Are There Bots Upvoting Deals?

Just a question really. Is it possible?

2 topics have recently piqued my interest as to why there are many upvotes.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/588498 - Resale of Windows keys with 34 upvotes (and increasing)

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/580465 - Average product with 173 upvotes.

what's wrong with the up votes? The word "deal" is very subjective. Each to their own. If a deal does not meet your criteria for an upvote, it does not necessarily means other people can't do the opposite.

  • No. You can verify to see which accounts voted in the votes tab.

OzBargainers seem to love air dusters among other hot items. 🤷‍♂️

  • Upvoted the duster.
    Not a bot.

    • That is just what a bot would say.

        Aww, how cute

  • I noticed a few years back there were a few people who seemed to just upvote every deal on the front page. No idea why but given upvotes aren't policed like downvotes are, there wasn't really anything to be done about it.

    • See my comment here:

we have come up with an algorithm that flags undiscriminating voting patterns and discounts those votes when calculating store performance bans. This is currently running and affects all stores so let's see how it goes for the short term and follow up with some numbers.

and the data from July showing some of the affects of these voters.

Oh that's really cool. Thanks for sharing the link.

  • Duster was a good deal. Lots of techy people here that would use canned air. This is reusable and that deal was a lot cheaper than the prime day deal too.

people want to earn the Civil Duty Badge ? I see you don't have one yet :D.

    Jokes aside.

Use data as a way to gauge the vibe of this community, from my observations on high votes appears to be:

    • Freebie (a PC game usually)
    • Fast food deal - KFC, HJ, McD
    • Not really "serious" posts, but gets everyone excited (maybe how it was written than the quality of the product), with some elements of a borderline joke that doesn't get removed by mods.
    • Legit seriously good deals
    • Seems random depending on date/time/year it was posted - e.g. you may see same items posted, but sometimes it has lots of upvote and others very little.
    • TA, Dealbot, and a few others - maybe a fan club upvoting? who knows.

I've sure I've missed other patterns, but others can chime in :)

Aren't you wondering why those past comments were deleted?

  • Probably sock puppet accounts.
