Harvey Norman is offering good prices, everything I've believed in up to now is being challenged.

    • It looks like 2 X P990 Phone. HN 2 phones deal? LoL

  • SUPER GOOD DEAL

  • The sale is only for the weekend right?

  • oh man there's a lot of good android phone deals now…for under $300

    i'm deciding between:

    LG Optimus 2X (P990)
    Nexus S
    HTC incredible S

Anyone like to comment which I should go for?

    • +1

Nexus, if you want ice cream

      • +1

all 3 of those should eventually be released with ICE, just that the nexus may/should be first.

but of the 3, only the LG is dual core.

        • +1

"Should" and "eventually" is the key world here. LG just released Gingerbread for the 2X last month.

        • +2

Word is the CM team have a fully functional alpha of ICS compiled for the G2X (the american version of the O2X) already. Others are also working on it. Even if LG are slow, it's likely that ICS will be out early in the new year.

Nexus S has a bunch of ports at alpha. Again, its going to be ready in the new year.

Not sure about the Incredible S - but there is work on related models.

See here for an american-biased ICS sitrep on many phones.

        • +1 @ garratt

LG took more than half a year to release the GB update.

And just a warning.. the 2x battery is so fail on stock. I get 4-6 hrs with frequent data usage (mainly just FB, email and browsing).. but apparently it is NOT so bad on custom roms like CM7

Anyways still the cheapest dual core phone atm.. I'm amazed at the price drop. Got it for $445 @ HN almost 4 months.. and that was from a price matched receipt

        • sorry replied to the wrong person

      • is ice cream out for it and fully working?

        • +1
        • LG announced that they will release ICS and CM9 (ICS) will be released for the Op 2x in Jan. Plus it's dual core

        • According to this the announcement on the ICS update schedule should be next month

        • The SCHEDULE will be released in december - not the actual update

    • This is a great deal but the 2X is buggy, expect the phone to freeze about once a week. See this xda faq: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041546

Otherwise great phone with an awesome screen, and the specs are better than either of the other two.

      • Replace the firmware and its fine.

        • -3

          And void the warranty.

        • +1

It wont void the warranty :) Just flash stock back on if something goes wrong. Typical ignorance :)

        • But what if the problem is one where you can't flash back the phone?

    • nvm

  • to summarise the above, the LG is the best option if you're taking into consideration aftermarket firmware

  • nexus for $249 @ mobiciti (with $50 off discount) is better value imo.

nexus( gpu, screen, design, etc ) vs LG (dual core)

    still good deal though.

  • +1

I have been using this phone for the last 6 months. Been perfect with CM7, Offical Gingerbread is out aswell. No problems :) Now to wait for ICS!! :D

By far best value android phone IMO :)

    • I installed CM7 stable and it had so many minor annoyances like the toggles showing 3G on but it was off, and when the toggle button showed it was on, 3G would be off. I had other issues like performance problems and freezes as well. I then tried SwiftExtreme kernel and it improved although when listening to music, there was often stutter. I think I read somewhere the author underclocked the CPU to 200MHz during screen off.

I installed topogigi's 2.0 SP3 rom (based on stock GB) and it's been rock solid so far.

  • 2 questions: what 3g frequencies? 850 or 900 or both

Also, is this the chip that cannot do high profile mkv files? There is a dual core (like the atrix) that cannot cope with these files so it makes the hdmi port a little redundant for movies.

    Otherwise looks good

    • i have only used hdmi for youtube so cant comment on the MKV file but I assume if you have a player (Vplayer) should have no problem…

In regards to freqency, pretty sure its a optus (900/2100), not telstra :(

  • Beat me to it! I bought it anyway in case it was a P990H which has 850mhz (ie. NextG and Voda's new network).

  • +1

Anyone know of a local model, dual-core phone that works on NextG 850mhz, in this price range?
Seems both this LG 2x P990 and the LG 3D P920 are NOT sold locally with 850mhz. That's the killer.
I did a quick check of P990 v P920 specs and found the P920 (~$50 more on sale) offered 900mhz 3G, which is nice for Optus users, but still not 850mhz.

