Play all your games - Experience the latest PC titles and games included with Game Pass fuelled by the power of Windows in the ROG Xbox Ally.

    that's a fuccing lie

it does not play xbox native games

oddly enough while phil spenser says 'everything is an xbox' their own product is not an xbox

    • +1

yeah everything I own is on steam so I will stick with my steamdeck OLED.

      • This thing runs Windows - if you want to play exclusively Steam titles on it, you can.

        • windows = sh!t battery life.

    • I get the feeling the next generation (or one after that) of xbox will be more PC based. Either by making their consoles like a pc or merging their pc and console game pass catalogues as one. Consoles in this gen are starting to go discless and they have the play anywhere feature for certain games. What you guys reckon?

      • +1

This is how things are now, and I don't like it.

They can stop listing games or remove them from your account anytime. It's happening to me on Android. I have games I paid for that are either not showing up in Google Play or saying they're not compatible on my device. On my newer and more capable devices.

For backwards compatibility with actual discs, Xbox is a winner. Fortunately, or unfortunately.

        • I have games I paid for that are either not showing up in Google Play or saying they're not compatible on my device. On my newer and more capable devices.

The Play Store is a total shit-show for backward compatibility - I've owned headphones and a wireless speaker that both became unusable because their control apps stopped working on newer versions of Android.

        • +1

When apps disappear google has just deleted the link from the storefront. The unlisted games are still on the store servers. You can access them via the app management section in the Play Store app.

I can't really help you with the compatibility issue.
While I've had no success with the bigger & established devs, sometimes I've had success asking smaller or solo devs to add my current phone to the compatibility list.

More often than not, though, the app went unlisted because it's no longer supported, the devs aren't around anymore, etc…

      Experience the latest PC titles

They don't say it plays Xbox console versions of games?

  • +12

Where's the bargain, sorry? This is RRP. Same price on the JB hi-fi & Asus website as well.

    • -1

Says it comes with a bonus 3 months game pass

      • I think they all might

  • +7

Note: this is the RRP for the base ROG Xbox Ally and will be available at other retailers (ie. TGG, JB, HN, EB, etc).

The ROG Xbox Ally X RRP is A$1599 and only available from ASUS or JB Hi-Fi.

    • Cheers! I was more interested in what the pricing on that model was going to be for us.

      Yikes :/

      • +2

Still better RRP than the MSI handhelds!

    • Any idea why EB Games isn’t selling the X version?

  • +7

    OzRRP at it again.

  • +12

    RRP is not a bargain.

  • This base model is probably steam deck level performance right?

    • +9

The Base Model (ROG Xbox Ally)
AMD Ryzen Z2 A Extreme, Quad-core 3.8ghz, RDNA 2.0 GPU clocked at 1.8ghz Max with 8 GPU cores. 16GB of Shared Memory.

The upgraded Model (Xbox ROG Ally X)
AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Octa-Cores 5.0ghz, RDNA 3.5 GPU clocked at 2.9ghz Max with 16 GPU cores. 24 GB of Shared Memory

Yes the base model is basically Steam Deck level hardware since it's an older generation Van Gogh architecture from 2022

    • +5

Makes this price harder to swallow with the base Steamdeck 20% off atm.

      • +6

One of the selling points for me is the native ability of it having GoG/Epic/Ubi/EA/Battle.net apps directly from the dashboard, instead of having to screw around with Playnite or whatever on the SteamDeck.

(Plus you know, obviously the Gamepass library)

Would increase my potential on-the-go gaming library by thousands 🤔

        • This. But personally, the price of the Ally X is the same as a gaming laptop which probably performs better. Still portable, but not as portable as a gaming handheld obviously.

Maybe once my laptop dies I'll see where things are with gaming handhelds. I hope it's not a fad. Dockable gaming consoles should be the way of the future.

        • There are tricks on how to install the xbox full screen experience in youtube. Check it out…

        • This is true of any Windows handheld though, and you can get the same performance as the base model of this from a sub 500 old MSI claw…

I'm not sure what makes this worth 999.

The X model actually looks a better value proposition IMHO.

  • +1

if you want a good deal, i would recommend shopping around for an ROG ally x on marketplace. I got mine a few months back for $700.

Raw performance it should be better than the ROG xbox ally - Ofcourse we're going to expect some variances here due to OS & software setup.
It however will NOT bet better than the ROG xbox ally x - HOWEVER, the performance will still be close….and with the price difference it might be worthwhile you going for the ROG.

If you want even better performance per dollar have a look at the ROG ally, steam decks, etc.

Not trying to poo poo on the xbox ally (x), i hope it's a success, just if you are going for a bargain don't preorder this.

  • +10

RRP, no discount and inferior value to its main competitor the Steamdeck. There is no deal here.

Can we please stop this nonsense of posting every single new device as a "bargain" just because it simply exists.

  • The bargain part was missing from this post.

  • Recommend people look at a Steam Deck at this price range. The LCD is only $520 at the moment but I'd recommend shelling out the extra for the OLED model at $899.

    • +1

I highly recommend dishing out for the OLED also, the screen is well with the cost (plus extra storage)

    • +1

Msi claw is way better value than steam deck, specially after all the updates it's pretty much near z1 e performance. Refurbs have been on sale for $399 and new ones for $550

Playing at 30fps is not fun

      • +1

This right here. Plus you also get game pass which is the only appeal of the base version of the Xbox handheld over the steam deck.

  • -2

For a brand new release, that seems reasonable.

  • Looks like it comes with the free 3-month game pass as part of the deal

  • -1

Isn't this the one that runs like shit due to having Win11 on it?

