Advice on Airline Suddenly Changing My Flight

I booked flights on Expedia for a holiday and one of the flights in the middle of the trip got moved to 1 day later. This means I need to book an extra night of hotel (generally expensive) and lose travel time and a night of hotel on my next destination. All Expedia can offer is a refund. No other airlines offer direct flights, they cost double the price + an 8 hr connection. Is it reasonable to ask for compensation more than a refund? Since it's the airline that decided not to fly on that day, I can't do anything about it.
Does anyone have experience with this issue?
Thanks!

that's what travel insurance is for

    • Can you tell us a travel insurance policy that will cover for that situation…? I've been told tough luck in similar circumstances as the airline is still flying you.

it's usually called delay in transit.
some insurance policies have them but will stipulate how delayed etc.

      • Doesn't travel insurance find you another flight no matter the cost?

    • Yep. Spend the extra $30 and get a good Travel Insurance that actually pays out if it needs to, like Southern Cross.

If you read the terms and conditions, which you accepted at the time of booking, you'll see that they reserve the right to move their flight schedules around with this much notice.

Forget compensation or anything similar - worst case, they'll just issue you a refund.

Depends on the conditions on the ticket and the regulations in the country of departure. Either way I don't think Expedia will compensate you for the actions of the airline. You will have to seek any damages from the airline once incurred.

Also I don't believe you can get any compensation if you have the fare refunded since any responsibility they have with you is ceased.

There are also limits on what can be claimed, also if you booked on the same itinerary etc.

I would start reading the conditions.

I have gotten compensation before due to changes mid trip on a return ticket. Since it's not mid trip when the change occurred, it may be a struggle to get anything more than refund.

  • That sucks but if airlines start taking into account or be held responsible for every single passenger's itinerary then they'd be out of business before you can say Shirley.

2020+Flying+Holiday :| seems and sounds weird, each to thier own I spose. Also good info above generally

  • You have no option other than 1. Accept it 2. Refund.

The only thing that will help is Travel Insurance, and I'm pretty sure that only covers you if your trip has already begun and the flight was changed on you while travelling.

  • I don't think I can recall a major holiday where something like this hasn't happened to me. Airlines change schedules all the time, and most travel insurance companies have clauses in their policies which cover major changes which significantly impact on your schedule. I learned, the hard way, to make sure all my pre-bookings were cancellable… but, of course, even then you'd occasionally see an especially-good "no cancellation" deal that was so tempting that you'd hit the button and pray (and, occasionally, lose). I once missed a whole country because of a schedule change, and, for several days, the whole holiday had to be improvised until we could get back on schedule; expenses piled up. Just check your travel insurance… mine was one of the cheap on-line ones that didn't have a great reputation, but I have to admit they couldn't have been nicer about this event, even though it took months before I was able to do all the Maths and make all the claims.

  • Contact the airline. Some airlines if they change your flights will offer stay at hotel they have a contract with.

  • If the plane isn't flying, the plane isn't flying. Either accept the change, ask for a refund on the whole thing or ask for a different date/route.

  • thanks all!
