Telstra Refusing to Refund Excess Account Balance Paid via PayPal

I have a month-on-month Telstra post paid account. Recently I had made bit of excess payment via PayPal to my account. I asked Telstra to refund the same back to me. Telstra is refusing and saying that their System does not allow refund back to PayPal. They are asking me to talk to PayPal and asking them to refund it back. I suppose they want me to open a dispute with PayPal? Is this normal? Should I involve TIO or am I missing something here?

PS: I am asking Telstra to refund back to same mode as I made payment. I am not requesting cheque or bank transfer.

I think Telstra only refund through cheque. And it'll take a few weeks. That was about 15 years ago for me though, could be different now.

    • Thanks, Telstra chat has refused all refund types - back to PayPay, Cheque, and bank transfer. They want me to contact PayPal myself to arrange refund.

  • Could you request that Telstra credit the amount to your account?
    If not, ombudsman

By the time you (or get someone else) sort this out, it will roll over to the next month anyway.

  • A bit = how much

Not more than $100. Just leave it and use it?

    • Thanks, decided to do the same.

Let it roll in to your next bill. More effort than it's worth unless it's a large sum.

  • just take it as a cheque or bank transfer.

  • Thanks all for the comments, for now I have decided to keep it in my account so that it gets adjusted in my next bill. Seems not really worth the hassle for 80 odd dollars.

  • You can also request a cheque - takes about 10 days when I did that.

Telstra are the worst when it comes to refunds. My husband got a $50 odd credit a few years ago after he left Telstra, called and changed addresses, asked them to fully close the account and refund. Nothing happened. Called again and they said they are "letting us use the email" so they couldn't close the account, again said close it. 3rd time the email was still open and the idiots sent the cheque to his previous address. Threatened to report to the ombudsman and they ended up direct debiting us the next day. Took 1.5 months to sort out that crap.

    • Telstra customer service has gone down hill over last couple of years. It is almost impossible to talk to a human when trying to connect with Telstra support.

  • Just open a dispute on Paypal.

  • TIO.

I'm going through the same ordeal now - online chat rep claims if you've paid with PayPal they can't process a refund and the onus is on you to contact your financial institution. How ridiculous, their customer service is pathetic. As this account has been closed the credit sitting in there is useless. Even when you've gotten Telstra out of your life their incompetence lingers on.

I was able to sort my issue through TIO.