SGS2 at the current $548-549 limited sale prices seem to be the only option this side of the Apple 4s! So right now it seems the SGS2 is still the only really decent option on NextG - but please prove me wrong!!

Is anyone seeing LG P920H or P990H locally or are they really only via import/grey merket dealers?

    • Thought about the Galaxy Nexus? Other NextG phones could be the Sensation? But agree :( Not much to choose from..

    • +3

Uniquemobiles are listing the HTC Sensation Z710a for $379. They say its Oz stock & NextG compatible.

      http://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/Items/htc-sensation-blk?sck=…

      • Thanks! I will look into that.

The reports here on the LG P990 working on NextG is interesting, too.

      • Thanks again, zenturio.
I ended up getting this HTC Sensation from the link above, since the Sensation can get the Sensation XE ROM via usual sources on xda (stock and modded) to bump the dual cores 1.2->1.5MHz and other XE features like the Beats Audio settings. Plus there are battery options to take it from 1520 to 1800 or 1900 capacity, to improve the battery life aspect.

So thanks. FYI there are also Sensation Z710a (850/2100) models on eBay as well as this seller. Bargain price IMHO based on its ROM upgradability to Sensation XE 1.5MHZ! :)

  • Wow, that's cheap…

  • great deal, except I would prefer LG optimus 3D instead…waiting for a good deal to come out…please god please…..(drooling)

  • +1

Good bargain picked one up from Indooroopilly. They had a few left but not all of them come with the hdmi connection cable.

  • out of the HTC Incredible S, Nexus S and this phone (LG Optimus 2X).

Which would be the most responsive?

I would say the LG by my naive assumption since it's a dual core, but i could be very wrong…

    Cheers

    • +1

Look at mr_asstight's comment (4 from the top), he asked the same question and had lots of answers

  • Good deal, good price for a dual core phone.

Main concern is the various comments online regarding the random reboots and BSODs. Some people indicate it is the charger. Some feel it is the software/ROM. Other people feel it is the hardware itself (bad batch of phones).

  • +1

GOOD NEWS!!! My Optimus 2x works on NextG!!!!!!!

Did manual network select: few options came up, including Telstra Mobile (UMTS) 850Mhz and 3TELSTRA (UMTS) 2100Mhz, selected Telstra Mobile and it connected!!! So NextG ya ya ya!!!

  • +1

Now updating to Gingerbread. Hope it doesn't kill my NextG support!

    • +1

Updated to 2.3.4. Still have NextG.

  • Just bought one @ carindale(came with speakers)

    • What is your Baseband, Build and LGE Version. The reason I am asking is that mine didn't come with HDMI cable or speakers. Those bonus stuff was when the phone was 1st release. Just wondering if yours works on NextG.

My theory is that they silently updated to the P990H (850mhz) spec for Australia with subsequent releases.

      • Are you able to provide some pics or version numbers on the box/packaging?

      • MashiMaro and issh,
The LG P990 will work on the Telstra 2G network for voice.

Can you confirm that you are running the phone ALSO on 3G (HSDPA) 850MHz network for data - and somehow show this?

A few comments here are the only hope we have of a random LG P990 on this sale also working on NextG on the HSDPA 3.5G network (as opposed to Edge 2G etc).

A pic of your box and of the phone accessing the NextG 3G network would be most helpful. :)

      • Baseband Version: 1035.21_2020110405
        Build Number: FRG83G
        LEG Version: LGP990-V10b

Not sure if mine(well, my sisters, i have the arc s) works on Next G, but according to whirlpool it shouldSource

        • If you set network selection to manual, and select telstra (not 3Telstra - 2100), then use data, does it show 3G or H or E?

If you are connected to 850 Next G, it should show 3G or H.

If you are connected to 2G telstra, it should show E.

Its a bit sad for HN not to provide this vital spec on their site.

        • Interestingly mine from HK is also showing Telstra UMTS (as a grey option) but refuses to register. It certainly works on 900Mhz. It's almost worth getting a cheap Telstra SIM to see if it will work/have as a backup.

        • Update:

Still not sure if it access the NextG network. I got hold of a Telstra SIM, put it in the phone and selected "Telstra Mobile" to connect to, which it did with "H".

