eBay Always Find Ways to Further Disappoint

So I've been selling some of my video game collection over the past few months and have been making use of the promos they have every month for $1 or $0 final value fees. I've run into a few timewasters and had to re list items that had these promos. eBay, of course, has no way to re-apply these promos so you have to go into chat and ask them to wave another item's fees to make up for the lost promo deal. I've let a couple slide because I'm lazy but at least 3 or 4 times I've gone into chat and they've fixed it no problem.

Never had any issues with this up until today. I had to cancel one of my items (the only time it's ever been my fault) and asked if it was possible to apply it to the next sold item. They were happy to do this but I'd reached my 'courtesy' credit. I figured this was because it was my own doing but no, this "courtesy" extends to all the times when it's been completely out of my control as well.

"so if I list an item with a promo, and the bidder does not pay, I will lose the promo in the future?
just to confirm"

"Yes, since that is how the promo works as per our Marketing Team advise."

Their advice for me was to tighten my buyer requirements. Funny when I've sold to a couple 0 feedbacks with no issues but a couple with 100+ were happy to tell me 2 days later they had no intention of paying.

I know eBays always been awful (especially for sellers) but man, feeling a bit miffed. Especially that I've probably racked up at least 1g+ in final value fees with their outrageous 11% cut, even with all the promos I've used. Not like I'm getting a free ride or anything. I'm sure it's in the fine print somewhere but whatever. I've just sold another an item that the buyer backed out of so I guess I lose that promo =/ Let this be a warning to those of us who use these promos, I guess I'll have to rethink how I plan to sell the next batch of games.

End rant, yes i know first world problems etc etc ;)

    Yep

  • amazon my friend. join the dark side.

isn't the end value fee really high on ebay anyway?

    amazon normally just take 9%

but guess you can't sell one off items on amazon.

  • Our store fees are $0.30c plus 10.7% for domestic sales, and 11.7% for international sales.
The % charge is based on the gross value of the transaction, viz. sale price plus postage. In the case of sales to USA eBay even charge their commission on the sales tax (same as GST) the buyer has to pay.
Our main gripe with selling on eBay is the platform is totally biased in favour of the buyer. They no longer offer telephone support, only a chat line. The (Philippine) staff are only trained in how to press answer buttons a, b, c etc. They rely on the fact that eventually you give will give up.

  • I'm assuming you mostly sell via auctions.

This is why I just sell via Buy it Now and Require immediate payment with Buy It Now.

    • Yeah I've decided to put high ticket items as buy it nows in the future.

Feedbacks isn't the only restriction to tighten buyer requirements.

    • That and I think there's an option to block anyone who's had a non payment strike (or two) against their account. Anything else?

  • Yupz get mire accounts or join one of there plans i think $26 or $29ish per month brings the sellers fees down too 6% still plus paypal fees i think at 2.9%, yupz they certainly take a big chunks outs of sales even Amazif its 9% but of course there are no other options out there
