The Victorian Government will hand out $200 vouchers for visitors to regional Victoria in a bid to boost tourism in bushfire and COVID-affected towns.

Key points:
The Victorian Government hopes $200 vouchers will lure tourists to regional towns
$47.5 million will go towards a coastal walk and campsites along the Great Ocean Road
$18.5 million aims to boost tourism to bushfire-affected towns in East Gippsland
Premier Daniel Andrews has promised $465 million in this year's budget, to encourage more visitors to regional Victoria as part of the Victorian Tourism Recovery Package.

Victorians who have booked and spent at least $400 dollars on accommodation or tickets to attractions and tours can apply for a $200 voucher for spending money.

120,000 vouchers will be made available from December.

"There'll be quite a simple process to make sure that you can validate that you had an experience and then you will receive the $200 from us," Mr Andrews said.

Voucher system still being worked out
Regional Victorians will also be eligible for vouchers for region to region travel but Tourism Minister Martin Pakula said the details of the voucher system were still being worked out.

"Whether it is upfront or by reimbursement is part of the design," Mr Pakula said.

"I make the point that similar schemes are already in place in South Australia and Tasmania

"In other states, there is a voucher that is printed out, and then people get a refund at the end once they have acquitted that they have spent that money."

Mod: As per guidelines, insufficient details for upcoming deals. Most importantly a dedicated start date is missing ("From December"), also specific details are yet to be finalised ("details of the voucher system were still being worked out"). Moved to forum to retain discussion. It may be posted as a deal when it starts or a specific details and start date are announced. Also a reminder that targeting specific users in posts is not appropriate.

Ok fine. Do I have to do everything?
    Where is the bargain?
    Thanks bought 10

  • +8

i think this is a trick- 120,000 vouchers but ONLY after you've booked. Thus they'll be say 100s of thousands booking expecting to get a $200 reimbursement but won't. Then they can't get a refund for their accommodation etc. Pretty smart of the gov.

    • +1

      Book fully refundable accommodation then

      • +1

Nope he said u must show up n spend money first

        • Knowing past government scheme there will always be loopholes for people to exploit.

    • +6

I'm surprised they don't follow what NT has done with theirs.
You sign up and get issued a unique voucher, then you book via the NT Tourism website.

The way its been described my Mr Andrew's sounds complicated.

      • +2

but that doesnt dupe thousands into spending and then too late to get a refund.. the gov knows exactly this and think we're stupid.

    • -4

good old politicians fool me once shame on me. fool me twice i'll vote for trump

100s of families will get duped whilst the gov can peddle their economic stimulus bullsht.

      • +2

Vote for Trump and you are a fool.

        • -8

Trump has done more for small business than any other president. He is done more for the world by stepping up to china than folding. At the start of COVID he wanted to shut down all borders immediately but the democrats thought it was racist

Yes he is racist, and discriminatory but he speaks his mind.

One who always lies, is easy, as you know what to expect; the one who lies on occasion is the one you need to be weary of.

            @funnysht: User name check out

          • +2

@funnysht: Frankly Trump has been wearying enough. I think you need to turn pff the Shock Jocks for a while. His whole presidency has been a disaster, even if you ignore the hundreds of thousands dead from Covid. What he is doing now is deranged.

    • He references there how the Tasmanian system works (at the end). You get the 'voucher' first, then you spend $400 totally out of pocket, then you prove you spent the money and recieve the reimbursement.

But as they say, it's still being designed.

    • +4

yep this — 6 Million people in VIC and only 120K vouchers with no clear understanding of how to claim. political 'headline vote buying'

      • +1

Won't be multiple vouchers per house/family so let's say 1.5 million families. So about 1 in 12 families can get a voucher.

  • +2

Can we go and spend on Coles in regional vic to be eligible.. asking for a friend.

    • OP highighted in bold for you.

      • Just kidding.. thx though.

    • $400 of snackaroos? Hmm 🤔

    Moar cake!

    • +1

MOAR! Is that all you got? MOAR!

      • +1

        • moar :-)

  • -1

Packed regional Victoria does not sound fun tho

    • +1

What you're describing is a festival. People love them

    • More the merrier. We have been looking to take a break for a time, but only just booked to go away today and noticed vacancy bookings are filling out quickly.

Just hope we don’t end up with another jolly lockdown, due to S.A. travellers, as have just heard wastewater samples taken today say virus in water supplies at Benalla and Portland. They suspect truck driver. Hopefully just virus shedding. Have been saying same about SW Sydney for some time.

  • +1

I just read about this, and I immediately came onto ozbargain to get the finer details. Ozb never disappoints.

  • Interesting one

  • Of course someone posts it straight away!

  • +1

    Is St Kilda regional enough?

    • +3

Perhaps you’ll have to travel East St Kilda.

  • +5

1 report… I bet it was JV haha

  • -2

What a clown🤡. And a waste of tax payers money..ie mine.

    • +1

      No it's mine.

    • -3

Basically if you are a politician in 2020 and you want to look cool all you have to do is to throw money to the plebs. You also get extra points if it’s borrowed.

      • +5

You mean like the tax cuts the liberals put through for middle to high income earners, a change which dwarfs travel incentives like this in terms of cost?

        • well why do working harder and earning more money mean they should get taxed more?

        • +2

It's their own money! They worked for it. The government is still taking their money, but a bit less.

    • +1

      agreed.

  • +3

    Where’s jv?

