Mobile Phone Shipping in Satchel - JB Hi-Fi

Recently ordered an iPhone 12 Pro Max from JB Hi-Fi. When it arrived I was surprised that the phone was delivered in a lightly padded satchel. This is a near $2000 phone shipped with barely any protection of the phone. Compare this to the $60 case I ordered from Optus that came in a cardboard box with thick bubble air bags to protect it.

Generally I wouldn’t have a concern if the device came in a box properly protected (like for example most monitors are), but the Apple iPhone 12 boxes just have the phone sitting at the top of the box.

The box is undamaged which I'm fine with, just thought it was odd that for the price paid for the phone it didn't come with extra protection in a box.

Is this normal for how mobile phone are shipped? Has anyone else ordered an iPhone (or other phone) from JB Hi-Fi recently and if so did yours also arrive in a satchel?

  • JB is trying to beat Amazon.

    • Oh wow, defs no where near as bad as that! That's a shocker. Based on people's reactions though shipping an iPhone/phone in a padded satchel is the norm.

  • ummm if its fine, I wouldn't be concerned. I ordered same phone from hn, was also shipped in padded satchel. box and phone was perfectly fine. I don't mind

btw does your pro max have the green flickering display issue?

    • The box was fine, haven't actually opened the phone as it is a Christmas present (so can't test the display)

My moto G9 power also came in satchel. All ok

    • Cheers for the reply! Seems like its common for phones to be sent in satchels! I guess I'm just super pedantic with posting items. If this is the norm and the general accepted practice then I'm cool with that.

      • Sorry I meant G9 play

  • How did it arrive?

Was it hand delivered to you? Was it left at the front door?

Hand delivered to me. Just found it odd the phone wasn't in an extra box for protection.

    • I guess maybe Toll separates the small satchels if they're valuable? The satchel is a bit scratched up, but the iPhone box looks near perfect condition. Seems its normal practice to ship phones in satchels so I'm cool with that! Just wasn't sure beforehand that's why I asked in here :)

Isn't it normal as it is already in the original box ?

    • Yeah it would appear so based on a few of the replies in here. I guess I'm just super pedantic when posting. If this is normal and accepted practice then I'm cool with that. They would know more about shipping items then I do :)

At least the satchel was padded. I received an iPad from Kogan in an unpadded satchel and the iPad box arrived so badly damage it looked as though it had been run over. Miraculously, the iPad inside was unscathed, but when I complained about the box being trashed (which potentially impacts the resale value), I was “compensated” with a $10 Kogan voucher with a $30 minimum spend condition 🙄

I’ve had nothing but great packaging from Amazon Australia, but there seems to be a competition amongst the packers from Amazon US to see who can do the shittiest job of packaging items destined for Australia.

I received a large frypan from Amazon US that had a single 15cm piece of packing tape running perpendicular to gap between the two halves of the lid of the 60cm-long box. Naturally, the tape failed in transit and the frypan arrived looking like it had been towed on a string behind the truck that brought it from the dispatch warehouse to my house.

That’s not the only issue I’ve had with Amazon US either - I’ve also had plastic measuring cups and BluRay boxes shipped internationally in unpadded satchels, which also arrived cracked.

Returning and waiting for replacements is a huge hassle - it frustrates me that they don’t just spend an extra minute doing the job properly the first time.
