I wanted to get the Xiaomi one but it's on a tricky spot and it doesn't fit a device with power plug converter well.

N300? Even the Amish run AC1200.

I'm inclined to say that its not a bargain. Its old tech, and slow. There are cheaper N300 extenders out there. For maybe $10 more there are AC1200 options, so a more recent protocol (can typically accept more devices at once), 4 times the speed etc. And remember when you're running it as an extender, you half the speed. Its only running at 100% speed in Access Point mode.

    • Thx for that comment. I got one room behind my kitchen that struggles with getting WiFi… must be the piping in the walls or something. If I stand in the doorway of the room I get full reception, but behind the wall … nothing

Will getting an extender help in my situation?

      • An extender or an access point will help. Main difference is that an extender doesn't require any cabling so its easier to install. Access point has a cable running to it from your router and then acts almost as an extra wifi router.

If its just one room and you don't need blistering speeds etc then an extender is probably sufficient. But yeah, I wouldn't personally go for anything under AC1200 these days as they're basically the same price as N300 and are substantially better.

        • Are there any wifi extenders that doesn't massacre your wifi speed?

Unfortunately, my TV isn't able to pick up my wifi router in the living room, even when my iphone picks it up fine with full strength signal.

So I have to use a wifi extender in order for my tv to pick it up. Maybe the tv is using an old wifi card or something.

But the download speeds I get on the wifi extender is atrocious. I get around 5Mbps.

Any good extenders you can recommend?

          • @dabs: In general, the higher the AC rating, the higher the speed. But then it also depends on what band. Is your TV connecting to 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz?

            • @Jinxinferno: Connecting to 2.4Ghz.

On my Iphone and Laptops, I can get 100Mbps down even on wifi.

But the extender puts out only 5Mpbs.

I might need to look in to upgrading the extender then.

              • @dabs: It's possible that you've got the extender located too far away from the router, so it's receiving poor signal in the first place. So I would experiment with moving it closer to the router and then seeing if the speed improves by connecting to it with your phone and running a speed test. If it works fine closer to the router, it might be an issue with your TVs Wifi receiver, in which case a better extender won't help you. Then you might have to look at a firmware update for your TV, or if you have an extender that has an RJ45 out port, you can run a hard wire from the extender to your TV, bypassing the TVs Wifi altogether.

                What model is your extender?

                • @Jinxinferno: I have one of the netgear ones.

                  https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/netgear-ex3110-ac750-dual…

Either this one or the AC1200 one. Can't remember which one.

I might look into a new TV altogether after I test the position of the extender.

It's not too far away from my wifi router. Around 7-8m and the walls are gyprock.

                  • @dabs: New TV or a chromecast or something similar.

That extender should be working faster than that

  • Be Mindful of TP-Link repeaters. I have one and I noticed it drastically dropped my internet speeds from 50Mbps to 3-5Mbps. a quick Google will confirm this. I am thinking of upgrading the firmware to check if it helps but for me it has been a dud. Unfortuantely it is byond the 30 day mark for me so cannot return it to Amazon.

    • This is how repeaters work by design. For faster speed purchase a mesh system or cable up some access points.
