Buying Jewellery from Large Chain from Overseas

Hi all, my wife recently fell in love with a ring from a scandinavian (George Jensen) silverwares house.

We priced it out and it is $4300 here or $3400 if bought from Singapore on the online store (there is no physical store in Singapore - we would need it sent there either some sort of freight forwarding or we have friends who could receive it and then sent to us in Melbourne.

We've never done this before and wondered if anyone had experience with this, specifically how to ship it to Aus and any additional costs? We are really trying to avoid paying the Australia tax on this. Any tips are appreciated!

  • I suggest that you pay for postal insurance. Otherwise, in case of loss you will be receiving a small reimbursement. Also, delivery instructions should be to the addressee only and to be released on sighting DL or passport etc and signed delivery.

    GST will be charged in Australia.

    Alternatives are to go to Singapore and pick it up from the forwarded location, hide it/wear it on the way home to avoid detection.

    Or find a wife that likes Target costume jewellery.

    • ^This. Wait till next year when air travel goes back to normal (hopefully) and you will be able to get return flights to Singapore for around $400 or even less with AirAsia, Jetstar, etc. Singapore has their own version of TRS so you will be able make even more savings that way and wear the ring on your way back

      • you still need to pay GST if you wear the ring back. Unless you are travelling with enough people it fits under your concession.

          Yes that is the right thing to do. But the OP specifically mentioned "We are really trying to avoid paying the Australia tax on this" hence my comment. At the airport no one is going to go through the jewellery you are wearing and question their origins unless you turn up looking like Kanye

          • @websterp: Avoiding tax and tax evasion are different.

          • @websterp: Sorry, just to be clear, my mention of the 'Australia tax' refers to the higher cos of items in australia compared to overseas using its nickname - I'm not referring to or wanting to avoid Australian taxes.

  • Have you looked into import fees? It probably won't work out any cheaper once you take into account freight forwarding, any insurance, import fees, and GST that you'd have to pay on top

    JJB, dat you?

  • In the post or forwarded:
    10% GST = $340
    15% Import Duties = $510

    Go get it yourself:
    Flights = ~$400 return
    Parking = ~$30
    Petrol = ~$30
    Cost to miss work so you can fly weekday and get a cheap flight
    OR
    Opportunity cost of losing your whole weekend.

    If it was me, I would wear (haha) the extra $1000.

      Don't forget the extra 3k when you get home.
