Recommend Me a Good Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Budget $150)

I owe someone a huge thanks. I know he likes his single malt scotch whisky… and I more of a cognac guy, meaning I have no idea about this.

Can I get some recommendations of a good whisky? Up to the $150 mark?

  • Scotch varies so much, what I love you may hate. Maybe if you could list some of the whiskeys he already likes and I can recommend something similar?

For example my go to daily drink is the Glenmorangie 10YO Malt Scotch Whisky. Its usually around $60-70 a bottle. If your budget is $150 id be thrilled with 2 bottles :)

It's a lil bit more expensive but howabout Ardberg Corryvreckan?

Needs a bit of dilution imo because it's intensss

I quite liked Oban 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700mL - I think it is a special drop.
Dan has it on special for members for $99 now

If he's not into peat then Balvenie or Macallan

You have to get more info about what he likes. Friendly chat or check his liquor cabinet ;-)
For peated whisky, I like Laphroaig or Lagavulin.

    • Lagavulin 16yo is peaty but smooth. Great stuff.
Can sometime get it on sale around $90, best I can find ATM is $105 at Woolworths.

    • See, cognac is easier. VSOP or XO. Sorted. Can’t go wrong with Remi Martin, courvoissier…

If you're not sure what he likes beyond "single malt" maybe a bottle of Limeburners? Something Australia, something with a great flavour, goes down very smoothly.

It's superbly smashable which makes it a decent gift, even if it's not the best thing you can buy for $150 you know it won't sit on the shelf untouched forever.

Glenfarclas 21YO is hands down the best I've ever had and it's rare that someone won't like the sherry profile.
It's almost always on discount for $150 at Nick's (https://www.nicks.com.au/glenfarclas-21-year-old-single-malt…) and I can see it for the same at Dan's atm (https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_903769/glenfarclas-…).

  • If it doesn't have to be Scotch, you can give Starward a go. They're brewed in Melbourne and have a few single malts to choose from

    • Have you tried? Dolce looks good but worried I’ll be let down and regret not getting something I’m familiar with

      • Yes, I've been to the distillery in Melbourne. I like both Solera and Nova. No idea about Dolce.

No matter how much you agonize over the choice, it's hard to predict what they will like. Why not discreetly find out what their preferred drink is?

      • There's also Sullivans Cove https://sullivanscove.com/range/whisky/

        • Good luck getting a bottle of Sullivan’s cove 😢

      • Sweet Australian whisky? Sounds like a let down to me.

  • Have you made the decision? What's the verdict?
