Need to Transfer 175000 AmEx Points to ????

Hi,

I am not selling the points :-)

I am closing down my Amex card for various reasons.

I have 175000 Amex points.

Would it be more smart to transfer it to Velocity and get 15% bonus or any other program that is superior to Velocity.

I travel a bit to and from regional Western Australia. Have used points several times (Velocity) as it is good value on those routes compared to paying cash.

Just need some advice from some smart ozbargains

  • Your points would be enough for a return Perth-Singapore-XXX <South East Asia city> trip in Business Class which would be pretty cool - you'll need 73,000 KrisFlyer miles or 146,000 MR points for that. Then transfer the remainder to Velocity to get 16,675 Velocity Points, enough for another regional WA one-way Economy trip. Of course, that's heavily dependent on borders.

Otherwise getting 100,625 Velocity Points from the lot might be your best bet, as they should be around for the next few years under the new owners and you could continue with your regional WA trips on the cheap.

    • Really depends if the new Virgin continue to fly regional WA. I thought I read an article they were going to pull out of regional areas having decided to move to a single all 737 fleet.

  • With 175,000 points you will get a 20% bonus when transferring to Velocity

    • You are correct. 20%. Thanks

  • +1

    I think that's about $875 statement credits… I'd just do that.

  • I had the same dilemma a few years ago and put it all into Virgin… eep

If I could choose again, both Asia Miles and Kris Flyer are good choices, however I think have set expiry dates on points. So may depend where you want to go in the future travel wise.

Maybe spread it between 2 options I think would be sensible (like maybe enough to redeem something in one, then remainder into Velocity?)
