Hello Everyone, I am an international student, studying masters in Sydney, looking for any full-time jobs during summer break starting from 1st December.

A few things I have done so far while I was in Sydney are :

  1. Worked as A tutor ( Home tutoring kids right now )
  2. Web -developer (freelancing work)
  3. Pamphlet Delivery
  4. Laptops and computer repair
  5. Worked on a farm ( helping an old couple with landscaping) and lawn mowing.

I am now currently looking for a full-time job in any domain, I am good in sales and customer service, tried applying thorough Seek, Indeed, Jora, no luck, no response. If anyone has any leads, tips or knows a place which is hiring, please let me know, your feedback and help are highly appreciated.

Maybe try farm work since you are experienced in it: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/help-harvest-nsw

You could be a Santa or do mall decorations. My sister did mall decorations while she was in uni holidays a few years ago, was a good 6 weeks' work. Would at least give you some breathing room while you look for a full time job. You won't find many proper jobs advertising at the moment - you'll probably have to wait until mid January.

We only have just over four weeks until Christmas - those seasonal positions are recruited for and filled months ago.

What does your visa allow you to do?

      • Work full-time during uni holidays but restricted to 40 hours/fortnight while uni is in session

That's going to be an issue for many positions. If they are after casual work, that may be fine. But they are after full time work as an international student, that may not be available after the holidays.

Not to mention that at this time there are so many people looking for a job, the work visas will cause many to gloss over the resume.

I'm in QLD and recently advertised for a casual retail position. Within 2 days I had over 1000 resumes Within the week I had several thousand. Needless to say I didn't get to read all those resumes for the best one, I just picked the first 10 that looked suitable out of the 50-100 I was able to read. I can only assume that Sydney with the closures they had would have many more applicants.

I assume the bearded fat guys are territorial as sharks when it comes to their Christmas Santa gigs.

There can be a high turnover of them. Years back when I was looking after a Christmas section, we had to change several in a year because of drinking (and one was a bit "handsy"). The agency would just send another.

    • I think a lot of places aren't having a Santa this year. I noticed that in a westfield over the weekend. Probably due to social distancing?

  • Fruit picking

    • applied weeks ago ,still awaiting response.

  • Hi,

When I was last in Sydney I stayed at St Andrew's College @ UNSW near Newtown.
This was because over Christmas/NYE the residential students are away and the Rooms are rented out.
    https://www.universitystays.com.au/colleges/sydney/

I'd suggest you contact them or St Andrew's and see if there are any job vacancies.

They certainly needed people who could handle bookings/physical check in on site and most days Breakfast was available and if you know Sydney well or have a Language, that might be a bonus.

    • Thank you so much

      • No worries.
I'm not sure UniStays actually handle any job vacancies, they might just be the front end for bookings. But there were certainly people on the ground @ UNSW making it all happen.

        Good luck!

Have you been in touch with your University? They all have job referral places, I'd be very surprised if yours doesn't. Without knowing where you study I can't say for certain that some in Sydney are providing assistance with accommodation, fee defferal, etc.

Food assistance can be had here: https://www.study.sydney/student-welfare/emergency-food-assi…

If you are really desperate you could hire an ebike and deliver for uber etc.

  • try gumtree jobs, they are posted 24/7

  • Web -developer (freelancing work)

    Can you do dapps?

    • Naah never tried it. if you want I can have a look at it.

      • Dapps and WEB 3.0 will change how users interact with the internet. DYOR and you may find something you like.

Apart ftom Uni Fees, all these International students we keep hearing about that are the cornerstone of our economy contribute nothing else?

    And in return take jobs.

They sound like hard-working people which is exactly what Australia needs.

      • Thank you for your kind words. Just trying to adapt to change.

You said you applied for many positions but didn't get a call back. You have to step back and ask yourself why that is. You are the only one that will truly know the answer. However, check that your applications are tailored for the problem the business is trying to solve? How will you solve their problems? Do you send same CV and cover letter to all openings? If so, consider changing your ways and tailor yourself to what the business needs and what you can offer. Remember you are basically selling yourself. You said you are good at sales so this should come easy to you. Just think of yourself as a product that is the best in the market and open their eyes why they really need to buy you now.

