Unless your dog is already eating this and is doing well then I wouldn't recommend it. It's full of cheap fillers and there's a lot of allergens on that list (I've fostered many dogs, and wheat and oats are two of the most common causes of food allergies in my experience).

Costco's Nature's Domain range is around this price for a 16kg bag and is far better quality.

  • thx OP bought one

Normal cats can't eat this? I have 2 boys who eat alot and are skinny!!!! One is 2 years and one 10 years.

    • they can, kitten food is just a little higher in calories to help them grow as far as i know. Adult cats get fat on kitten diets. I guess you could portion control this.

      • All they wanna do is eat, but they're not fat.

        Maybe I'll pass

  • How long would it take two kittens to get through this?

  • How is this compared to Purina?

    • My cats loved it and wouldn't touch the supermarket dry food.

      • Thanks mate, do you have any adult cat specials?

        • Pet circle has the best prices I've found for Hills science and royal Canin food which are both well regarded. I'd start there, but if someone has found somewhere cheaper please let me know

@Ibz: I'd say more well know but wouldn't agree with regarded. As always, do your own research but they are both filled with cheap fillers and marketed as premium but fall quite short of the mark.

            • @vash5: Honestly I can't say I know everything about everything, but both vets I went to recommended it so that's enough for me to feel it's safe for my cats. Whether or not it's the best 🤷‍♂️ as long as my cats are healthy I'm happy. Open to recommendations with some sort of evidence though

    • Pretty close but way more over priced.

  • I just ordered 15kg of puppy for $76.00 with free delivery. It's the same deal (no better or worse). It still seems expensive at this price, but what do I know? Geez, it's made in the US - shipping from US is prohibitive; I imagine that is why it is so expensive.

Did some research - purina bonnie is for puppies, australian made, better ingredients (including vitamins, minerals etc), higher protein content, normal price $49 for 20kg from animal tuckerbox.

      Some things you should know

      1. Australia made means nothing, the industry is not regulated.
      2. Ingredients in Purina have lots of cheap fillers that make up the bulk of the food. Some that can't even be properly digested by dogs
      3. The vitamins make up less than 1% of total ingredients. Anything below the salt is under 1% in content.
      4. Protein content is important but it's only half the story. What type of protein is it? If it's not crude protein or above its rubbish and just by products that is animal waste.

I would highly suggest you do some more research to find all this and more out. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have, I might not know them all but I'll try to help you if I can.

I have since cancelled the hill's order. I am willing to believe that hill's could be better than purina; I just doubt it. There are just vague promises (no data) made on the hill's site re their dog food. Having worked in a food processing facility for humans, I imagine that hills is no better than purina. I imagine that they both use off cuts and waste from other food manufacturers. For example, I know that we supplied salmon that was smoked twice and frozen multiple times accidentally to a factory that tinned salmon for a boutique cat food company. I would only have used it for fertilizer; it was mush with no nutritional value left. If you know better or different, perhaps you could explain how? The purina site says just the same stuff as the hills site, but the figures are better for the purina food. In business, talk is cheap. Certifications are cheap - some trouble but once you have them, easy to keep (in the human food industry). BS statements can make lots of money in profit for no outlay and hardly ever any consequences.

      • Here's a US study where purina is a better product and better value than Hill's - and this is despite the cost of transport from Australia to the US of purina!
        https://www.pawdiet.com/compare/hills-science-diet-vs-purina…

      • Some of my friends are volunteers at a local dogs home (dhot.com.au) where they only use purina - probably because of cost and simplicity. They say that there is often a marked difference in the general health of their dogs when they have been in the home for a while. They generally believe this is due to the food. This surprised me - I would have thought raw meat and raw vegetables would be best. Anyway, big marketing and kickback for vets etc with hill's clearly doesn't mean it's a better product.
