Need Insurance Opinion for a Car Noob

Hello,

I'm currently comparing quotes for insurance on a new car however I'm confused about preferred repairer or "any repairer". As someone who absolutely knows nothing about cars don't know any mechanic, repair shop etc. which is the better option for someone like me? If I choose my own repairer does it mean I have to be more hands-on with everything? Like get quotes and stuff instead of the insurance doing it all?

Thanks for your time!

You don't need to be more hands on if you choose your own repairer. You just take it to your repairer of choice and they deal with your insurance company for you.

    • Ah sounds simple enough!

Read the terms and conditions because 'your own repairer' is often subject to your own insurer's approval - especially if you are at-fault.

        • Does the repairer have to credited by the insurance or something else? But yeah I'll give it a read thanks!

          • @westzod: Legit business, part of the association of motor mechanics or whatever. Can't be uncle Gary working from his garage on the weekends for cash.

            • @netjock: Also can't try to charge $20k for a $1k job. The insurance companies have a rough idea of what jobs are worth, if it's extortionate they will baulk at it.

This has to be a troll post. No one honestly believes they have to fix their car themselves

I wonder if anyone has any deals on reading comprehension?

Damn, used up all my negs already today. Obviously more ‘hands on’ relates to chasing up own quotes etc.

The option to have the car repaired at the repairer of choice is better than the insurer forcing you to deal with their choice. Many reasons for this. Their guy is an el cheapo mass contractor your preferred may be a specialist in your car (if its a euro type) also your repairer may be just down the road not 6 suburbs away useful if you don't have hire car/ loan vehicle as part of the policy

I don't get this constant "As someone who absolutely knows nothing about cars " thing with ppl these days. If you drive a car you MUST know about cars. Seriously does no one now check air pressures check water etc that's just a minimal thing, is it the reliance on "dad" or Racq etc that gives ppl the I don't need to know anything approach.

While Australia has the slackest license test I've ever seen surely the gov could up the ante by forcing license applicants to at least say where to put oil water and where the wheel brace jack etc are

You said exactly what I was thinking. With so many basic tutorial videos available on nearly any topic in the world there is almost no excuse not to know the basics.

I'm betting the majority of these types know how to like a post on Facebook or spend hours scrolling through mindless cr@p on Instagram but won't make the effort to educate themselves.

    • Agree -
I'm actually shocked at some of the 'new car person' questions on this board in recent weeks.
no wonder current affair etc is still going with so many supposed dodgy mechanic stories of people being taken advantage of. What do those that dont know about OzB do??

    • Only if you are a regular or can trust dealership recommendations.

Otherwise finding a repairer is also a luck of the draw. Obviously can find a repairer that costs twice as much, they might just sub contract and sub contract again.

Problem with business people is there is cheap and dodgy or expensive and they still find the need to cut corners.