    • i agree with you. it should be vounchers available to use anywhere. City is prob worse off than regional because of higher costs for rent etc

      • +1

Please - anyone - take a walk in the Melbourne CBD… it is desolate

        • +1

Since the lockdown ended, there's been stacks of people around. It's not going to be anywhere near its norm though. It'll get much more busy once people start returning to the offices.

        • We will soon. Family does not like wearing masks so as soon as the mask requirement is withdrawn we will all return. I have offered to drive in and pay for parking also. Always keen to see the Myer windows and the Christmas decorations.

  • +2

OP has blocked jv from commenting on this post, just to be sure

  • +1

Going to a regional winery on 29/11 FML

    • Going to the River; Lake Hume. Never been there before; must have bypassed it many times though.

  • -1

Reckon airbnb will be eligible? I can already imagine the hoops needed to jump through to prove that you've spent 400…

    • Also where will you be able to spend the voucher?

      • Hopefully - NSW / QLD

  • +1

How do you tax payers feel about subsidising other people's holidays? I feel like this is extreme socialism. I am happy to pay tax for essentials of freeloaders, hoping their kids would have a better life, but this is not essential.

    • +8

You're not paying for peoples' holidays. You're paying to stimulate regional business.

      • +5

People get $200 from gov (i.e tax payers money) without having worked for it. How about we get some tax relief? I promise I will stimulate those businesses with my own hard earned cash.

        • +5

Tax cuts during recession don't stimulate economies, people are much more likely to just save it and not spend. Besides we just got income tax cuts anyways

          • -1

@Ononono: They do! If I get to keep more of my own money, and if I know I can continue doing that, I would feel a lot better about spending it. As simple as that. But if I feel gov is taking half of my money anyways, why would I try to work a bit harder when the economy needs it?

            • +3

@alx88: The government is not taking half your money. Not even close.

It's unlikely any additional spending resulting from tax cuts would get spent in regional Victoria.

              • -1

@prhino: If you work harder and your income goes from $120k to $130k how much of that extra $10k goes to government and how much goes to you? Isn't it 40%-60%? That's pretty close to half of the money for your extra hard work.
Generally speaking, if I have more money (which by the way I have worked hard for), I either invest it or spend it. Either way, I'll be helping the economy, and by extension the regional Victoria.

        • exactly - we will be paying for this

        • +3

          Tax rates are already low.

      • True. Just booked and paid over $1,000 for accommodation, then there is fuel, food and activities to pay for also. Regional towns will receive quite a boost for only $200 spent … that is if we qualify and receive the $200. We were going to book anyway.

    • +3

You happy for the feds to hand over $100 million to News Corp, who then pay little, to no tax?

      • Why would I be happy for feds to do that? That sounds very stupid/corrupt. If anyone is happy with that, surely they are stupid, aren't they? Just because the gov is doing something stupid, doesn't mean it's ok to do more stupid things.

      • Corporate welfare or corporate socialism or million dollar tax giveaways to Foxtel is probably ok for many right wing hacks.

    • +1

am happy to pay tax for essentials of freeloaders, hoping their kids would have a better life

the tiny amount of tax those people eat up isn't worth thinking about. Any freeloader is living a paycheck to paycheck life that cannot improve significantly. The money they spend goes directly back into businesses so its not even much of a loss (to the economy). We have far bigger issues in Oz

      • Are you happy to apply the same logic to your personal life? If you have a business, do you give out $100 to someone if they promise to come back and purchase from your business so the money "goes directly back into your business"? Of course you would not. I don't understand the logic that someone who is not contributing is somehow helping the economy by simply being a consumer. As I said, I am happy to cover the essentials, but not holidays.

  • +2

This isn't a deal if the system, details and dates haven't even been worked out yet. Should be in the discussion/forum pages.

    • agreed. it isn't a deal, more like political 'headline vote buying' via a lottery

  • Can you book now (for January) and then claim?

  • +2

So $465 million of tax payers money, $24 million of vouchers, $441 million of backdoor payments to his union mates.

    • +2

cash splash using our taxes. Shameful if you ask me.

    • Vs tens of millions of our tax payer money handed over by the liberals to Foxtel.

Or Frydenberg and Scumo charging us taxpayers to attend a Murdoch party.

      Or insert other LNP dealings.

  • +1

This is welcome news. Would love if the Gov told us if we can book now and then claim or gave us a closer date

  • +1

Would places along the Mornington Peninsula (e.g. Rye, Sorrento) be classified as regional towns, or do we have to go further abroad?

    • +1

      its metro melbourne

    • Better trying for Phillip Island. Best time to see the penguins in Summer as those ocean breezes are so jolly cold.

    • +1

Considering we had to sit through the 4 months of metro melbourne lockdown here, i would say no grumpy face

      • Well lockdown, and masks, worked at least.
Let's hope the states get tougher with the quarantines now. I just read (unconfirmed) Qld has 11 Police in quarantine now because they had to wrestle a non compliant and positive person international quarantine who tried to escape. Wish the internationals would either stop coming or at least do their quarantines without said grumpy face or worse. 🐧🖖

  • Jack or not jack?

  • +1

what a waste.. should have been restaurant and entertainment vouchers.. that would definitely get people out and about!

    • +2

I went away on Sunday. So much traffic. Everyone is going to regionals without any stimulus needed.

    • Ummm, read the article

Victorians who have booked and spent at least $400 dollars on accommodation or tickets to attractions and tours can apply for a $200 voucher for spending money.

      • +1

        what's your point?

        • @alx88

          Rowdy was talking to Andre
