First one specs at HP Here
2nd one specs at HP here

Basically from what I can see is one has broader wireless connectivity

    (Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11b/g/n/ac (1x1) and Bluetooth® 4.2 Combo) than 802.11ac (1x1) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.2 combo

    and differences in External ports

    1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate; 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5Gbps signaling rate; 1 HDMI 1.4b; 1 RJ-45; 1 AC smart pin; 1 headphone/microphone combo vs 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A (Data Transfer Only); 1 USB 2.0 Type-A (Data Transfer Only); 1 AC smart pin; 1 HDMI 1.4b; 1 headphone/microphone combo; 1 RJ-45

I hope you have taken into consideration that neither have a decent screen resolution being HD (1366 x 768) and NOT 1080P

    Hope this assists

    • Thanks for the info, I appreciate this.
I'm not exactly tech savvy - this is for my dad, he is a writer and will be writing books and mainly browsing the web.
It will be an upgrade from his old Microsoft Surface…. at this point newer browsers cannot be installed on it. (it's horrible and yes this would even be an upgrade)

Im open for any other recommendation in this price range if you have time.

      Thanks again :)

    1. What is your fathers maximum budget?
    2. Is a laptop a must have, or will a desktop and monitor suffice?
    3. Does your father have good eyesight and can read small text ok?
    4. Must the device be a windows device

Get back to me and with more info can search options

    • Hi mate,
      Budget around $450 - $500
Laptop is preferred, Can read small text fine with glasses.
      Windows OS is preferred :)

      Cheers for your time.

I suggest you take your intended recipient out on a shopping trip and try out these laptops in person. They are always on display on the shelves at JB HiFI, The Good Guys / Bing Lee etc.

They have rather low resolution displays (1366 x 768) and have a much lower pixel density than the old Microsoft Surface (to my knowledge, all of the Surface series had very high quality IPS displays, even the Surface RT)

    https://www.laptopmag.com/au/articles/laptop-screen-resoluti…

Nobody should be buying a 768p laptop for $500 when a full HD alternative device exists for $550~600. Your productivity actually takes a hit from using a low resolution display. This is especially true for people who is using their device as a work tool (writers in particular).

    • Some great info here, this has helped heaps.
      Appreciate your time :)
