner, may you get the best deal in the market.

Within reason I would have thought anything that's vaguely modern will fit this use case. If you're literally just using it to code (and any other no graphics based uses) surely a $200 unit from a big box retailer would be fine?

  • how is dell ultrasharp series

  • Why are you not happy with your LG 34 ultrawide 4k ?

    • too many things in horizontal position make me not easy focus on code area and feel tired soon

while i have to say it is amazing when watching movie or playing game

      • I use a 34 with Displayfusion. You can split up the monitor space so have the coding on one area and things like email, teams on the other.

        • Yes I use screen split tool too, while never not really be used to it