However the about screen says "3Telstra" as network, so I still don't know if it is/will connected to 850Mhz. Will have to wait until I'm in the wilds and outside normal Optus coverage to find out it seems.

  • What is the difference between P990 and P990H? Any spec difference?

And does the bonus HDMI cable and speakers only come with the P990?

Can someone confirm this before I purchage this? Thank you :D

    • It appears that LG did a promotion in which you would get the HDMI cable, the speaker and a cardreader with the p990 or the optimus 3D. At my local i managed to find one such pack amongst the other p990 boxes and the clerk happily gave it to me at the same price ($298), even though the promotional pack was stickered at ~$30 more.

So, if you're going to buy one, just have a look to see if there are any of the promotional packs in stock first.

    • Thanks mashimaro, are you able to upload some pics of the box for reference?

    • Thanks for the pics, MashiMaro.
From the first one, it indeed appears to be on NextG 3G (if 850Mhz is the only 3G option on Telstra).

I still don't understand how, though, if the phone is supposed to not support NextG.
The other pic's info I don't understand, so hopefully someone here can explain if there is indeed a revision that's supporting 850Mhz.

    • Not all the phones sold by HVN support Telstra NextG (850). The latest batch of LG Optimus 2X supports it, it seems. It is (will be) luck of the draw. There is not much stock left and they will not let you test the phone.

You can tell whether it will support NextG by going to Network Selection. If the Telstra Mobile network shows UMTS, rather than GSM. Then, the phone can support NextG. Otherwise, it cannot. It will support 3/Telstra co-owned 2100 3G network.. but that's very ordinary and will be turned off eventually.

My guess on why the latest batch supports it is not because LG wanting to add that feature. It is most likely due to the latest batch of the 3G chipset happens to supports tri-band, rather than dual band.

      • It already supports tri-band umts but pretty much everywhere states that this is 900/1900/2100, there is also the p990h model that does 850 instead

What I am suspecting is LG possibly merged the 2 models together for quad band umts support

        • Makes sense. Anyway, anyone wanting to buy this from HVN should assume it will not support NextG. In the event where you end up getting one that receive one that supports NextG, then it is a bonus.

Otherwise, buy it form some shops/places which sell P990H.

  • Below is the email I got from HN:

"The product LG 2X supports WCDMA 900/1900/2100 and GSM 850/900/1800/1900.

The info was from the LG 2X box."

Does that mean it support the Vodafone new 850Mhz network?

    • +1

It means.. Voice - it supports 850Mhz… but not data.

So in short, no. It does not support Vodafone's new 850Mhz 3G network.

      • thanks netsurfer!

  • Looks like it's version specific, just picked one up with the same version numbers as issh and it does not find the Telstra 3g network…
Trying a gingerbread update to see if that changes anything but I highly doubt it

The barcode of the version I got was MHR62113313(1.0)BL where I suspect the (1.0) means first revision

If mashimaro can confirm his/hers is a different version model (barcode) then we have this next g compatibility thing debunked

    • My version is: MHR62113313(1.1)BL

      • Thanks, folks it looks like v1.1 does next g and v1.0 doesn't

  • Quick poll:
Is this useful to anyone? If you bought a P990 from this HN deal, update the list below, so we can get an idea how common/rare 1.0 or 1.1 is.

Thanks to those of you who reported and then confirmed that 1.1 works on Telstra NextG 859MHz!

IF you bought the P990 add a +1 to indicate if you got a 1.0 or 1.1 version:

    +0 MHR62113313(1.0)BL
    +0 MHR62113313(1.1)BL

    • Mines MHR62113313(1.0)BL
Came with HDMI cable (which only the earlier ones had?) and speakers.

I don't have or use NextG so I can't test or need it either way.

  • apparently you can actually find the barcode on the outside of the box towards the bottom

just went o HN, would have got it if they are selling the v1.1

  • thank you so much for the deal.

I brought 2 from the online store. couldn't be bothered with driving around. only $5.95 shipping as well, so all good. :)

  • Looks like this deal is finished it's listed as $578 on their website.
