New Laptop Needed (Budget $1300)

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new laptop for my wife this Black Friday. Looking for help in narrowing down the choices out there. She predominantly will use it for school work and her teaching job. However, she has also expressed wanting to watch Netflix, watch YouTube, etc. She would also like to play some PC games, but these shouldn't be too much of a drain on resources. They are usually slower games where not a lot happens at once. She likes a touch screen element too. Oh lightweight would be good too.

Want to spend less than $1000 but willing to go up to $1300ish.

I've been looking at an IdeaPad slim or possibly Lenovo Yoga.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. No Apple please.

  • The Lenovo Flex 5 has touch and has enough guts to run some 3d games, just make sure you get a Ryzen 7 version if you want performance.

S540 also a very portable device, in 13.3" footprint. Non-touch.

    • Was just looking at the flex actually. Why ryzen 7 over intel? Any reason?

Just researched it and it seems like amd is the better performer.

  • -4

New MacBook Air has good battery life and enough horsepower for normal activities like those you listed

  • As a teacher she should be able to get edu prices etc ask her to see what the school uses/can get her first before rushing out to get anything, if the edu price on xyz is crap sure look for a bargain

    • The school wont be buying her one. Ive already signed up to the lenovo ed store. At the moment its between an lenovo idea flex or hp pavillion x360 that jb has on sale for 900.

      • Never asked for the school to buy her one. Just the school should be able to provide a list of edu approved suppliers and whatever proof is needed for her to claim edu prices

If you don't mind demos, you can also try JB Hi Fi, they have clearances going on at the moment.

Picked up a Surface Laptop 3 (Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 13.5" i5 256GB (Black)) for ~$1300 (after voucher discounts), and a Macbook Pro 2020 model (non-M1 chip), for about the same over the weekend. Limited stock, but worth a look.

  • Acer Nitro 5 will be $1279 at JB Hi-Fi for Black Friday.

Dedicated graphic card that will run most recent games.
