  • I thought the coupon code was expired?

I tried it last time and it said it was =(

haha just brought one but left out the code.

  • Not a particularly good deal at all:

    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=asus+EEE+PC…

(probably $99 by Xmas or not long after)

Don't know why my previous comment and neg vote was deleted, hope it doesn't happen again.

    • Your last comment was posted to a duplicated post and that one got unpublished.

Also the list from staticICE — half the entries are not valid. The cheapest would be MSY or GameDude, and both of them are $299 for the Linux version, not the Windows XP version.

      • Thanks for the heads up!

        "…that one got unpublished."
Far more interesting than plain ol' 'deleted'!.
You weren't a public servant in a previous life, were you Scotty?

        • The fact is the duplicated post + 4 comments are still in the database so it is not correct to say that they have been deleted. Published/unpublished is more of terminology from the content management system, to indicate that a piece of content has been created, is existed in the database, but not published for the world to see.

Feel free to suggest better terms. Meanwhile I'll continue to "unpublish" duplicated deals.

          • @scotty: Just good natured banter Scotty…!

    • I doubt the price will keep dropping much further.

I'm guessing that there are no more 701's being imported, and these are just clearing not-old-but-superceded stock.

There's a lot more margin making $500-$600 laptops than $300 laptops.

  • I didn't realise that a bunch of fake out of stock listings on shopping comparison sites substantiated a negative vote for what is an AWESOME deal.

ROFL I pretty much spat my coffee out when I saw that post

    • Sometimes a generic search, Asus + eee + PC + 4g, is simply a generic search.

People are not stupid, they can soon see what's valid and what's not, like prices starting at $299 for the Linux version while COTD offers the XP version at $299 + a (very reasonable) maximum of $13 for Oz wide delivery.

And while some Asus EEE buyers might consider the $299 XP version better value than the $299 Linux version, overall it's not really the impulse buyer's, uber-bargain for which COTD would like to become known.

$250 would have been a good 'impulse' buying price for now - August 2008 - and at that price I might have bought one myself !

  • WELL,

I bought an ASUS EEE from one of the earlier offers (maybe I posted it?) for more money and with the Linux derivative on board.

Good fun for a small price - I'm still finding my way around with Terminal mode and all the joys of installing software.

This offer with XP loaded is very attractive (OK, I've bought one). I'll probably want to swap over the RAM for a bigger stick - then I'll let the kids at it… or my wife… Nah! Maybe I'll keep it to myself.

As several commentators have noted, the buyers of these toys have generally NOT been looking to replace a larger/more powerful notebook. I certainly avoided notebooks myself - but there is plenty that I can do with an EEE that I'd not want to do on either a notebook or another category of handheld device.

    • Good points!

      • Perhaps.

I'm a bit surprised at the negatives. It may not be a spine-tinglingly GREAT deal - but it's pretty good for a fun, useful bit of technology.

Sometimes I wonder whether people need to try a small software rollback. Perhaps a system restore point of last 'meaningful life' would be a start? Especially now that we've got a M$oft XP-loaded toy!!

        • "It may not be a spine-tinglingly GREAT deal" - Amen.

I check out Ozbargain daily for impulse-buying bargains. And have bought quite a few things on that basis.

If I have to buy something, or plan to buy something, I'll check out staticice or getprice or any of the other price comparison sites and buy at the best price available then, relative to collection or delivery.

However, my point is that COTD's offer, while maybe a better deal for someone planning, or just about to buy an EEE anyway, is not a bargain per se for impulse buyers.

          Simply that.

        • Sometimes I wonder whether people need to try a small software rollback…

If you got Eee PC with Xandros Linux, the system files are installed on an union file system so it is trivial to restore your entire system to factory default. On the other hand if you are using Windows… There's always the reinstall method :)
