    Correct - get quest 2

    Get the Quest 2.
Possibly slightly more latency but freedom to also play wirelessly or completely untethered.
Rift = Bad investment, I just sold mine. Facebook is abandoning the Rift platform entirely next year. (Well first the hardware and then who knows how long the rift drivers will work).

Tethered headsets seam to be gearing towards the valve index or HP reverb G2.
I’m holding out to see if the Decagear lives up

    • Wireless PCVR is really great but you do need decent networking. I use Google mesh wifi and for me, the inability to strictly use 5ghz causes stutters when using Virtual Desktop, so I’m gonna have to look into a different solution now. Native apps are amazing though, especially bigscreen. Strapping a battery bank to the back of the headset helps lighten the frontal load on your face as well as giving pretty much endless wireless VR play.

      • Honestly I can’t go long enough before getting dizzy to worry about a new battery.

As for the networking, I’ve got two UAP nano HD AC and it’s just fine… they’re probably better engineered than the Google stuff, you know if you’re thinking about switching.. go ubiquiti.

    • Bad investment,

Every headset is a bad investment.

knows how long the rift drivers will work

It uses the same SDK as Quest to interface with the PC. It doesn't require OS updates.

      • Agreed, but just because the SDK is the same doesn’t mean oculus/Facebook will continue to support or update the pc support and drivers to use the rift HMD.

And yes all headsets are a bad investment but the manufacturer of this rift (Facebook) has been very clear it’s NOT their road forward… so that makes me leery of it.

Remember it’s the same company that for no real reason made you link your Facebook and oculus accounts - and are subject to anti trust.
I take the good with the bad.

  • I remember barely being able to buy this for $650 and it being OOS for ages. Second hand prices were upwards of $800. Wow…

    The quest 2 get.

  • Has higher resolution than Quest 2, lower refresh rate at 80hz, still requires a FB account. Agree with others, get the Quest 2 if you really want a VR headset.

    • rift s … requires fb acct ?

      • As of October, yes. Any headsets in operation before that won't need it until 2023 afaik.

        • +3

          that suckaberg

    • My bad, quest 2 has higher resolution overall

      • Rift S still looks better. The reason I think is because the video signal to riftS is direct high bandwidth, just like a signal to a monitor, but Quest2 is encoded compressed video. With a reading test, Rift-S always wins, and also wins as far as the more comforable.

For these reasons, I don't think you'd ever upgrade from rift-S because it's not an upgrade as far as comfort and video quality, it's more a side-grade for people that demand wireless. If you do not have a rift-S then I think both rift-S at this price and Quest2 are valid options, but at the same price I'd go Quest2

  • Rift s is basically unsupported tech now.

    • +1

      basically unsupported

      It's supported. LOL.
