Do You Trust PayPal with Your Scanned ID?

Hey All,

I know this topic was discussed a few years ago, but I just want to get new comments from the OzBargian community.

I sold an item on eBay and paid via PayPal for $40, but I got a message from PayPal - "Your account access is temporarily limited" and PayPal is asking to upload my photo ID so I can release the fund and continue to use the service. At the moment I do not use my official name in the account with also an abbreviation for my last name. I can't even delete my credit card information due to the restriction.

I am now unsure whether it is safe to provide my ID to PayPal as my ID may be stored somewhere on an overseas server and may be easily accessible by PayPal staff.

What do you think?

Please advise and comments.

Honestly no different to banks, telecommunications, etc. all these carry risks when you upload your ID. Personally I’d say it’s safe as it’s not like you have mush choice anyway since it’s required under the KYC scheme.

    • Banks , telecommunications companies etc are under Australian jurisdiction and need to follow data privacy laws in Australia. I am not sure of PayPal.

Paypal is an ADI and is required to follow the Banking Act, AML/CFT Act and Privacy Act.

  • I think when I submitted my ID I blanked out part of the number.

  • No way. It makes it easier for them to chase up "debts" both genuine and otherwise.

  • Only respond to official emails and messages. Lots of scam emails phishing for id.

  • wait till facebook asks for your ID

  • I don't like it, but at least it means that someone else posing as me won't be able to imitate my identity as easily

Providing false details id say is what caused your problem

  • having checked this site to see if my email had been compromised, theres no company I'd trust… some of the major companies that havee been hacked and details stolen, what makes Paypal think they are any different???

  • Paypal Australia is a financial institution that is regulated by the Australian Government. That's not a guarantee they will behave properly - see the Royal Commission into banking for many examples where the big banks and other financial institutions didn't behave properly.

    Regulatory Treatment of PayPal Australia

PayPal Australia is considered a provider of purchased payment facilities. APRA regulation requires all holders of stored value in relation to PPFs to be ADIs, unless otherwise exempt. As such, PayPal is prudentially regulated by APRA and subject to capital, liquidity and other operational requirements. It is also the holder of an AFSL issued by ASIC and is a reporting entity regulated by AUSTRAC.

    ADI = Authorised deposit-taking institution
APRA = Australian Prudential Regulation Authority
AFSL = Australian Financial Services Licence
AUSTRAC = Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre

    • The banks are the pillars of Australian society. They promote fair businesses practices with nothing dodgy going on behind closed doors. We should all do our part and support them because they're to big to fail.

      • Yes, our financial and tech overlords saviours would only do good things for people.