  • -7

Wouldn't a decent phone and backbone do the same thing?

    • Ummm, no

      Ryzen Z2

      • -2

Oh you edited out the 16gb and SSD from your comment. The thing is none of those matter as its the microsoft hardware doing the heavy lifting, all you need is a good network and Id argue a samsung flagship phone likely has better network hardware.

        • +4

The thing is none of those matter as its the microsoft hardware doing the heavy lifting

You do understand this isn't designed for cloud gaming right? The games run on the device itself. So yes, all of the that matters.

          • -5

@PainToad: With gamepass you can stream games you own, or weren't you aware. The only argument for playing on the device itself would be if you have no network, but then half the games now need an online connection.

        • Are you assuming you'd only use this for cloud streaming? This plays PC games natively from any store.

          • -5

@AXiS: My point is a phone and controller can do most of what this can, no doubt not far in the future steam will allow streaming of owned games.

            • +1

@Spendmore: Mate, just admit you made a mistake. This is a full blown Windows PC in handheld form. There is in no way comparable to a phone.

With gamepass you can stream games you own, or weren't you aware.

Yeah, I know. But I don't think you know that this does way more than stream a few MS games.

The only argument for playing on the device itself would be if you have no network

Yeah, I'm done talking to you.

              • -7

@PainToad: The only mistake would be blowing 1k on this when a phone can do nearly as much.
A proper PC gamer is not just going to rely on this for gaming so its a niche item with limited case use that a phone streaming games from Microsoft will cover 90% of the time.

                • +3

@Spendmore: You don't get to determine what "proper PC gamers" are and what they do.

                  • -5

@PainToad: I determined you weren't done talking to me and I was right.

                    • +1

@Spendmore: Sometimes it's hard to ignore bullshit.

                      • -6

@PainToad: I disagree, ive ignored many of your comments over the years.

                • +2

@Spendmore: I see your point and it is valid..granted your in your local network. I use Sunshine to play on a tab s8 ultra - 1440p at 120hz on an OLED with about 7ms decode latency. No handheld is gonna perform better than that in the next 5 years.

You need to understand people's use case however. I WFH 5 days a week, portability for me means I helldive while chucking a sh*t.

These are for people who take it outside their local networks, on trains, planes, buses places where cloud streaming is absolute shit. As soon as you're outside you local network, you can kiss that sub 10ms latency goodbye.

Proper pc gamer won't be gaming on this 100%. I guarantee you people who are short on time and just want to squeeze some gaming hours on their commute home are.

  • +2

Better off with a steam deck.
The base model steam deck is currently $520 which destroys this in value. Even the OLED model is cheaper and both and will perform similarly to this, perhaps better due to steamOS efficiency.

The ROG Xbox Ally X will have much better performance… but also cost a lot more.

Personally, I love my steam deck and won't buy anything until steam deck 2 and whatever competes with at the time.

    • Valve gets it. Price is a big factor when it comes to gaming consoles. That's how Nintendo have positioned themselves for years. Performance takes a hit, but the price point makes up for it. That and their exclusives.

      • +5

        C'mon Nintendo… Really?

Their recent stunt with switch 2 game pricing are the reason every other games are gonna be $100+

Their exclusives means the same game re-released over 3 generations of consoles, just so they can keep selling it at rrp.

Valve can get the SD cheap because they own steam. Just like other console mfgs with a platform to release games on, the consoles are sold at a loss and money is made from the games they sell.

If the xbox store had as much sales and users as steam, then handhelds made by M$ would have good pricing too.

FYI the msi claw is about the same price as the deck and outperforms it massively.

        • Their recent stunt with switch 2 game pricing are the reason every other games are gonna be $100+

          I agree. I hate it.

Their exclusives means the same game re-released over 3 generations of consoles, just so they can keep selling it at rrp.

Yes. And people keep buying them. Nintendo know this so they keep doing it. It prints money. And I'm part of the problem. I'm going to get the Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 re-release because my Wii doesn't work anymore, and I want to take it around with me when I travel.

Valve can get the SD cheap because they own steam. Just like other console mfgs with a platform to release games on, the consoles are sold at a loss and money is made from the games they sell.

Nintendo don't sell their consoles at a loss. If they make profit, it's extremely tiny. I remember reading that somewhere, but I can't find an article that says it. But I swear it's real. Like my girlfriend who lives in Canada.

But seriously, if they do make losses, it's less than what other consoles makers do.

If the xbox store had as much sales and users as steam, then handhelds made by M$ would have good pricing too.

          Exactly. I wish they did.

FYI the msi claw is about the same price as the deck and outperforms it massively.

When the time comes for me to get a handheld gaming PC I'll see what's available then.

I'm not a fanboy of any particular system. I have consoles from all console makers but I tend to play more games on the PS than any other. The ones I have from the current gen are all second hand. The bottom line is, whatever platform and games I get, the price has to be right.

  • +1

Feels more like a forum post/public announcement than a deal :0 RRP being posted as a deal?

  • Is this RRP?

If so, you might be better placed buying direct from Microsoft with 8-10% discounted gift cards.

Last time I bought my Series S, I used combination of discounted gift cards plus rewards pass gift cards to bring the price down. As it were, there was issue with the unit and Microsoft asked for the console back only to review, and replaced with entirely new system package. Ended up with a bonus controller.

  • $150 Pre-order promotion credit showing on my account? Anyone else got it ?

    • I.

      Still not worth it.

A used ROG Ally/X is the way to go.

  • They're now offering a $150 Amazon credit when purchasing.
