'Series 1-7 with a free set of 4K drinks coasters' is a good way to look at it

Season 7 was bearable only because of the knowledge that season 8 was supposed to be amazing.

    • +1

Those freebies have been included since the season 5 boxset.

  • Will this be actual real 4K though?

    • Yes, even the remaster on the earlier seasons is very well done. Noticeable difference compared to 1080p Bluray. Some of the episodes in Seasons 6, 7, and 8 look absolutely incredible in 4K.

      • He means were they filmed in 4K when he means real 4k. Which is a no

Season 1 to 3 were filmed in 2.8K to 4K, and seasons 4 to 8 were filmed in 6K (of course there's always a mixtures of cameras and lenses used). Game of Thrones used some of the best cameras in the business, especially for scenes where heavy CGI was required. The raw files that HBO had for these 4K releases would have been of the highest quality, used to remaster everything in 4K. Even season 1, HBO were provided with a prototype version of the Arri Alexa.

          • @ThatsCheap: Well news to me, thanks for the response. I was under the impression it wasn’t shot in 4K

          • @ThatsCheap: Stupid question but does the remaster do anything to make the battle against the night king clearer ?

@ZeeFlyingMonkey: Absolutely - HDR and DV help with darker scenes, this is essentially how these are meant to be viewed. Better brightness, clarity etc coupled with 4K is how those dark scenes are meant to be viewed. Assuming you have the correct tv, hardware etc to makes use of HDR and DV. :)

@ZeeFlyingMonkey: I watched that episode on Monday.

Definitely much much better, but my TV is midrange so there was still a bit of banding and in order to make it bright enough to see I had to turn my HDR brightness up higher than normal (no local dimming). As a result the blacks are more of a grey.

If you have a high range TV, especially an OLED, it would look much more amazing.

            • @ZeeFlyingMonkey: Thank you ! That clinches it for me 😁

    • No it’s not, the first 3 seasons were shot in 1080p and the rest were shot in 2880p (3k), so they are all professionally done upscales. They look great but obviously not native 4K

  • Wow that was a quick price drop. I'm sure I saw it listed for ~$350 on release last week.

  • 3vil, you’re a good man. Thank you.

  • Wow that's expensive, I guess that's the price you pay for getting it soon after release

  • These look great, have been watching the series for the first time via Linux ISO’s of these versions.

Not point starting a journey when you know the destination ends in a dumpster.

Cool. Now you can be disappointed in 4k.
