Top Password Managers 2020

Hey everyone,

Given the popularity of this post and the fact that I'd been considering making use of a more robust password manager, I'm interested in everyone's opinion on Password Managers.

The first question is do you NEED a password manager beyond the browser/os built in manager (eg chrome pw manager is what I've used forever, works cross devices and in android apps etc)

Second is if you use some additional pw manager, which do you recommend?

Given the popularity of this post

You linked a post about donating to charities? Did you mean this post?

    • Did indeed, fixed cheers

How do I vote for post-it notes stuck to the monitor?

or hitting 'forgot password?' every time…that should be an option

  • Bitwarden is excellent and well worth spending 10USD/year. 1Password is actually my first choice but too expensive in the long run.

    • Was just looking at Bitwarden..better that Keepass then?

No experience with KeePass, can't comment. Bitwarden has a free version, can always see how you like it

    • I have an older 1Password v4 (?) license, and that was only a one off purchase and no continued subscription. Works well for me.

The first question is do you NEED a password manager beyond the browser/os built in manager (eg chrome pw manager is what I've used forever, works cross devices and in android apps etc)

With browser managers, passwords are usually encrypted with the login password/passcode. If you're able to unlock the device, you can use the same to view the password/s (should only really be an issue with work device/s). They also generally offer little to no second factor authentication.

Your syncing can also be a security issue (although this is probably more fear-mongering) - if someone is able to sign in to your account, they could sync your passwords and decrypt them using their own password, since as above the on-device encryption uses the credentials for that device. But then if they can sign-in to your account, this is a pretty moot point as your "Forgotton Password" emails will likely go to the same account.

Second is if you use some additional pw manager, which do you recommend?

Two parts to this answer: 1. I don't use it as an additional password manager. I disable the built-in one. 2. I use KeePass: an free, open source, password manager.

    • Hmm nice advice thanks! Keepass isn't something I'd heard of before, I'll look into it

    KeePassXC. Free.

    • I'll have to look more into keePass, any insight on how it compares to bitwarden which is also open source and can be used free?

      • Haven't used Bitwarden, but I have been considering switching to it due to features like sharing, as well as their Android app being "official" - the KeePass app I use on my phone is "unofficial". But the same concerns with an "unofficial" app really apply to the "official" desktop software anyway, and to Bitwarden, or any (free or paid!) password software: do you trust the people writing the code.

I've only used Lastpass and it's fine. syncs my passwords across devices for free and that's all I care about.

  • Has anyone used Keeper password manager ?

  • Any risk/benefit to Bitwarden being open-source?

Lastpass vs Bitwarden is like Apple vs Android

  • So I'm getting to the point of hating Lastpass for asking me about billing info when my card doesn't expire for 4 months (it's been doing it for ages now).

Is Bitwarden really the only top alternative people are using?

    • Since I made this post, I've been using Bitwarden, and it's pretty good on iOS. It's not as good on android tbh, the autofill is a bit more hit and miss (since android doesn't have the same sort of 'password manager' plugin based functionality that iOS does).

It's definitely the most competent FREE platform available, and I might wind up paying at some point just to contribute to the devs :)
