  • What is the performance (web, gaming) compared to the base level Macbook Air M1?

    • +2

This runs windows, linux, and you favourite games a lot faster than the M1 can't ..

    • +1

You are comparing two different ecosystems. The M1 will excel at native macOS applications that are developed for its ARM architecture. However being a first generation product, there are still compatibility issues to be resolved with software designed for Apple's previous architecture. Please refer to the link below to use as a baseline.

      https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhead/2020/11/21/appl…

In terms of web browsing you will not be able to tell the difference, because both products are over powered for this task.

The AMD Ryzen 4500U will excel at tasks designed for Windows and support 3rd party applications.

Whilst the M1 has good graphics technology, the majority of games are developed with Windows in mind. Additionally AMD has been making graphics cards for more than a decade, and the Playstation and Xbox use their technology. This means that a lot of games are optimized with their architecture in mind. Please refer to the below YouTube video of the AMD Ryzen 4500u running 15 popular games, from GTA V to Resident Evil 3.

      • Great explanation, confusing for first time buyers haha 😊

That being said, one has to wonder how well Windows will run on the M1 chips when they get around to it.

I'd still take the Ryzen mobile chips any day though over the M1 and Intel offerings.

        • Unfortunately the M1 CPU doesn't support Bootcamp to run native Windows apps, and currently MS will not provide the ARM version of Windows (which wasn't very good anyway) to individuals. There is Crossover, which is a derivative of Wine, which I have used on Linux a while back, but it can be hit and miss with Windows support.

          • @shellshocked: That counts that out then haha. Seeing in the news about 5600/57⁰/5800u series in benchmarks and they seem to be a bit faster in performance than this year's lot. Should be ok to upgrade after next year again :)

  • 250 nits or 400 nits display?

  • Was about to buy but noticed no headphone jack??

    • The US version is here for $1021, on Amazon AU but sold by Amazon US
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08C81JT39/

Interestingly, this one comes with a headphone jack and GPU GeForce MX350

But no USB C charging. Not sure if power supply will be an issue.

      • Different model though. Not a UX425.

    8gb Soldered Ram, no upgradability.

    • Considering that's the standard these days for Ultrabooks. For office work, 8GB is plenty enough for word, excel etc.
Purchased for the wife to replace her 12 year old core2duo laptop. That has 4GB!

  • Is it worth paying an extra for Ryzen™ 7 4700U and 16GB RAM and 400nits

    • Depends on what you are after.

Office work, the above spec is quite sufficient. Word, Excel, Emails, powerpoint etc.

If you plan on doing heavier workloads photoshop etc, then yes its worth the upgrade.
Then again, you wouldnt be using a Zenbook for photoshop.

I mean the wifes current laptop - Core2Duo, 4GB, ATi 5750 1GB, 512GB SSD, is working fine, only issue is parts are hard to find and an original OEM battery is obsolete (eBay ones last not even 12 months).

This will be a huge upgrade for office work and a huge weight saver @ 1.2kg.

      • Is the 400 nits variant available in Aus?

    • Found one with Ryzen 7 4700U, 512GB SSD, and 16GB RAM and I believe it is still using 250nits at Domayne for an extra $348. So the total comes up to $1398

  • Hi, is it possible to upgrade to Windows Pro?

  • +1

Laptop arrived today. After a quick charge this is my mini review.

Build - all round great build quality. Feels all round plastic but fit and finish is well for Asus. It has a brushed aluminium look.

Display - nice bright and sharp. Colour is abit warm but other then that it's very clear display.

Sound - Really surprised by the quality and loudness from this laptop. Like omg for such a small form factor. Great soundstage, lacks the mid bass and sub bass but vocal clarity is amazing, you can definitely enjoy watching YouTube or Netflix on this device with abit of immersion.

Performance - boots up quickly 23 seconds from off to full usability. Apps open up snappy. Comparing this to my desktop (3800x, x570, 32GB, 2 X 1TB pcie gen 4.)
For office work, it's more then adequate, office suite is very responsive.

Hope that helps someone with their decision to purchase.

    • Doesn't this model only have a 250 nits display?

  • Yes it does. Quite adequate still.
My study room cops the sunset directly into the window and even with the sunset on the screen, it's still legible.
