Citibank Plus Debit Card- Sending Overseas?

Hi, expert ozbargains,

I’ve been trying to find a solution without asking my bank :)

My brother lives overseas(Europe) and would love to support him consistently with small amount of money. Just wondering how possible is it if I send my debit card to him and transfer money every time he needs it.

I would need to tell the bank I’m overseas even though I’m not. Any way around this?

Just doing this due to him not having a card for me to transfer, other ways are costing me too much to transfer. Would rather this because it's very convenient.

I was planning on mailing the card to him.

  • How old is your brother?

  • are you currently with citibank? if you're a new customer, how are they to know you're not overseas?

    • When my bro starts pulling money from an atm overseas :)
Normally when I travel overseas I need to let them know that I will be using my card so they don't freeze it or think its a scam. Thought this was a norm.

      • i meant if you say you are overseas, how can they verify?

        • Yeah true that

  • You could report the card missing first. Get a new card, send him the new card. Wait till he confirms he got the new card then you activate it.

    • Mate! This is a great idea :)
Are you saying this incase he doesn't receive it?

You don’t need to notify Citibank that you are overseas. If you already have an active card follow what Travis J says. Hopefully it should work. Although, be mindful that doing what you intend to could breach a number of banking regulations in both countries. If these are tiny amounts, hopefully should be okay. Larger amounts might get flagged under tax or money laundering provisions.
My suggestion would be to use something like transferwise. It is cheap and fast.

    • I thought I needed to tell them so they don't freeze my account when used overseas.
Would it be a problem if I tell them I gave my brother to use overseas?

      • If there's any sort of subsequent fraud on your account they're not obliged to assist you because you have given your card and PIN to another person.

I've just done this exact thing with my son who was stuck in Italy with all the Covid restrictions. No need to contact Citibank.

    • Thanks Man.

My mother in law been using my card in Europe for the past 2 years without problems. Didn't have to notify the bank.

    • Thanks man.

  • Anyone send the card via post? Just a bit hesitant but my brother needs financial support especially due to COVID. Might only be for a year or so.

You can lock the card within the app while it's in transit. Technically if the bank finds out you have given a card (and especially PIN) to someone else you're breaking the contract for liability (though it's very common to lend a card so I don't know what's gone wrong).

I don't know why your brother can't open a European Bank account, but if he's an Australian resident, many banks will let him open an account from overseas (much like those coming on working visas).

  • What if you’re bro opens a TransferWise account and gets the debit card. He will get a virtual Australian account you can pay money into. Then he can just convert it instantly in the app

    • Yeah had a look at this but it had atm fees.
Thanks. But if you’d compare it might not be much of a difference due to exchange rates etc.

      • A card issued in Europe can be used to withdraw 200 Euro a month without fees. Alternatively he could convert the $AU into Euros in the app and transfer it directly into his EU bank account.

  • Any differences to the Citibank GLOBAL account?
