What Retailers Used to Have Great Deals but Do Not Have Any Now?

I was thinking about this and websites such as ozsale came to mind. These are websites that used to be great hidden gems with good deals to be found. However, as they gained popularity, more 'average' aussies found out about it, they just started posting crap or they're prices are too high.

Love to hear about what you guys have experienced.

Good Guys used to be great with their 20% off ebay sales as they did not price jack. Not sure what the exact reason is, it could either be the JB takeover or deciding to get in bed with the rest of the eBay price jacks but their so called eBay sales just fizzled out.

Ozgameshop. They used to have really good sales for games around 2012/2013. Then the sales wasn't as enticing and eventually Amazon came. Shame though because their customer service was great.

Catch of the day, when they used to have 1 item at a good price. Now I just cbf scrolling through their marketplace to see what they have

    • Agreed, and the few times I have looked, I find very little (nothing really) that is worth buying.

Miss all the old Banggood/Gearbest/etc deals, particularly things like cheap wired headphones or laptops.

Most went away when the international GST law was introduced.

  • Petbarn with their double stacked deals. Haven’t seen them since 2017

Any store that used standard global suppliers before the internet will seem expensive after those same supply lines were opened up to anyone and everyone with a computer. You can straight up see the massive markup the stores are doing for the exact same product, even if they just slapped their own branding on the packet.

My local Coles clearance shelf and clearance meat.

    • Seems to vary based on the manager on duty. Sometimes I get absolute steals, other times the discounts are few and far between and usually only a max of 50%. Coles clearances are far superior to Woolworths though, they've really tapered off the stingey buggers.

      • It’s been the opposite for me. Both stores in my area used to be ~80% discount but Coles changed to 20-50% depending on the particular item whilst Wools is 50-80%.

        • Hmm interesting. I regularly get over 80% discount at my local Coles if I time it right (love getting the gourmet cheeses especially), Woolworths can occasionally have a few items put in the fridge at 80% or more off but usually not very appealing stuff, it still goes fast though so you have to be lucky. Woolies use to do big bakery discounts, pies, sandwiches, salad bowls etc but I don't see much of that anymore.

          • @nubzy: I don’t really eat bakery stuff so don’t pay too much attention but both my local Coles and Wools seem to regularly have bakery clearance items more often than meat or veg.

No need to clear them now, they send them to ilove.

I used to buy quite a bit of stuff from Sportsdirect from the UK.
    No longer.

  • Jaycar used to have some great performance audio gear for a low price.

Ebay… regular 20% off code… then 15, then 10, then 5, and now it’s “selected items only” and “5% for Plus users only…”

    • before they met jack😪

  • Remember all the gearbeast stuff? 3D metal puzzles and key ring figurines and that.

Maccas. Soft serve cone used to be 30c.. I thought it was 50c but I just realised it's now 70c. GTFO.

    • The app deals are good, but the general menu has jacked up big time

I got my first “real” led torch from dx, that must have been close to if not 15 years ago

      • +1

Me too, a little Cree torch I still have somewhere. I used to love dx.

        • Mine was a zoomie, terrible by today’s standard but at the time it blew anything you could buy locally away and was something like $40 delivered with batteries and a charger.

      • Is a Cree C3 a real torch, coz that's all I went for lol

But yes the amount of stuff bought from DX back in the day! So many times I thought about setting up a market stall!

  • Belong, used to be free for 2 months with referral

  • These companies starts by attracting you with good deals (make less $$), then need to turn a profit when they have a customer base.

J.Crew. Great quality clothing at the same price the Americans paid, so much better then what we pay in Australia. Also had free shipping at first, then moved to $7 shipping which was still reasonable. Then David Jones made an agreement to carry their products, and suddenly none of their discount coupons applied to Australians, the base prices jumped up by 40-50% and shipping sent up to $35 unless you spent more then $350. The sad thing is If you go on the DJ website, almost of their J.Crew stock is reduced by 50% or more (although still much pricier then in the US) meaning David Jones stuffed up a good thing for Australians to try to sell the same products at prices no Australian would pay.
