I had to make a small claim before with these guys and no issues. it was just a lost camera+SD card and the really weird thing is that they didn't charge me any excess for lodging a claim or ask any questions regarding it… I just found the money I had asked for in my account awhile later. So for the small things they seem to pay up but with the big things (which is much more important!) I'm not sure..

      • ha wow. thats awesome.

        thanks :)

    • same situation
would be interested in hearing stories on claims
knock wood never needed to so far the last 3 times ive used them

    • I used them last year with a 10% discount. I lost my new iPod Touch 32Gb on the trip and had no problem getting the claim paid out (minus the $100 deductible), even though I didn't have a police statement or anything official to back up my claim. I was pleasantly surprised.

yeah there seems to be a permanent 10% off for these guys if you look for it. I think TIDTHANKS or THANKS would probably still work to give 10% off.

anyway I used these guys when booking my trip earlier in the year for snowboarding in NZ. The whole trip got cancelled because of the ash cloud, and I put it a claim for it. No hassles really, and I did get a phone call from the guy processing my claim just to double check a couple of things, but there were no problems claiming the money back anyway.

These guys are underwritten by Mondial so in my opinion there isn't much risk.

    • wow that;s really good then!

As of December some time they will not be underwritten by Mondial anymore, they've changed to some other mob… hope this doesnt effect their claims respone too much.

I have had a spare tyre stolen from a rental car in Mexico, and there was no problems claiming for that. They will soon be underwritten by Lloyd's. I have made a claim with Lloyd's before for a missed connecting flight due to delays, and there was also no problems at all with the claim.

  • I use TID. NB their yearly policy is almost the same price as a 3 week trip to the USA (but still much cheaper than most). And it will cover domestic trips too.

I've had to make a claim after a trip to the USA last year. The plane was delayed then cancelled due to mechanical failure. This meant I lost a prepaid booking with a hotel. I put in a claim with TID and to my surprise was told that mechanical failure is a general exclusion. Apparently this is the case with pretty much all policies. My credit card (CBA) insurance also turned me down for the same reason. I naively thought the thing most likely to go wrong whilst travelling would be covered. So its not a point against TID per se, unless someone can say that other policies would cover such an event.

Good luck to you if you suffer a panic attack, anxiety, or depression while abroad (especially in the US). "Sorry, we don't cover mental health issues, good luck!". Enjoy paying hundreds of dollars in doctors fees or even thousands if you have to go to hospital.

    • Perhaps some people may be lost on the point I'm making here. Real, decent health care should cover everything - including the mental and physical. Can you imagine if Medicare didn't cover you for mental health issues? If everyone with an eating disorder or addiction who went to hospital wasn't covered by our government, because there is nothing physically wrong with them? These companies are scum who take the easy way out where ever they can.

  • TID always has a discount code available so it's always worth looking. They also sometimes offer $10 off (which is obviously better if your policy is less than $100) but I can't find any codes right now.