Question whether you are applying for right roles that suit your situation and restriction. There is no point in wasting your own time or the theirs.

Is your cover letter and CV engaging? If a stranger was to pick it up would they be engaged enough to read it to the end? If not, change this immediately. This is your first opportunity yo stand out. Google tips and tricks on how to improve it and stand out from hundreds of sheeplike applications. Don't just use buzz words (e.g. experienced, hardworking, fast learner, self-motivated) show them, lead them through your story, captivate their imagination that you and only you are the solution to their problems.

When you get the interview prepare and prepare some more so much that you will knock their socks off with confidence and humility that they will want to buy your services immediately.

    Good luck!

    • Thank you for the resume change and cold calling tip , will try this think out.

did you know some advertised jobs are getting over 1000 resumes right now ?

You would need to do an intensive job search for any positions right now. a friends husband sent 148 applications in 6 weeks, got 3 interviews and 1 job offer. He's in IT. Since it's so close to Xmas, get on the phone and keep phoning to find any vacancies. He did a lot of cold calling- in person with his resume and via phone, all before sending out applications. You might even find work cleaning as people may need this before Christmas, including cleaning balconies and patios. Just a thought. Lots of luck with it!

    • Thank you sir will try it out

      • all the very best with it jaxybe! let us know how you go.

  • Given COVID and others in the same boat looking for work, it’s going to be challenging, but good luck and don’t give up.

  • Not sure about the restrictions on ur visa, but perhaps try for Junior Business analyst roles like this :

    https://au.indeed.com/m/viewjob?jk=848f02b2f93d2557&from=ja&…

There was also freelance IT work advertised in the job websites yesterday, which I can't find right now.

Good luck with urjob hunt. Stay positive.

  • I was once a student too, and the 20-hour per week restriction really sucks as most companies look for full timers. If you come to Riverina region, there’s a lot of farm jobs here. I moved here a month ago and worked as a nurse but i have been approached by a few farm owners asking if i can or know someone that can do farm jobs.

    • Even if they're not looking for full timers, they are after casuals with flexibility, and I can relate to that.

In the past I've hired students that give you their availability, then once they are hired "oh, but I can't work these days". Even if they are not like that, the change in schedules every couple of months, the unavailability during the week, the inability of casuals to come in on short notice (covering emergencies/illnesses), makes it hard for a business. I've had fantastic casuals that were worth the extra work, and I've had ones where I would have been happier for them to leave.

Put on top of that a restriction of 20 hours a week, and the likelihood of international students returning home, many times it's not worth the effort of hiring and training.

  • Have you tried supermarkets? It's close to Christmas but many may still be hiring - particularly Coles as they've had done hiccups with their new recruiting system so many are still processing applications. Might not be full time work but depending on store there could be a decent amount - flexible once you go back to studying too.

  • The govt should ensure foreign student have enough money to cover all their living expense whilst studying in our country.

They make student like Iran do so, so why not all. This stops students procuring jobs which otherwise could be filled by actual Australians. And may assist in reducing crime.

    • The govt should ensure foreign student have enough money to cover all their living expense whilst studying in our country.

It's part of their student visa conditions. SBS says it's about 21K per year

    • The students are working in jobs that locals don't want.

Uber, Uber eat, 7/11, dominos, yam cha, etc.

When I was a 1st year student in Sydney i walked into every single cafe/restaurant/bar on Glebe Point rd, King st, Cleveland st and Crown st asking if there was any waitering job. I mean literally every single one.

I had never waited tables before (but said i had) and i got job within three days. Youve just gotta play the numbers and go into every store. I even went into brothels on Cleveland st asking if there was work there as a 'front of desk'.

You just gotta get out there. I even said to some cafes I would do a shift for free to prove I was keen.

    • Thank you man will try it out :)

  • Seems like you have got a great array of skills. Why don’t you try Airtasker?

    • Thank you will try that.
