Electric Car (EV) Home Charger - 32A - Options?

Hi,

Recently bought a 2019 Nissan Leaf. Looking to install a Level 2 single phase small/mini size level 2 32A charger suitable for Nissan leaf. Are we limited to these 2 options only in Australia or are there more affordable options that are not easy to find using Google search?

Would appreciate feedback/options from anyone.

In addition to charger: Also, looking to buy a Level 2 charging cable, any suggestions for it?

PS: I already have 32A RCD with cable connected to the Garage so will be getting an electrician but would be a 5 min task for electrician to plug the 2/3 cables into the charger

  • Do you have solar? If so and your leaf has the right type 2 charging port, get one of these

    https://www.evolutionaustralia.com.au/product-page/zappi-7kw…

The myenergi zappi can charge your car using the excess solar (or mains etc).

    • Thanks Jimmy.

Are you aware of any cheaper/affordable options available? If yes, I would love to know as the idea is to bring the upfront cost down and who knows when we move again to another house/location so while I don't want something low quality, I don't need anything top of the range or too smart that I might not take full benefit from.

I do have solar however I would hardly ever be charging during sunshine hours except possibly weekends and when solar is producing power, appliances in house will consume it so unless I am missing something crucial that this technology offers, I am not sure if it's any different to use a non-smart/solar charger for owners that monitor their solar energy often.

      • Are you aware of any cheaper/affordable options available?

Not that will suck the extra solar and divert it to the EV for charging. If you want a simple charger there have been few linked by others.

The Zappi can be used for most cars, so when you upgrade the leaf to a Model 3 for example, the same charger will work.

and who knows when we move again to another house/location

Take the charger with you. Simple line in the contract saying the EV charger doesn't come with the sale.

    • Thanks. 10% off code would be quite good. I tried looking for codes online but didn't have much luck. Will keep trying I guess

You’ll probably get better responses on a specific EV or Leaf forum.

      Trying all venues, thanks

  • I was going to purchase a used Nissan LEAF in October and posted a deal for a home charger for $371, which is still available. The swarm of comments warned me off a LEAF though, so maybe avoid the comments.

    • Seen that(your post before I posted this) already - That's where I got the alarm bells from that if the charger is not SAA approved then no electrician will install it and guessing if something happens then insurance won't cover it either.

What a great price and deal otherwise, thanks

      • Do you already have a 32A socket installed? Cheaper chargers plug in and aren’t hard wired.

        • Getting 3-pin socket installed on Tuesday but already have 32Amo wiring with its own circuit/RCD to switchboard so it isn't sharing load with anything

  • So I can get a combination of these 2 and that will be sweet and it will more flexible as the charger is portable:

    https://agmelectrical.com.au/power-points/transco-power-poin… &
    https://www.evolutionaustralia.com.au/product-page/portable-…

I already have 32amp cable going from Garage to switchboard with it's own RCD so I doubt heating would be an issue as these power points are designed to be ON for long time otherwise they simply wouldn't get approval/certification and the power point + electrician won't cost me more than $60 (Already have sparkie coming for other small jobs and if literally has to connect 3 cables to a PowerPoint, it should be under $30)

Only big investment would be the portable charger but it provides me flexibility as I can use the same charger on a 10A and 32A socket (with its dedicated circuit)
